Team without Kyle??

So if we get into the NCAA Tourny what do we do without Kyle? Does Carlino start now? Does Bartley see a huge uptick in minutes? How does Rose manage the 4 without Kyle? Can Pingree do any good once we get into foul trouble and Sharp is too small to do any good? I wish Aytes would have signed with us to begin with. Austin will have to start asserting himself offensively like he did in the NIT. I would hate to be Rose right about now

I think Carlino has to start.



The bench becomes a lot tricker. Who plays backup point guard? Halford? Winder?



When Austin sits I guess Sharp and Bartley our best backup PF options.



I think for a few games we can gut things out on D and on the boards.



My concern is how to do we replace KC's scoring and play-making?



We are going to need the good Carlino to show-up. Hopefully Bartley will have a few good games. I don't think Winder can be asked to do more. Maybe Austin will start to look at the hoop.

KC's loss is big, but I think we can absorb it. The good news is with the exception to the Gonzaga game Winder has been on a tear averaging roughly 15 pts/game as a starter.



MC will likely start and hopefully Winder too. That gives us three starters that can easily score 15 points a game. Mika will chip in his 10. The question is where will we get the rest of our scoring.



If we go dancing, I don't think Rose goes to the bench much. He's going to have to rely heavy on the starters.



He can rotate Worthington and Sharp in down low to spell Austin and Mika. He can also rotate Bartley and Halford in to spell the backcourt.



We'll miss KC the most on the boards and the mismatch he provides on offense as a guard.

Could be a blessing in disguise idk. Maybe as a smaller lineup they spread the floor a little better and hit some 3's. This team needs some sort of miracle to get out of the first day of the tourney.

Blessing in disguise? Seriously. The team certainly played inspired after he went down, but the next opponent will be prepared for the replacements that caught Gonzaga off-guard. BYU needs a weak opponent to advance.

And 1. You've got to be kidding. KC is the MVP right now and an argument could be made for the whole season--if he hadn't missed a few critical game clinching free throws. But w TH struggling lately, he has carried this team and arguably could have been Co-MVP. I'm glad its only one game. Maybe two.

But, maybe the MC believers and KC haters will finally get their wish and see this team sans KC at the point. If Matty-basketball shows up like he has in several games in his career maye we could steal a victory. But if THE committee and former WCC commish don't stiff BYU, i would bet serious cash, we get the Mr Irrelevant last one in, play-in game--which last time did take a miracle comeback to win vs Iona. BYU will have earned the " play-in" rep which stinks. But, oh well. But for a few free throws.....

And the trolls pounce...I'm just trying to put a positive spin on things. I have said since the first game of the season that KC is our best all-around player. Without him we have little chance, but our half-court offense sucks so bad that maybe we become a 3 point shooting team with him gone and actually make a few. The odds are 5% that this happens, but I'm trying to retain some reason to care about the rest of the bball season.

It's not trolling for those guys to respond to something you said that seems to them to be silly and illogical. It's great that you're trying to be positive, maybe keep that attitude when referring to your CC fellows.

So are we the letter of the law or spirit of the law guys? Like Bronco said, a bunch of Pharisees. I get his point. There is an opportunity for others to step up and grow. I hopt Austin works on his shots, takes some and make them. I would love to see him make a move and score a bucket for us.

The other blessing in disguise is that if kyle redshirts to make sure of his knee, then that helps our log jam at the small forward position (i don't consider KC to be a pg at the college level), and it can give him some time away from the lights to work on his jumpshot and free free throws, which is in my opinion the only thing keeping him out of the NBA (also man defense if he is planning on guard).

KC won't red shirt unless absolutely necessary.



I hope at the very least his absence lights a fire under the team and we play with some purpose. MC can score. Haws can score. Winder can score.

This is the opportunity for Rose to change his role. It could be as subtle as saying do not pass up shots when you are open or as obvious as we are going to specifically do this and that to get you more scoring opportunities.



He has often passed up open shots. It will make a 5 pig difference for him if he just takes the shots he already could be taking. I would guess that he has been told in the past to try to get the ball to Haws or KC unless late in the shot clock.



That is likely going to change to - if you are open from this range or these spots - shoot the ball.

I like the play they run for Sharp to get him a layup. Run it for Austin. If he became a scorer, that should surprise the other team.

It has happened a few times. Austin usually manages to fumble the pass or catch with his feet in an awkward position so he only goes up softly.

Although the focus is not on Austin. Yes, he will need to step up and yes, Rose probably gave him new marching orders, which I believe Austin will obediently respond with more shot attempts.

The larger issue is whether or not Carlino will step up and run this team the way he should and could or the way he has in past when he has played Matty basketball and not BYU basketball--the very shortcomings that caused him to lose his starting role as a PG. This will be an interesting test for MC. Without KC who was owning and running this team, will MC have learned his lesson? Will he pull the team together or stay in his own disjointed world?

Sure Austin and others will have to step up. But, when you lose the best player on your team (yes, TH is the best scorer and WCC MVP, and also indispensible, but not best all around player) life isn't good. I really wouldn't be surprised if the NCAA takes a dump on BYU and drops them. BYU has probably never been as conspicuously on the bubble as they this year, and with the loss of KC, it would be totally justifiable to the rest of the college hoops world.
