Argument for Group of Five

Cincinnati is projected to be chosen by the CFP selection committee to play in the Peach Bowl (non-playoff "access" bowl). Cincinnati. The Bearcats would earn this selection by winning the American conference championship and by looking better than the champions from the MWC, MAC, C-USA, and Sun Belt.



Other contenders for the Group of Five spot in the CFP include: Central Florida and Houston from the American; Boise St., Fresno St. and Utah St. from the MWC; and Northern Illinois from the MAC. BYU plays four of these seven contenders in 2014. BYU could BEAT ALL FOUR and still not have a chance to sniff a CFP access bowl (most likely Fiesta or Cotton) - even if two of the four end up winning their respective conferences.



Food for thought.

I hope it happens. We would get a lot of positive press on the issue to our benefit.

We have not only managed to get left out of P5, but the Group of 5 as well.



That does not leave us with a great peer group. Luckily, we are clearly different than the others that are standing out in the cold. We could join a Group of 5 conference at the snap of a finger. They would welcome us. So, do not look for a lot of help from them to sacrifice any Bowl access advantage to help us continue to snub them.

BYU would have to go undefeated to make an access bowl whether they were independent or in a conference. There is no benefit to conference membership in a G5 conference. How many years have there been when there wasn't a G5 member that was 11-1 in the past 15 years? None. So to guarantee a spot in the access bowl BYU would have to be undefeated anyway. Even that wouldn't do it either.

In the end, BYU needs to go undefeated before they worry too much about the fact that they live outside the bubble.

Looking at the other bowl matchups there are some slots that were replacement teams. A few are better games. I wish we had rolled the dice to take one of those slots. Even still ESPN could move us.

Last year we got a 4 loss Bowl opponent and got whipped.



We have a more winnable schedule this year. Hopefully our young men can rise up. Most likely, BY I will not be favored in 2 or 3 games.
