OT: Jake Heaps loses starting job to Cozart

Per tweets today (retweeted by Greg Wrubell), Jake Heaps lost the starting QB job in Kansas to sophomore Montell Cozart. Perhaps this shows that it wasn't a matter of the BYU coaching staff just not getting the most out of him.

I hear loud wailing and knashing of teeth coming from Lawrence, KS. Anxiety and dismay settle in.

I actually feel sorry for Jake, and his young bride. They had dreams of NFL sugar-plums dancing in their heads. All future plans dashed. Good luck.

Too bad. He should have gone to a FCS school. Going to Kansas was just a bad decision. QBs succeed with good talent around them and that just wasn't going to happen there.

Embedded within the character of those denying to know such a public figure is--

-An individual suffering from a traumatic brain injury, or

-A person with Alzheimer's, or

-a total moron.

Ruling those out, it seems quite clear that there are few alternatives:

-a person still unforgivingly hating on another person that caused them personal suffering, or

-a child who thinks they can put their hands over their eyes and act like something still doesn't exist, or

-a hypocrititcal idiot who thinks that others reading the supposed denial actually believe that the thing that person is purporting has any believability at all.

Totally false statement. Jake WAS certainly capable of being a QB at the FBS level. He had little to no help at BYU in regards to a line for protection. He then transfered DOWN to Kansas where anyone would struggle.

I feel for the kid. He did what he thought was best for him, and for that you can't fault him. Saying he wasn't capable of playing at FBS level is not true.

I disagree. I don't think he would have been successfully anywhere at the FBS level. But its okay if you feel differently.

I do think he could have thrived at the FCS level, for what its worth.

Mars, just wondering why you believe that the new Qb will be any better than Jake (which shouldn't be hard to do). The guy averaged well under 50% completion rate.

And hawk, thank you for so kindly providing your permission to disagree. For the record I do disagree with you. Jake Heaps was a decent o-line, and some much needed confidence away from being a decent-good FBS QB. Certainly had the arm and the proper training. I was genuinely excited to see him in BYU blue his first couple games and imagining what was in his future. We all know that got derailed and he became a psych case WITHOUT an offensive line. Guy was the closest thing we've had in years to getting a win in utah WITH broken ribs.

This is coming from a Riley Nelson fan who believed that Jake should have been playing second fiddle from day one to Nelson. I didn't like what was reported about Jake's attitude, his blaming of everyone else on the team, his entitlement problem and that he left when he could have stuck around and been much better at BYU than he would ever be at KU. BUT, it doesn't change that he obviously had enough skills to be successful as a QB with the right tools around him and some mental help.

He did go to a FCS school. Unfortunately, they play too many Big 12 teams.

Maybe Jake can graduate, if he hasn't already done so, and transfer again. UCF may need a QB. FCS? It is never too late to quit.

Actually, with Cozart starting, Jake can enjoy a season of being the best QB, stuck on the bench due to bad coaching. Then maybe make a James Lark type finish after Cozart goes down.

Jake has a timing problem. No, not just his failure to get timing in synch in real games with big fast pass rushers - a timing problem where the game changed on him and statuesque QBs are being replaced by more mobile and even dual threat QBS.

But, mainly, Jake was just a heartbeat.... wait...just a heart and a little desire, and a lot of work, and a smidge of humility short of greatness.

It ain't over till its over. Rise up Jake. Cozart will not last 12 games.

BUT, it doesn't change that he obviously had enough skills to be successful as a QB with the right tools around him and some mental help.

The problem with only being an offensive line away from being adequate is that there is no offensive line in the country that can stop all pressure and Heaps cannot handle any pressure from the FBS level talent. I think he'd do much better against the smaller, slower guys in FCS, but even on Alabama I think he'd struggle behind that line.

He finished the second half of his freshman year 5-1 with 13 touchdowns vs 2 interceptions and threw for nearly 1,300 yard and was the MVP of the bowl game. He also was the only BYU QB to win a bowl game as a freshman.

There's a big range from the SEC to the former WAC and everyone in that range is "FBS." I have no doubt that with the right coach on the right team he could have been a "successfull" qb in the eyes of some team between SEC and WAC.

However by the time he left it clearly wasn't BYU.
