•Aresco reiterated that he sees the American's relationship with BYU as a "quasi-alliance." The Cougars do not have any physical presence at the league meetings: "Nothing formal, but we call it kind of a quasi-alliance. It's a strong relationship where a number of our schools are playing BYU over the next four or five years. We have three games with them this year, three more next year. Going forward we're trying to schedule more with them. I have a strong relationship with [BYU athletic director] Tom Holmoe."

The AAC is in transition. Teams leaving. New teams coming in. Once you adjust for that, the above statement is no longer true.

AAC has some good teams at the top. Not sure about the rest of the conference. Probably better than MWC.

Louisville has been great. Has been. 2014 finds them move out of the AAC and into the ACC.

Rutgers has had some good and bad times. 2014 finds them moved out of the AAC to the Big 10 where it will be all bad times.

Houston had a decent showing last season vs a very weak schedule but struggled vs better teams.

SMU flirts with being decent on occasion under June Jones.

But, yes, unless The ACC, Big 10, or Big 12 pluck off UCF, Cincinnati, or other leftovers, AAC will still be decent - much like The MWC with BSU, SDSU, USU, SJSU, AFA, Fresno State, Nevada, UNLV, and CSU will be on occasion.

vacuums were created when BYU, U, and TCU left the MWC. Same story as teams left the former Big East. Some programs will rise up and fill the voids in both conferences just as the formerly moribund Aggies are doing in the MWC.

Not really. When compared to the P5 the top teams are weak. Louisville has been good but lost their coach and QB. Louisville is joining the ACC in 2 months. Who else? Cincinnati? They are good and have been solid, but they are not a very good team year in and year out.

Other than that you will have one off years like UCF, I would not expect their success to continue at the same level. UConn desperately wants out of the AAC.

Picking between the AAC and MWC is like trying to pick out the girl to date that is the least ugly.

I was not clear in my meaning. The AAC doesn't have Thompson as commisioner. ANd that in and of itself makes them better.

It is really too bad the MWC did not stick together and add BSU. Had this happened and the Hair did not mess up things it would have been a legitimately very good conference and been there to fill in for the Big East.

Had BYU, BSU, TCU and Utah (who whether we want to admit it or not been a bowl team had they had a MWC schedule) stayed that would have been a legit conference. I don't fault TCU and Utah leaving (the $$$ and added opts are tough to pass up), but the Hair really is the guy who caused BYU to leave.

My fear is things will continue to get worse from a SOS and perception standpoint that BYU will digress in national views. I don't see a way out in terms of getting to a fair playing field. Things could be worse, you could be Utah and plan on getting pummeled every year by USC, Stanford, Oregon etc etc. for a paycheck and try to rationalize that for being home every holiday.

I still think in the summer of 2010, the MWC made the mistake of waiting for the BigXII dust to settle before taking action. Had they been proactive, they would be in a much better position today and the BigXII might be no more.

Imagine if, instead of sitting idly by, the MWC had approached Colorado, Iowa St, Kansas and Kansas State and said, "Look we're adding Boise St to our conference. Texas and Oklahoma are going to the PAC and taking Baylor and Oklahoma St with them. Nebraska is bolting for the Big Ten. Missouri and Texas A&M are out the door to the SEC. Your conference is dying.

"Come join us. We'll be a very strong football conference if you join us. We'll be a very strong basketball conference if you join us. Why do you want stay with that sinking ship?

"With you, we can step right in and fill the void your dead conference is leaving."

Imagine a football conference with Boise St, BYU, Kansas St, TCU and Utah. That's a confernece with five perennial Top 25 teams and several other solid programs too (Air Force, Colorado St, etc.).

Imagine a basketball conference with BYU, Iowa St, Kansas, Kansas St, San Diego St, UNLV and Utah. That's a conference with multiple Top 25 teams and several other respectable programs (Colorado, New Mexico, etc.)

Instead, the MWC waited for the dust to settle so they could maybe pick up scraps. But there weren't any. The BigXII didn't die and instead the MWC lost it's three best athletic programs in BYU, TCU and Utah.

Too bad we had the Hair instead of you as the commissioner.

At the moment of re-alignment Thompson should have been replaced with someone more legit to take them to the next level; name headline name with ties to the power conferences that had the ability to broker a deal. Start over with a clean slate and make it attractive to other potential entrance to the conference, even re-name it.

LOL. This is tic right?

Colorado agreed to join the Pac in June 2010. It was the first move of this whole conference realignment era.

TCU agreed to join the Big East before all the dust had settled.

The other Big 12 schools would have told the MWC the same thing they actually did tell the Big East. "We'll wait and see what happens, if this breaks apart, we'll call you."

Referring to the timing above, it is roughly right.

June 2010 - reports about 6 teams leaving the Big 12 for the PAC 10 - UT, Texas Tech, OK, OK State, Baylor, CO

June 10 - CO accepts

June 15 - Big 12 reaches agreement with other 5 of the 6 schools mentioned about, excludes CO who was to join the PAC 12

June 17 - Utah is added to the PAC 12 as a back up.

The time to get this done was when the lower tier Big 12 schools thought they may not have a home. UT was very close to becoming independent and had this happened OK others may have bolted.

The Hair's response to sit on his hands was horrid......if he tried not sure anyone took him serious. BYU's independence was being tee'ed up years in advance of this in the event they need to leave.

Logic Fail. TCU and Utah got offers no MWC program could refuse - as you indicated. Nobody could have prevented that.

