Football attendance - How does BYU stack up to the P5?

So I got the attendance figures from 2013 to just see how BYU stacks up compared to P5 (and Notre Dame) schools and G5 schools to see where BYU fits best from that angle. Here is what I found:



BYU had the highest average home attendance of any G5 school at 61,225 (63,470 is considered a sell out).



The next highest average home attendance among G5 schools was East Carolina (AAC) at 43,985--17,240 less than BYU.



The highest average home attendance from the MWC was Fresno State at 36,917--24,308 less than BYU.



2 P5 conferences averaged higher home attendance than BYU: SEC (75,658) and BIG 10 (66,745)



BYU had higher average attendance numbers than 58.5% of the P5 schools and 80% of the Big 12 schools (only Texas and Oklahoma were higher).



Every school in the Big 12 had higher attendance averages than every MWC school (Kansas had the lowest average at 37,884).



I think from an attendance POV, it is clear that BYU would be an extreme outlier in the MWC, at the top of the pile with plenty of room to spare in the AAC, and really belongs in the P5. I hope it happens some day.

We all knew that. But here is where BYU Fans need to step it up. LES used to sell out. It was a very hard ticket to get. So here we are - chump change away from selling it out. Local businesses need to buy up empty seats every week and give them to youth groups and / or customers.



Hold Tom Holmoe to his promise. Stadium expansion. Dwarf anything U could possibly fill. Go Nebraska and fill that. If Nebraska can fill a huge stadium, BYU should be able to fill one. TV goes nuts over showing games in huge stadiums filled with fans. Where else in SLC / Provo area could you feel about taking your kids to a football game.



Meanwhile - P5 makes excuses and we get ignored. If we want P5 to play us straight up - create the Big Stage.

I like the idea. The problem is that the games are on TV so that fans can stay home instead.

From a revenue perspective, BYU's tickets are dirt cheap compared to the P5 upper half. It would be nice to get to the point that BYU could increase ticket prices to drive additional revenue. Only solution to this is win.

Yes, but they have televisions in Nebraska, too.



The real issue is stone sober fans. The whole culture of tailgating with an oversupply of food and beverage is a huge part of the 8 hour ritual on Saturday at most places. Sunday, too, in NFL cities.



We need to rise up, somehow.

Keep in mind we still average high attendance even when we play lower level opponents. If we consistently played better schools, the attendance would be even higher. USC, Notre Dame, etc., will sell out. Idaho State, Middle Tennessee, Southern Somewhere County State Junior College A&M...Not so much.

I think the case might be stronger comparing to P5 conferences by looking at the median attendance. Averages are suceptible to outliers. The Big House is really really big, but other schools stadiums in the B1G are much more in line with BYU's. My guess is that we'd be above the median attendance for the BIG 10...maybe for the SEC. And where data comes in discrete chunks like this (stadiums have fixed capacity) and there can be outliers in the tails of the distribution, medians make more sense (this is also why neighborhoods' home prices are reported as "median housing values" rather than "average housing values").
