Nevada and BYU mutually agreed to remove a 2019 trip by the Wolf Pack to Provo, Utah from the schedule

Typical Nevada. We should never, ever schedule them again.

IMO, this is the biggest news from the day. Yes, BYU scheduled a home-and-home series with a good, powerful (politically speaking) UCLA team. At the same time, Nevada cancels its series with UCLA for a body-bag game against Texas A&M and a home-and-home with Buffalo.



BYU = better game for UCLA and Nevada = mid-major accepting a pay day and a mid-major opponent that will provide a more competitive game.

Or you could say BYU paid UCLA's exit fee from an agreement with Nevada to get the h-h with UCLA.



How much does BYU make playing an FCS team vs Nevada (TV + stadium revenue)? That's how much BYU paid to get a h-h with UCLA. It might have been cheaper just to pay UCLA's fee straight up.

Nevada got rid of two away games and one home game. BYU netted one away game with the announcements. It's great to have UCLA for a h-h but unless UNR paid for ditching the game @ Provo and the announcements are totally separate deals BYU lost out (unless you think BYU playing an FCS team is equivalent to playing UNR which I'll admit is debatable).

Nevada got rid of two away games and one home game. BYU netted one away game with the announcements. Mr understanding is this: BYU released Nevada from one game and only one game. UCLA released Nevada from 2 games. Nevada scheduled 3 games to replace those 3 games they dropped. They will rollover once for an SEC team and play a h-h series with the FCS team.



Now the good part: By letting Nevada off the hook for the Provo game, BYU freed up a spot to play UCLA in Pasadena. Yes. We did swap a home game with Nevada in 2015 for a road game to UCLA in 2015 - but go I think that home game back because we got a h--h with UCLA with the Provo game coming the next year.



Both UCLA and BYU had to release Nevada from their 2 UCLA games and 1 BYU game to free BYU and UCLA up to play each other twice.



BYU is not playing the FCS team. Nevada is playing the h-h with the FCS team.



That is what I read.

Now this does create a timing issue. BYU will either play 7 road games in 2015, or they will need to move some other things around. We get to play UCLA straight up. P5. H-H. Yes, we sacrificed 1 Nevada game in Provo. Yes, we might need to bring in a cupcake to replace that game - unless we do not. BYU should never turn down a chance to play UCLA straight up and build upon that relationship. They are one of our few friends in PAC country.



I would guess that Tom Holme wanted the UCLA series and Nevada wanted the money game with SEC at Kyle Field.



UCLA traded two Nevada games for 2 BYU games. Win. Win. Win. Everybody won on this deal.

BYU needs to buy an extra home game as a result of losing the Nevada game.

BYU essentially traded a 2019 home game with Nevada for a 2015-6 home-home matchup with UCLA. That is a great trade. Who cares if BYU needs to buy an extra home game in 2019? UCLA moves the needle now. Nevada does not.



And, BYU now has current or future home-home matchups with half of the PAC 12. Washington St., California, Utah, Stanford, Arizona St., and UCLA. The Utah series will likely extend beyond 2018, meaning 2-3 PAC 12 opponents every season through 2025, and one in November in most years.



And, the Arizona H-H-N is a pretty good deal. Although tipped in UA's favor, BYU gets a home-home plus a game in an NFL stadium in a BYU alumni hotbed where BYU keeps some of the gate revenue. The USC 2-for-1 gives BYU two Thanksgiving weekend games against the Trojans in California.



Funny thing is, a year ago, most Cougar fans complained that the PAC 12 was black-balling BYU.

Yes they do in 2015. But they got a much needed and much better home game vs UCLA in 2016 and a great P 5 road game in 2015 for doing so.



This UCLA series did not appear out of thin air. It was not done to help Nevada out. BYU should covet any P 5 h-h it can get and especially vs a program like UCLA.



BYU does not even necessarily need to buy the 2015 Home Game. Give Idaho a h-h series if you do not want to buy a 1 and done. And who really knows whether Nevada had to pay us something. Further, will we really have to pay a replacement team any more than we would have had to pay Nevada if we kept that game.



My guess is that BYU wanted a series with UCLA and Nevada wanted out of a series with UCLA to get the T A&M payday, and UCLA accomodated.



BYU had two choices



Nevada in Provo 2015



or



Ucla in Pasadena in 2015 and again in Provo in 2016.



That was the trade. Easy choice.

Just to set the record straight, the Buffalo Bulls is a FBS school in the MAC--not a FCS school.

Ok. When someone above posted about us playing an FCS team, I assumed they weye referring to the h-h between Buffalo and Nevada and did not bother to look up who Buffalo is. My Bad. I was surprised to hear there even is a football program called Buffalo. You learn something every day. My point was: BYU is not playing them.



Going back to the comment made by JV QB, he may have been just referring to his assumption that BYU will not proceed with 7 road games in 2015 and will bump someone out and bring in Idaho State or someone like that again. I also pointed out, that this assumption may or may not turn out to be valid. BYU may or may not do that. Or they may play 7 on the road. Or they may give a h-h to someone. Now that we know Buffalo is a fellow mid major, maybe BYU will give them an h-h.



It will all work out. For 2015, even that has nothing to do with canceling Nevada in 2019. It has everything to do with adding UCLA in 2015.



Put Simply: if this was all about helping Nevada get out of their 2019 visit to Provo and BYU just wanted to accommodate them, BYU would have just agreed to cancel the 2019 game - end of story. No UCLA. Nothing. Nada. Just cancel Nevada.



BYU wanted the UCLA series.
