Poppinga as a Local Recruiter

The Deseret News had an article today about recruiting and how some notable local recruits have not received offers because they did not come to camp and go through the BYU recruiting process which apparently requires camp attendance and in-person evaluation.



In the comments - where detractors always show up - a couple of centers bagged on Poppinga's style and lack of rapport with local recruits after stating that he replaced Doman as the coordinator of local recruiting.



I have no idea if Poppinga was assigned that role or if BYU is really losing local recruits that would want to play for BYU - what have any of you heard or experienced re this topic?



Of note, Martzen was quoted as saying a couple of interesting things:



BYU will often offer a recruit with less athletic talent if they fit the schemes at BYU because BYU is very scheme oriented.



BYU is farther along this year than they were last year at this time as described the 2015 class of 18-22 recruits will be better than the 2014 class.

I have no idea what is a better policy. But not offering anyone who doesn't come to a BYU camp seems really restrictive.

Maybe this fits into their plan to recruit the best payers that fit in with the BYU Schemes and BYU philosophy and who will stick all 4 years. It's a big risk getting a guy in the program, investing in him and then having him leave after a year or two. I bet they've evaluated the guys that stick and those that don't and have found a more solid footing with those who've experienced BYU through the camps.

I think this is exactly why they approach it this way. I think the approach is fine.



I was just wondering if anybody other than Ute Trolls has heard complaints from recruits or their families about the style or personality of Popping a as a recruiter.

This, and it's a screening mechanism. Bronco's big on getting people to come who want to be there. If you don't want to come to a camp, why would you want to come to school? If you don't have enough interest to see the place in person, why should BYU have enough interest to keep a scholarship on hold for you?

Schollies are precious inventory; you can't have them all tied up in maybes. BYU wants kids to reciprocate that interest, come to the school, and know that the kid is going to commit if offered.

That said, I'm glad that BYU doesn't use "exploding offers". Those suck.

How much does camp cost these days and do recruits have to pay? It just seems absurd to limit recruits to only 5 trips during the school year. One more piece of evidence the schools and NCAA don't care about "student" athletes.
