The Scholarship Crunch Dilemma

Of those 15 players, Johnston and Pingree are walk-ons. Neilson is a RM red-shirting this year. Fischer and Aytes are transfer players on scholarship.



Mika is leaving on a mission next season and Coach Rose needs to make room for two more players coming in. Worthington does not have mission plans currently. Bartley is not LDS.



BYU has no Seniors currently, but there are 7 Juniors on the team. Assume that no Freshman or Sophomore (Kyle Collinsworth) is having their schollie pulled yet. Of the seven Jrs, 5 are Guards: Carlino, Fischer, Halford, Haws, and Winder (The 2 others Jrs are both Forwards, Austin and Sharp).



Bartley, Carlino, Halford, Winder. I think there's only room for 3 of them on the team next season (assuming KC doesn't miss the year due to medical injury). Those guys are all 6-1 to 6-3. Expect Fischer, Haws, Collinsworth, and Aytes to get plenty of minutes next season... those guys are all 6-3 to 6-6. With Neilson/Worthington/Austin playing the 4/5 (PF/C), that doesn't leave a whole bunch of room for 4 back-up point guards... This also puts Sharp in an awkward position as the 6th-best player height 6-6 or taller (Sharp is 6-7).



Minutes played this season:

Carlino has 893 (4th most).

Winder has 532 (6th most).

Halford has 512 (7th).

Bartley has 332 (8th).

Sharp has 326 (9th).

Worthington has 237 (10th).



Worthington's height will be needed with Mika leaving. Winder has truly come into his own late in the season, and is proving to be a good defender. Bartley is a freshman. Could Carlino be unhappy enough to transfer? Just how worried should Halford and Sharp be?



Carlino came to BYU in 2010 from UCLA. Sharp joined the team in 2011 (a transfer from Utah). Halford just joined the team in 2013, from SLCC. You don't want to do anything but reward transfers, especially a guy from your main rival, but you don't want to yank a scholarship after one season either. It's tough.



Carlino is shooting 39% this season. 34% from 3, 68% free throw shooting.

Halford, 44% shooting, 32% from 3, 85% free throws.

Sharp, 65% shooting, 0-of-2 from deep, 58% free throws.



Carlino has averaged 13.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 27.1 minutes per game (2013-14).

Halford averages 7.2 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 15.2 mpg.

Sharp averages 1.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.4 assists in 10.6 mpg.





I wonder how close Sharp is to earning his Bachelor's degree?.....

Sharp and Worthington. It's an easy decision. Aytes will get both of their minutes, and they won't be missed. Halford could also go, instead of Worthington. People seem to think that Fischer will start at SG and be our main 3pt threat.



Carlino is the only person on our team that knows how to break a press and pass the ball to someone wearing the same jersey.



Winder could be our starting SG, unless Fischer supplants him. I honestly don't know much about the new people coming in and their talent level. (Transfers, etc)



I would say Halford could get pulled, as he is the odd man out if Winder gets minutes, but I don't know if Rose would ask someone to come over from SLCC one year and bounce him the next...Of course, that did happen last year, so maybe. I also like Halfords man defense. He is our second best defender, after Carlino.

Pretty easy call. Also, Aytes can score and is aggressive with the ball. He might even start PF for us. Think Keena Young but less finesse and more power.

Sharp might be useful if he could somehow gain 25 to 30lbs in the offseason. You have to remember Aytes won't be eligible until January and KC could be sidelined until then as well

We have plenty of guards - Carlino, Haws, Winder, Bartley, Fischer, KC, and Chatman.



Halford isn't going to get any better. He was brought in to shoot threes and didn't do that. He's too small and his handles aren't strong enough to play point.



Sharp, while not necessarily a productive player, has some size and height. Should Aytes or KC go down or get in foul trouble we could use Sharp.



My guess, we'll see the walk-ons exit and someone be politely asked to give up their scholarship. Don't need a scholarship to play on the team.

Halford is a terrible defender (worst except for Haws).



Halford is the only non-D1 athlete on the team.



The answer is easy: Halford should not be on scholarship next season.



That may seem harsh, but the last game Halford got any real minutes was Pacific. It was clear he was trying really hard. It was also clear that he was the only player on either team that didn't belong.

I dont how you can watch the Gonzaga game and say that he is the worst defender on the team. He played much much better defense than winder in his limited minutes. Winder was constantly getting beat and reaching from behind and Halford kept everyone in front of him. I wonder how that means "worst defense" on the team? Give credit where it is due, at least

Assuming red-shirts consume a scholarship, using a schollie for a year waiting for transfers to be eligible hurts or for medical redshirts. Also player development or mission leg recovery redshirts. Can't afford to do so much of this - unless they do not consume a schollie. I think they do. Anyone know for sure?



I suggest that every player be told that we will have a FT shooting contest in August by group with a quota of needed players for each group. Guards. Other. Choose scholarships based on FT shooting. The contest should utilize the ROC behind the basket and other noise and distractions and should be taken 1 and 1 with players rotating over and over so they do not just get 100 in a row.

Needless to say, rumors of Sharp's transfer did not make new Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak a very happy camper. Last Friday, Krystkowiak released a statement accusing BYU of "taking advantage of a loophole" by recruiting Sharp while he was away on mission:



"It is my understanding that there is an unwritten rule that players cannot be recruited by other schools while they are serving missions. To do so is not only inappropriate, but it creates an atmosphere of ill will," Krystkowiak continued. "We hope that Josh returns to our team and wants to be part of what we are building here, but regardless of what happens, we remain strongly committed to recruiting the best players in the state of Utah."

I say put them all on the free throw line and whoever is best at 100 shots stays and who is not walks. (Only slightly TIC ;) )



It's going to be a tough decision and process and I really do hate to see any of them go because they've all had their moments...But...I'd rather win than have a repeat of this season and we have room for improvement and only tough decisions will get us there.
