Fantasy: WCC Commissioner to PAC-12 = BYU to Pac-12?

I just read an article about Notre Dame's access to the new college football playoff process. The article mentioned that Notre Dame, Army, and BYU are the only remaining independents and posited that BYU will eventually be snatched up by a conference and named the Big 12 as an example.



Here is a thought. Since the new assistant commissioner of the PAC 12 is coming in with a fresh, fairly intimate, and successful experience adding BYU to the WCC (especially in reference to the utility of BYU-TV), what are the chances he will:



1. Suggest the addition of BYU to the PAC-12?

2. Champion such a suggestion?

3. Succeed if he does?

4. On what terms would BYU agree - especially in reference to BYU-TV?

Here's BYU's 1 and only requirement.



No Sunday play ever, for any sport in which it participates.



Everything else is negotiable.

Won't happen. Pac 12 schools are prejudice against religion.

1. Nil. Why would he jeopardize his career trajectory?

2. Less than Nil. Why would he commit career suicide?

3. Snowballs chance in hell.

4. No Sunday play. Maybe insistence on secondary TV rights.

So, I've been flipping around the net reading articles about the unionization, and I think it relates to this topic as well. I'm with hawkwing; if the unionization comes to fruition, it will be the end of college sports at BYU and probably across the country, as we know it now. How does that relate? If there were any talks going on between any conference and any school, I'm pretty certain they are on hold indefinitely. Why bring in a school that might just turn around and drop the sport in the near future?

There has been talk of BYU-Hawaii dropping sports like BYU-Idaho did. But I'd be completely shocked if BYU went that same route.

There has been more than talk. It has been reported as a done deal by several newspapers.

Report: BYU-Hawaii to phase out athletics over three years

The intercollegiate athletics program at BYU-Hawaii appears to be headed towards an end.



KSL, citing a source close to the situation, reported Wednesday that the school will phase out its athletic program over three years. This comes on the heels of a Hawaii News Now report from Tuesday that the school is considering major changes to its athletics department, and that a closed-door meeting occured Monday at the school to discuss the situation.



BYU-Hawaii is a member of the Pacific West Conference, which includes Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. The Seasiders compete in 11 sports.



The KSL source refuted the idea that the move is being made for financial purposes.



From the Hawaii News Now story: "A closed-door meeting took place Monday between various Seasider coaches and administrators; one that allowed those present to voice their concern and to clear the air about the long-running rumor that the only university on the north shore of Hawaii could lop off one of the limbs that's helped BYU-H carve out an identity."



The phasing out of athletics at BYU-Hawaii would have an effect on the state of Utah. Of the school's 11 sports programs, only one — women's volleyball — does not include a Utahn on the current roster. There are 47 Utahns on Seasiders teams this year, including 13 on the men's soccer team and 12 on the women's soccer squad.



Also, Ken Wagner — who has coached basketball at both the high school and college levels in Utah — is BYU-Hawaii's current athletic director and men's basketball coach. The BYU and University of Utah graduate has coached the Seasiders since 1990, leading the team to the NCAA Division II tournament Elite Eight three times. In 2011, BYU-Hawaii was the national runner-up in men's basketball.



Major change to a successful athletics program wouldn't be unprecedented for an LDS Church-owned university. Fourteen years ago, Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho), in Rexburg, Idaho, announced the elimination of its intercollegiate athletics department. It was replaced with a robust intramural sports program.
