An article linked in the box over to the right indicates that Jordan Johnson is cleared to play and ready to go. He has been looking good in 7 on 7 drills and is seen as a leader by teamates. He is practicing with a knee brace and still doing rehab exercises as preventative measures, but should be a factor.

Bronco was quoted as saying BYU has never designed its defense around having a corner cover 1 on 1. Never. He sees JJ as a player that will give him the option to do that. A rare luxury. He indicated that JJ has athletic abilities that none of the others have.

In a couple of places the article talks about JJ starting every game as a sophomore and about sitting out last year. But JJ was quoted saying this is his last year. No mention of his junior year. I will look that up.

He is from Massachusetts and is excited to play UCONN less than an hour from where he grew up.

Sounds like a BYU CB with NFL potential.

The edges of this defense will be exceptional, barring injuries. If the middle is stout (pun intended) on the line, LBs and safeties, this D could be very good. And with At least one safety picking up a receiving threat, BK and AF are going to be a nightmare for opposing QBs and offenses. Can't wait to see how this D shapes up.

2013 D started at an 7.5 and finished at a 6.

What will 2014 rate at? I think it will be very strong. May a 7, conservatively and possibly an 8 or 8.5. As the OP and article basically states, how often do we hear a Bronco D able to count on 1 on 1 coverage with CBs?

Does Jordan not get an extra year of eligibility since he missed last year to that injury?

Only if he appeals to the NCAA, because he already used a redshirt year.

No go most likely as he could have played his first year. We got a lot of key seniors this year.

No. Johnson is not eligible for a medical redshirt for the 2013 season, no matter what.

Medical redshirts are not available if you used your regular redshirt year to facilitate a transfer. Johnson used his redshirt when he transferred to BYU, so he can't even apply for a medical redshirt for the injury.

It's a flukey result of the interplay between the four-to-play-five rule and the medical redshirt rules. The medical redshirt is essentially given to athletes who have lost two seasons to circumstances out of their control. The NCAA views a transfer year redshirt as something you chose to do completely on your own (i.e. something within your control), where a regular redshirt year without a transfer is viewed as something out of the athlete's control (they assume it's all the coaches' decision), so if you have a subsequent season-ending injury that takes away a later season, that can be your second lost season only if your previous redshirt was not to facilitate a transfer.

If JJ is injured again and loses this season, then he can apply for a medical redshirt for that year (cuz he'll then be up to 2 years lost out of his control), but he cannot get an extra year for last year as that was his first season lost due to circumstances out of his control.

Make sense?

Thanks for the clarification on the transfer aspects.

JJ did not transfer except he came here from High School.

Then all BYU has to do is show that his redshirt his freshman year was either 100% the coaches' decision, or that it was for a medical reason. I thought he was the Louisville transfer for some reason.

BYU is at a disadvantage in getting medical redshirts, not because the NCAA hates BYU more than other schools (as many fans think), but rather because BYU is not as willing to play games, lie, and tell half-truths to get the medical redshirt. BYU could point to a shoulder sprain or high ankle sprain JJ had his senior year in high school, or sign an affidavit that the coaches decided to redshirt JJ without consulting him for his opinion, and that would help immensely and likely lead to a medical redshirt. If BYU is unwilling to fudge the truth, it makes it harder for JJ and BYU to sway the committee that this was in fact out of his control.

I think that's right.....my "cross-race effect" is shining through. Been in Utah FAR too long apparently.