If you really think BYU would be better off in a MWC without TCU and Utah - BAM - The MWC is still there. And Hair got BSU and then retained BSU instead of losing BSU to BEAST. He saved SDSU. It is all still there. He went a step further. He killed the WAC. He added Fresno State, Nevada, and resurgent USU. That is all sitting right there.

Bottom line is that BYU is slightly better off as an Independent. Hair and The MWC remain the next best alternative available to BYU unless things change in a P5 conference. Unfortunately for BYU, the P5 conferences got rid of The BEAST and kissed and made up after realignment and put poison pills in place that seem to preclude further pilfering of each other.

BYU is better off as an independent. Point is IF the MWC could have gotten in the mix prior to Utah and TCU bolting it could have been different. Having a quality Commissioner could have helped broker a better deal and potentially get the lower tier guys interested if UT and others joined the PAC 12.

I know it was an EXTREME long shot but we need to prepare for every scenario and the Hair did not help. BYU is in a really, really bad spot from a conference stand point. Personally I scratching to find a better resolution.

The MWC TV deal really prevented any of that from happening. I don't see any way the rest of the Big 12 would have left until the Big 12 was officially dead. Then they would have wanted to add the top MWC schools rather than go to the MWC with their arrangements.

Formation of a brand new conference would have been an option. But, even then, as long as their was hope of keeping Texas and Opie coattails, KU, K State, Iowa State, and Baylor were going to keep hanging on.

The MWC is not BYU's next best alternative. No way! Because most BYU fans and alumni live in the western US, we tend to inflate the MWC's (and the West Coast's) value. Back east, no one cares about the MWC. It's barely a step above the MAC, and that's only because of Boise State.

There is a tremendous East Coast bias on the national stage. A lot of that has to do with the fact that there are a lot more people on the East Coast and the time zones don't help at all (a 7pm start in the Pacific time zone = 10pm in New York!). The PAC 12 suffers from East Coast bias....now compare that to the MWC. Exponential.

BYU is MUCH better to align with the American over the MWC. It has teams in heavily populated East Coast markets and in Texas. BYU is much better off aligning with Central Florida, UConn, and Cincinnati, than Boise St., Fresno St., and Colorado St. MUCH better off.

I think BYU's next best alternative is a ND-esque alignment with the American. We're already scheduling 3 or 4 games with the American as it is, and the Miami Beach Party shows the American's current willing disposition.

Another long-shot option, better than the MWC, would be a similar affiliation with the Big 12. It would just be a whole lot easier to get an alignment agreement actually signed with the American than with the Big 12.

Another available and better alternative than re-joining the MWC is joining the American. I'm not a huge proponent of such a move, but it would be better than re-joining the MWC. It might make it more palatable if BYU were to join with a couple or handful of the best of the MWC (to basically destroy the MWC and seal the annual Group of Five bid for the American). My vote would be for Air Force, UNLV, San Diego St., Boise St., Fresno St., and New Mexico and parity-based scheduling. It would make for pod scheduling, which would give BYU good regional partners and opportunities to play Central Florida, Cincinatti, and Houston in conference. And, it would make for a fantastic basketball conference!

Another potential alternative to re-joining the MWC is to have an affiliation with the MWC. I hope BYU heavily considers that option before it ever considers actually re-joining the MWC as a full member.

A careful examination of national publication articles back when The Big East crumbled and eventually became the AAC as it continues to crumble will show that the consensus was that The MWC emerged as the best of the rest.

A Big 12 alliance or membership or PAC 12 would be better than MWC. You seem to have forgotten - they are not interested.

Taking the best of The MWC to join the AAC is pure fantasy. BSU and SDSU had both joined The Beast. Hair saved them as BEAST crumbled and they ran back to MWC. TCU joined BEAST before it crumbled but jumped to The Big 12 without ever playing a game.

Most experts expect AAC teams like Cincinnati and UCF to be vulnerable with Big 12 more likely to expand East than West.

The MWC is the best conference actually available for partnering or membership. So far, Independence is better.

Two Reasons to affiliate with the AAC (Big 12 driven) -

Number One:

If the Big 12 ever comes calling on the Cougars, it will most likely be as part of a two-team expansion. Who else is on the short list?

Cincinnati

Central Florida

South Florida

UConn

[And may be Memphis, UNLV, Air Force, SDSU, and Boise St. (?)]

Isn't it wise for BYU to foster relationships and rivalries with other potential Big 12 members? If BYU and Cincinnati have some good games in 2015 and 2016, it builds value in the BYU-Cincinnati games. It shows that each is willing and capable to make that trip and play at a high level. It helps the Big 12 pull that trigger. This is additional motivation to continue the series with Central Florida on future schedules.

Number 2:

With AAC-affiliation, BYU would play some road games in Dallas (SMU), Houston, and Oklahoma (Tulsa)....all road trips in current Big 12 territory.

Isn't it wise for BYU to play road games, get on televisions sets, and in the news in current Big 12 territory? This can create more local awareness, interest, and even potential fans right where we want to be. (I've mentioned before how AAC helps BYU get the East Coast media bias as well, but that's a different discussion).

To me, it is a no brainer for BYU to look at the AAC affiliation. The benefits related to the Big 12 potential outweigh anything the MWC could throw at us. And, we can still keep our MWC opponents (4-5 per year) without getting in the way of the AAC affiliation. ie, Utah St., Boise St., UNLV, Hawaii, Fresno St., etc. (and we can still play in October and November).
