Approach all the conferences and see if we can get this worked out somehow:

3 games annually with Big12, rotate 2 away 1 home

3 games annually with Pac12, rotate 2 home 1 away

1 game with SEC rotate home away

1 game with ACC rotate home away

1 game with BIG rotate home away

that's 9 games per year, very little responsibility on the P5 conferences parts, + inclusion, until such time as a conference invites BYU to join.

We tell them that they have us travel to a good team and send their crappy team to us. Our schedule would be filled with P5 games. It establishes us as a P5 team. I love it.

I love it too. Let's make so.

How are we going to get an agreement with the Pac 12 to do 2 home and one away game per year? That's beyond a pipe dream. I'm not aware of us ever getting a home and away with an SEC team either.

Absolutely this is a great schedule, but I also think that driving a Lamborghini to work with an unlimited fuel supply is a great idea too. It ain't gonna happen though.

We currently have 2 games per year with the PAC12 in most upcoming years. The other conferences are the ones Holmoe would have to work on as they are currently pretty sparsely scheduled--though that home/away mix is not likely to happen.

2014: PAC12 (@ Cal), Big12 (@ Texas), ACC (Virginia)

2015: B1G x2 (@ Nebraska, @ Michigan)

2016: PAC12 x2 (@ Arizona - N, @ Utah), Big12 (@ West Virginia - N)

2017: PAC12 x2(Utah, Cal)

2018: PAC12 x2 (@ Arizona, @ Utah), B1G (@ Wisconsin)

2019: PAC12 (@ Washington State), B1G (Wisconsin), ACC (@ Virginia)

2020: PAC12 x3 (Arizona, @ Arizona State, @ Stanford), ACC (Virginia)

2021: PAC12 x2 (Arizona State, @ USC)

2022: PAC12 (@ Stanford)

2023: PAC12 x2 (Stanford, @ USC)

2024:

2025: PAC12 (Stanford)

We also have the Notre Dame series (4 more games) that are not accounted for yet since we don't know the years they will be there (no earlier than 2017).

We're not going to get the conferences themselves to agree to that kind of format. What's in it for the conferences? Our last SEC matchup was on the ROAD at Ole Miss, an SEC doormat.

But I think we absolutely can (and TH intends to) follow a similar model for simple scheduling strategy. Personally, I think 6-7 games per season would be plenty. No other team EVER plays more than 2 games against another P5 conference in any season - because of schedule capacity and competitiveness.

BYU needs the MWC and AAC games (and occasional MAC/Sun Belt/C-USA) to balance out the schedule and keep regional interest (especially for MWC).

PAC 12: 2-3

ACC: 2

Big Ten/Notre Dame: 1-2

SEC/Big 12: 1

MWC: 2-3

AAC: 2-3

C-USA/Sun Belt: 1

The schedule anomalies created by Notre Dame with the PAC 12 and ACC will make those two conference important for late-season matchups. Note that we have NOVEMBER matchups with PAC 12 teams in 4 of the next 8 seasons (California, Utah, Stanford, and USC). I think we will eventually get October and November matchups with ACC opponents once the Notre-Dame matchups start create holes in the late-season ACC schedules.

This is what BYU needs to do:

September

SEC/Big 12 Matchup (neutral site if we can't get H/H)

Big Ten/PAC 12

PAC 12

MWC/AAC

October

AAC

MWC (Boise St.)

ACC

C-USA/Sun Belt

November

Notre Dame/Big Ten

MWC (Utah St.)

ACC

PAC 12 (Utah, USC, Stanford, Cal, UCLA)

This USA Today article gives us a little more insight to what BYU is actually doing with the schedule:

"With nine-game conference schedules, it's not gonna be as easy for us," Aresco said. .....our league has almost developed a quasi-alliance with BYU. We really did that on purpose.....

I see 3-4 AAC teams on upcoming BYU schedules and expect that to continue into the future. Personally, I don't think it's that bad to have 6-8 games every year involving AAC and MWC opponents. As long as BYU wins and can still get 4-6 P5 opponents on the schedule.

Back to the OP, which some may have misunderstood who gets the 2 home and who gets the 1 in return -

I think he meant we would give PAC and BIG 12 a couple of games on their turf for one game Iin Provo. That would be the incentive for the P5 conferences who love to take every opportunity to stack the deck in their favor. They would probably do it. That would be suicidal for BYU. Maybe Spiff can pop some stats on here for BYU win % Vs P5 teams to sober up that idea.

