Starters and Minutes

The title Starter is over-rated. Finisher might be more important. Minutes are representative of who the coach thinks is contributing the most of what the team needs. This data is thru the LMU game.

It shows starts and minutes. Haws missed two starts due to injury or he would have 32 starts and the most minutes. KC gets his minutes in multiple positions which is what makes him valuable. He is consistent like Haws, but much more versatile. If another guard heats up - KC can go 3 or 4 and allow Rose to keep the extra guard on the floor. If a player at 1, 2, 3, or 4 needs rest, gets in foul trouble, or goes cold, KC can move there and let another player fill in for him.

32 KC. 1070

32 Austin. 873

30 Haws. 1029

26 Mika. 757

15 Carlino. 865

13 Halford. 511

6 Winder. 498

3 Sharp. 313

3 Worthington. 230

0 Bartley. 329

Starting does not always translate to more starting time. Winder should pass Halford in minutes on Monday with half as many starts. Carlino has more minutes than Mika with 11 fewer starts and may catch Austin in minutes with less than half as many starts. Sharp and Worthington may continue to steal starts from Mika, but Mika will continue to get more minutes than both of them combined. Bartley has no starts, but more minutes than either player with 3 starts.

Whether you go by minutes or starts, the core 5 guys have been Haws, KC, MC, Austin, and Mika. Halford and Winder have enjoyed near starter minutes.

Last Year: Haws 36-1235, Davies 36-1054, Zylstra 33-928, Carlino 32-1034, Sharp 22-592, Cusick 12-689, Austin 7-631, Winder 1-250, Ambrosino 1-191, Calvert 0-207, Delgado 0-171, Kaufusi 0-128 and Harward 0-89.

Starter/finisher doesn't really matter. How many minutes a game is your best lineup on the floor together is the important thing. If your best 5 aren't starters, you already limit the amount of time they can be on the floor together, but strategically it's worked for BYU.

I would say that the best 5 man lineup for BYU is KC, Austin, Haws, Mika, and Carlino (top 5 in minutes, so probably accurate). The next best 5 is Winder in for either of the bigs (so that's two different lineups). And as soon as Winder passes Halford, that will be the case as well.

I also think Halford should be down in the Worthington area as far as minutes played.

Bartley has more minutes than Worthington and Sharp. Halford has certainly earned more minutes than Bartley. Bartley will be lucky to get even 10 more minutes this season. Halford will not see much more than that. Worthington and Sharp will continue to get 5-10 per game. Winder will likely average 20+ per game the rest of the way. So Winder will pass and separate from Halford while LW and JS gain ground on Bartley

Well I assuming that Carlino will need to start at PG now with Halford backing him up if Kyle is done for the year

Hopefully he steps up like he did in NIT a year ago. Hopefully is tendency to get tired and miss shots will not bite him. He will probably get 35 minutes or more. If he fouls out in 29 minutes like last night - deep trouble.
