Is it just me, or do many of the "lower bowls" seem like they''ll be better games to watch than the BCS bowls? :sick:

Interesting point. I actually did a quick-n-dirty point spread analysis of the history of the BCS bowls versus the last few years' lower-tier bowl games a couple seasons back (I'll have to hunt it down and share the highlights). My reason for doing this was actually because one of the BCS's Stated Intents is to "create competative matchups" in the non Title BCS bowls. What I found, ON AVERAGE, the BCS bowl games were more than a TOUCHDOWN more lopsided than the lower-tier bowls. Think about what that means statistically. That's EMBARRASING. Most bowl games are bad enough as it is. It's just funny that year-in and year-out, the LEAST competative games are, in fact, the BCS games.

Could be that every 20 seconds or so the station is taking another break, creating 5 hour long beatdowns that don't entertain anyone.

Okay, so it was bugging me not being able to find that excel sheet, so I dug it up. To set the record straight, I was incorrect (misremembered?).



The average difference in spread between BCS and non-BCS games was "only" about 2 points (this was using all BCS games thru '07, and the '07 non-BCS games as the comparison (statistically similar case sizes -- 32 total BCS games to 27 non-BCS games in '07)), however, adjusting for (the grossest of) outliers by removing the two highest and lowest spreads, that difference jumps to ALMOST FOUR POINTS.



What this information boils down to is that these matchups the BCS claims are to "create competitive matchups," are actually, ON AVERAGE, more than a field goal WORSE BLOWOUTS than the matchups that are decided almost completely by CHANCE!!! And forgetting how much better or worse the matchups were, the AVERAGE BCS game spread is OVER TWO TOUCHDOWNS, ON ITS OWN MERITS. They can't even get their AVERAGE "competitive matchup" to within TWO TOUCHDOWNS!!! And these are the best college football minds in America. Amazing!



This means that EITHER the BCS Good-ol-boys are completely INCOMPETENT at actually DELIVERING on these "competitive matchups," or that little portion of their stated goals is an absolute LIE, and the ONLY reason for including the non-title BCS games is to assure that the right conferences get the right money. (Both??? Thinkin' SO.)



They're making a glorified DROP!!!
