Make an agreement with Big12 for games and bowl participation?

Make an agreement with MWC for games and bowl participation including P6?

Schedule more ACC games against lower level teams like Syracuse, BC, Wake Forest and kick their butts. Then tv can talk about how unfair they are.

Other move?

I'm not sure TH is in a position to make much of a move at all. I would say the move is to be as proactive as possible with all entities, lean on ESPN, and find some friends in high places.

Play as many home-and-homes as possible with as many P5 teams as possible.

TH has to look long term. The chances of a P5 invite in the next few years is nearly nil. ND didn't become a powerhouse in 10 years or even 20. Their rivals were mostly the dregs of the conferences (Mich St, Stanford, Purdue, BC, and Pitt). Only USC and Michigan have a long term history of success.

TH has to look for the same thing for BYU. The rotating schedules for PAC, AAC and even MWC schools is doing BYU no favors. We need long term scheduling partners just like ND has. They should be the teams most likely to get into a P5 conference and they should be 10 year contracts. I think the short term contracts BYU is making work against building the brand BYU needs as an independent.

The teams I'd go for from the PAC are Utah, Cal (seems like Holmoe has the best connections there) and one of the AZ schools and one of the schools in the NW (UW would be ideal but Oregon or OSU or even WSU or Colorado). Play three of them right out of the gate just like ND used to do with Mich, MSU and Purdue and play one of them in late November.

Next BYU should target one school in the ACC for a long term deal. I like UVa or GT (big markets) but I'm not picky. I'd also like a long term deal with TCU but I don't think it will happen. If they could get a long term deal with any Big12 team they should take it.

The last piece is targeting the teams most likely to make it to the next level: UNLV, UCF, Uconn, Cincinnati, BSU, SDSU. Get long term deals similar to the BSU deal with these schools without an out if the school enters a p5 conference.

BYU needs to build their brand. When independence first started and we heard about the 10 year contracts with BSU and UH along with 4 planned games against GT I was really excited because I thought we would add one with Utah, USU and another two PAC schools. With that foundation I think BYU would be much better placed than where they are now with all the 1-1 matchups they have now.

Kicking the butts of all of our opponents would help us build the brand

JV is on the right track. We need to get over the delusion that we are an elite program that is better than almost everyone else.

Play P5 schools like WSU, Utah, CAL, Colorado, AZ, KU, Iowa State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue, GA Tech, Virginia, etc., on a 1 for 1 basis every opportunity we get.

If I were Tom Holmoe, I would try and build towards something that reflects the following:

A scheduling agreement with the Pac 12 for 3 games a year. Included in this agreement, Utah on an annual basis in October (conference weekend), a game at home in September and a game on the road in November. Rotation through the conference set by the Pac 12.

A scheduling agreement with the Big 12 for 1 to 2 games per year. This will help its lower level conference members pick up some SOS. September or October games.

A scheduling agreement with the Big 10 to play each of their teams over a 20 year period. Some 1 and done games, others home and home.

Extend the agreements with BSU and USU. Try and get them both in November. That may not be possible since they are both in the same league. If not, BSU in October, USU in November.

If possible, resurrect the Hawaii agreement.

Scheduling agreement with AAC for 3 to 4 games a year.

ND when available

FCS team when necessary.

Using this year’s and next year’s dates (Saturdays except for Conference weekend), the schedules would look something like this:

2014

8/30/14 @UConn (AAC)

9/6/14 @Texas (Big 12)

9/13/14 UCLA (Pac 12)

9/20/14 Penn St (Big 10)

9/27/14 Bye

10/3/14 @Utah (Pac 12)

10/11/14 Houston (AAC)

10/18/14 Memphis (AAC)

10/25/14 @Boise St

11/1/14 Bye

11/8/14 @UCF (AAC)

11/15/14 Savannah St (FCS)

11/22/14 Utah State (MWC)

11/29/14 @California (Pac 12)

2015

8/29/15 UConn (AAC)

9/5/15 @Texas Tech (Big 12)

9/12/15 California (Pac 12)

9/19/15 @Penn State (Big 10)

9/26/15 Iowa State (Big 12)

10/2/15 Utah (Pac 12)

10/10/15 Bye

10/17/15 @Memphis (AAC)

10/24/15 Boise State (MWC)

10/31/15 @SMU (AAC)

11/7/15 Bye

11/14/15 Cincinnati (AAC) or a FCS team

11/21/15 @UCLA

11/28/15 @USU

Also, Holmoe should try and work with the Pac 12/Big 12/AAC for bowl tie ins if at all possible.

This is a few years away, obviously. But this is where I'd like to see BYU if they don't get in to a P5 conference.

I wonder a lot about all of this. Are we really at the breaking point right now? it almost seems surreal that BYU football might be close to being wiped out.

If so, this has to be an undefeated season to make a difference doesn't it? Honestly, another so so performance and we stay off the radar. Make some noise this season and who knows?

I don't think agreements with conferences are what BYU needs. A rotating slate of schools from the PAC or Big 12 or any conference does nothing to build BYU's brand long term as an independent.