We have had the opportunity to see two teams that had been owning BYU try to prove they could compete in PAC and Big 12 with an even playing field. Ask TCU and Utah how that worked out. Colorado has played in both leagues. Ask them how that worked out. Arizona. ASU. Seriously.

Now imagine one of those teams giving 2 for 1 and trying to compete. BYU would fare no better, especially given the realities of recruiting and retaining honor code committed athletes.

I would be fine with playing them straight up, though, and hoping we win at least half of them.

Bronco vs P5 teams (note, I do not count the games vs Utah or TCU when they were conference foes but I do include Notre Dame).

I count 31 games. BYU is 14-17 (.452) in those games

11 of those games were in Provo. BYU was 6-5 (.545) in those games.

7 of those games were at neutral sites. BYU was 4-3 (.571) in those games.

13 of those games were on the road. BYU was 4-7 (.364) in those games.

Additionally, as a side note to another thread. Since 2009, BYU has played 7 times in either all-whites or royal blue vs current P5 teams. BYU is 2-5 (.285) in those games.

Just rotating teams within a league won't ever allow BYU to build the brand they need to stay independent. Look at ND. They built their brand playing the same teams over and over. Also, I think the relationship ND has with Pitt and BC (who weren't ever real power players) allowed them to get their ACC deal.

In an ideal world I'd like a ND schedule from before the affiliation with the ACC ( Michigan, MSU, Purdue, USC, Stanford, Pittsburgh, BC and the academies).

This means yearly contracts with Utah (Purdue) and 4-5 other BCS schools. Pick any California PAC school and that would be amazing, but we'd have a better shot with either AZ school or UW. The rest aren't really worth the effort. Try for a Texas (TCU) and Florida (Miami) school.

Here's what I would like:

Start out with 3 PAC schools out of the gate like ND did with the B1G schools and get one PAC school after Thanksgiving. But keep the same schools whichever they are. Build the brand. Try to get TCU and Miami/GT/Virginia or whoever on the east coast but keep it the same team as much as possible. Get 6 BCS schools and keep them happy. Try to line up Army and AF. Keep BSU and USU too. I think BSU is less important in the long run but they might regain their stature. And spread the last 3 games a year between whichever teams we need.

So that's a pipe dream and won't ever happen. But look down the road to see which teams BYU should be targeting that might get picked up by the major conferences: UNLV, UNR, UCF, USF, Houston, SMU, Cincinnati, UConn. We should offer long term contracts (6-10 years) with all of them. ND didn't build their brand in a day and BC, Pittsburgh, and Stanford (and even USC) haven't always been power teams.

I'd try to get yearly deals with SDSU and UNLV (and rotate SJSU, Fresno and UH - BYU needs games in recruiting beds). The rest of the MWC is worthless.

Here's an ideal strategy (9-10 games per season, including 6-8 P5 opponents):

PAC 12 (3-4):

Utah (obviously, as a rival)

USC and Stanford (Notre Dame schedule holes)

Arizona schools (proximity)

It's okay if BYU plays a lot on the PAC 12 network.

ACC (1-2):

Georgia Tech

Miami

Syracuse

- play at least one every year (fill in Notre Dame/ACC holes)

Independent (1):

Get Notre Dame on the schedule as much as possible - even if 2-for-1 and preferably in October or November;

Army is a good option too.

Big 12 (1-2):

Go big and go after Texas. May be H/H/"N" in Dallas/Houston/San Antonio/Las Vegas

Secondary: TCU - or Baylor? Kansas?

MWC (3-4):

Utah St.

Boise St.

UNLV

CSU or Air Force

Hawaii

- Rotate Nevada, Fresno St., SJSU, SDSU, and even Wyoming, but focus on the above list.

Las Vegas and Denver offer proximity and potential.

AAC (1-2):

Houston

UCF

Navy

Gets us in Texas and Florida and big markets. Navy has the special institution angle.

BYU could really piggy back off Notre Dame, and not just in following their method of operation, but by filling in some of the holes created by Notre Dame in PAC 12 and ACC conference schedules. You can already see this in BYU's future schedules (not until 2019, unfortunately) with Stanford and USC schedule-staples from 2019 to 2025.

The Arizona schools, UNLV, Boise St., and CSU offer proximity (which is underrated), history (WAC, MWC) and potential.

Utah St. and Hawaii have history and a rivalry element.

I note that UCF is crying about having two openings in 2015 and that no one is calling because of their recent success. BYU should be all over that.
