CougarbibA few days ago, CBS analyzed UVA in great detail. Yesterday, they delved into CAL. Much less depth, though. No details about position by position comings and goings. They mostly talked about their coach - this will be his 2nd year at CAL. Main debate was whether he has only this year to right the ship or two more years.
They indicated that Fans judge a coach based on 1 year. Coaching peers usually judge based on 3 years. ADs split the difference and usually judge it based on 2 years.
CAL was described as the worst FBS team of all 123 last year. They were not even close to winning a FBS game. Did not compete. Because of how deep a hole they are coming out of, the author thinks progress in playing teams closer may give the coach a 3rd year even if he only wins a couple of games. Most comments posted indicated that any less than 5 wins should bring out the axe.
The schedule is daunting again. 5 wins is not going to happen. They play Colorado at home as a crossover. Plus USC and UCLA iirc. No Utes. Then all of the North teams. Oregon, OSU, Washington, WSU, Stanford. Throw in BYU. In these 9 games, CAL has a prayer of winning 2 at most. Not sure who their other 3 OOC opponents are, but they would need to sweep those 3 and beat Colorado and Washington State to get to 5. Not likely.
CBS EYE on College Football on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, publishes Breaking Down the Buzz. They pick teams where there is a lot of buzz. Some good ones like Oregon. Some bad ones like UVA and CAL. They do not seem to expect much from UVA or CAL.
