Ranking the 2014 Schedule

It's decision time now. IMO, each of the reamining teams will be pretty decent to quite good next year. I think I'm going with Utah St this week. It's a home game. Taysom has beaten them twice now. We own them like we're owned by the Utes.



Here's how the schedule looks so far:

Houston will struggle mightily in the altitude. Utah St lives in it. Had to go Houston here.

We will likely beat USU and Houston in Provo. We beat Houston @Houston last year with makeshift defensive backs and them at full strength. Houston could pull the upset. We beat USU last year, too, after Keaton was knocked out of the game. They will have this game circled. They have already been thinking about this one. If Keaton is not back - sure - I would switch my vote. USU only has to travel 2 hours. Houston will spend more time than that just sitting in buses and waiting for planes. No jet lag or altitude issues for USU. Houston crosses a time zone or two.



BYU should win every game listed so far plus Houston and USU. It will be considered an upset if they do not. Then we hope they win at least 1 of the remaining 3. BAM. 10 or more wins.

Houston for sure.

USU gets Keaton back.

Houston was fired up for that game last year, and playing at their place was big for them. Their QB will be better, but USU's will be better still. Keaton is the real deal. Put the Aggies and the Red Cougars head-to-head and I'd take the Aggies. USU's a better team, and they have more motivation than Houston.

Yes, we've owned USU, but if there's a time that would change, it's this year. The USU game will be much closer than the Houston game, though I think we'll take both.

Keaton has stunk vs BYU. He's 0-3. Remember he was losing when he got hurt and hadn't played well up to that point. And he's been out played by Hill as well in the two head-to-head games. He doesn't scare me. At all.



His stat lines:

2013: 4 of 10 for 26 yards 1 TD 1 INT 74.84 PER. 3 rushes for 17 yards. BYU winning 10-7 when he left.

2012: 22 of 38 for 202 yards 0 TD 0 INT 102.55 PER. 10 rushes for 23 yards. BYU won 6-3

2011: 13 of 25 for 122 yards 2 TD 0 INT 119.39 PER. 6 rushes for 22 yards. BYU won 27-24.

We have owned USU? Lately? Really? 10-7. Hardly insurmountable considering USU had possession when he got hurt.



How quickly we forget.



2010. USU beat us without Keaton. Soundly. Hill got fired.

2011. USU was beating us in Provo and would have beaten us for the 2nd year in a row had Riley Nelson not saved the program that day.

2012. BYU eked out a 3 point victory and Hill gets knocked out for the season.

2013. 10-7 when Keaton went down.



For the past 4 years - it has been pretty close every year until Keaton went down. I do not expect Keaton to shred the BYU defense. But, he seems to keep them within reach. A fumble or an interception and oops.

USU game for sure. Keaton's a good player and I do worry about our D since there are a lot of unknowns. But being a home game gives me all the confidence I need to make this pick for the 2nd straight week.

We play Houston 5 days after taking on UT in Austin. Houston plays Bo Diddley Tech. Houston could be our 2nd most challenging game this year. That QB that picked apart our DB's last year? He was a freshman.

Yes, we've owned them. It was 10-7, but he got hurt, we went up 17-7 and their offense wasn't doing much with him in the game.

We beat them with no offense in 2012. We beat them in 2011 with Riley Nelson. Even with the QB debacle, they couldn't beat us.

Yes, John O'Korn is back (is that really how his last name is spelled??), and he was pretty impressive as a Frosh. But overall Keaton > O'Korn. Only exception is if we start to get into Keaton's head. Besides, we played Houston at their house in a dog (cougar) fight with a struggling second/third-string secondary. I expect a large upgrade in our DBs. That and while we've beaten USU the last several years, it's been by a pretty narrow margin--close enough that they're thinking they've been knocking on the door and now it's time to break through. Aggies, and Keaton in particular, have this one circled.

Ultimately, all of these remaining games are dangerous; these two are a close toss-up in dangerousedness. But we still beat both of them.