The goal should be 5-6 P5 + (BSU, USU, UCF, Houston and UH/SDSU) games per year with the same teams every year. Of course I would love it if one of those teams were USC and another were with ND but I don't see it happening. If I were TH I'd schedule three PAC12 games in August/September and one in November and try to get games against an ACC and Big12 teams in October. A long term deal with anyone in the P5 is better than a 1-1 with a great team as it builds a rivalry which helps with the brand. And brand is what you need if you want to stay independent.

I think one of the great things about independence is NOT playing the same teams every single season. We still need some stability but IMO being locked in to playing the same 9 teams every season is not nearly as exciting as facing a number of new teams each season (I am NOT saying that we should have no long term deals with any teams - just that we need a balance of new teams to play each season).

TH needs to go to the Big 12 and beg. That is the only thing that helps LT.

No matter who we schedule I see a tough time making a major difference unless we are included. One or two years of playing a few good teams does nothing. We need consistency in SOS and we need to win, we have lacked this attribute (not beating a big name when down - UT '13, ND '04 etc etc).

Otherwise we need to all come to grips with lower tier bowls indefinitely and plan to be excluded. The P5's are making a huge effort to consolidate the power and exclude anyone else, including BYU. The only solution is to join a conference that is in the P5.

BYU will NOT get ND's independent opportunities anytime soon. BYU is good program but interms of reputation and ability to generate revenue they are not in the same stratosphere. BYU is a great independent if you compare them to the bottom half of P5 conferences (Utah, Washington State, Northwestern, Iowa State, etc) and non-P5 conferences, but they can't compete with the big guys (they can from time to time on the field but not in revenues and reputation). Having a national brand like BYU, generally consists of LDS folks, which is great for mid-tier bowls but not near the cache of ND (independent) or the top half of big conferences.

If you think about it, why is BYU particularly attractive as an independent? They are not. They bring nothing that the P5 doesn't already have, so what incentive do they have to spread the wealth of scheduling? BYU is a threat to upset top schools, so why use one of their slots for patsies in a game they could lose......why not slot in UNM or Bo Didley Tech for auto wins and gear up for the seasons big games?

To conclude the only way to get where we want is through a P5 conference, everything else is a Band-Aid to a gun shot wound. Otherwise BYU will nearly always be excluded, even if BYU fielded a top 5 team the power conferences would do everything possible to exclude them.

In the meantime the only thing BYU can do is win.

Begging won't help. I hope I'm wrong but BYU won't get into a P5 conference anytime in the near future. BYU should build what it can and I think it is totally reasonable to get 4 PAC schools per year and work on a rivalry with TCU or UVa or GT and ND.

I think the biggest hit BYU has taken is losing ND when they went to the ACC. I was hoping they could schedule them on conference championship weekend on a rotating South Bend, Provo, Honolulu schedule.

You are right begging won't help. A big issue is playing on Sunday, no way to negotiate around that.

ND could be an issue for BYU. Considering ND is now booked 5 ACC games a year plus: USC, Stanford, Navy. That is 8 games and ND always has some other games they will play but now rotate through, examples: Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue etc. The schedule is now very crowded and there are others who have deals that are upcoming: Texas etc.

Unfortunately BYU may need to be over accommodating to ND and definitely BYU will not be a yearly competitor to ND, likely similar to what we see now. I can tell you that the ND alums would not be happy with BYU year in and year out, they would rather just re-ink Michigan to a long-term deal, same with Michigan State or there had been talk of ND and UT doing something L/T given they have their own networks and setting something mutually beneficial. BYU is not to the point yet, they are a partner of convenience. BYU does not drive additional revenue, exposure nor is located in a place that helps recruiting.

That means BYU needs to sign up top non-P5 players year, plus sign up Utah and get others on board by rotating PAC 12 and Big 12 teams. I am not too worried abut the ACC and SEC not including BYU as we rarely play them, BUT it does set a bad precedent for other conference.

TH has a lot of work to do........honestly I do not envy him.

Win. Win. Win. No matter who you schedule. Hold your coaches accountable. Don't hire back coaches that have proven to not be able to get it done against even matched teams even with your most elite of elite talent in the huddle and in your record books.

It doesn't matter WHO we schedule if we lose to them. THolmoe's primary job isn't by the phone, it is in and out of practices making sure that the coaches and players are putting in a full day's work. It is flying around looking for coordiinators when the current ones inevitably lose to that one or two teams per year that they shouldn't be losing.

True, and there is no excuse for not winning year in and year out with the schedule we have......this year there is no excuse for sub-10 wins.

That being said college football is all about $$$$. TH's main job is to get deals done and put BYU in a position to get through the conference re-alignment/playoff in the right manner. No exuses.

Secondarily he must watch BM, but the assistant coaches are the HC's call not TH's (he can approve). TH must push BM and make him accountable and stop the talk and get W's against opponents.

BYU-ND Conference championship weekend every year in Honolulu or somewhere else that gets them both to 13 games.

I doubt that ND wants 13 games. I doubt they want to risk playing BYU 5 time zones from home. It seems BYU no longer wants 13 games either.

It is the same reason Big 12 does not want a championship game. It risks 1 more loss.

The beauty contest each year is much more punishing of an extra loss than rewarding of any extra win. Much more. Infinitely more.

Teams that are serious about competing for national championships do not risk taking losses. They avoid road games. Rarely leave the timezone. Eat cupcakes OOC. 1 and done. 2 for 1.
