Should Walters be COY?

I know COY is determined by the other WCC coaches, but I question whether he deserves it. I know Walters lost a bunch of players last year, had no idea in the last two years he's lost 11 players (that's an entire team's worth of talent) and he's burned through 6 different assistant coaches. How is that COY material?

Makes one appreciate Coach Rose all that much more. :)

Yes, he definitely deserves COY honors. To have that kind of turnover the past 2 years and get the results he did this year is amazing. I'm not sure I would want to play for him, but he did a great job putting his team and this season together.

Not sure it matters who's fault the departures were, it's still a great coaching job getting those guys to challenge for the top of the league.

I would look deeper. What happened to the other guys--guys he probably recruited? Where did he get these guys?

Something smells fishy. But I want to see the forensics of the not-so-dearly departed.

Did you read the article? It was this year that Walters formed a fight circle at one of his practices and then had Doolin and another player go at it. Doolin then left the team.



Here in the Bay Area, the chatter is Doolin basically got USF to agree to his transfer to UNLV in exchange for not ratting Walters out about the fight circle and Walters' other antics.



Imagine if Rose or Bronco had a fight circle and forced players to settle disputes with their fists. Would you think they deserved being COY? Or, is coaching just all about wins?

Yes I read the article. Always do. I am not impressed with his style. Others above, indicated that he should not get credit for digging out of a hole he created in prior years for himself. I merely pointed out that a COY award is about digging out of the hole - not who dug the hole. Bobby Knight won some awards. Style points do not seem to count.



This guy could be the next highly acclaimed coach to go up in flames.

It's not like he started a fight club. He saw two guys getting physical and then provided an opportunity for them to hash it out, which 30 seconds later the fight dissolved. It is better to do that if both kids want to fight then do all this petty backstabbing crap that goes on in our very own locker rooms, moving practices to different rooms and different times and not telling other players about it, etc.



I don't think that we should be the fan base that tells other fan bases how to have unified locker rooms and/or coaching staffs, because we clearly don't have that part of the game figured out.

I suspect Walters did what was in this article, but nothing is definite and nothing has been proven. At what point, if at all, do the voters for COY take into account a coaches rumored/suspected behavior?

You do realize it's not 2010 or 2011 anymore and that this is basketball and not football? Or are you thinking that the current 2014 BYU basketball lockerroom is heavily divided and that guys like Eric Mika are being subject to petty games by guys like Sklyer Halford? I don't think anything you said applies in any way shape or form to the current state of BYU athletics.

Needed to clarify: although I defended Walters COY, I hope he loses miserably tonight. I don't like his arrogant attitude and hope coach Rose cleans the floor with him from a coaching standpoint. I'd like to see us play well enough to frustrate Walters into a technical foul and/or Clipboard throwing fest.

The guy is a jerk, but the jerk gets a lot out of a team without any real super stars. Understands that defense and rebounding matters. Needs to partner with Rose to find a FT shooting coach, though.
