Two guys you can count on.

Yes. In closing minutes the only one who should be touching the ball is Haws, Half, and maybe Carlno. Goes back to little league obviousness. Maybe Rse has a case of KC-itis like Bronco did with Riley-itis.....until it really hurt.

If I am an opponent, though, and it's crunch time I double up on Haws. We critique Rose and the team for not getting the ball in Haws' hands assuming he was wide open and MC or whomever purposefully neglected to pass the ball to Haws.

Most of these crunch time FTs are on inbound plays where there is only 5 sec to get the ball in play. Opponents can drop a defender and double up on Haws and you can be sure they have been instructed not to let Haws get open. As a result, that's why we see KC getting the ball a lot in crunch time. He's the only one open.

Now, Rose could and probably should switch KC out in such situations and then sub him back in when we're shooting free throws. Why he doesn't do this, I dint know.

I wish I had the last 5 minutes of every game at my fingertips to check, but, if the USF game is indicative, the fouls in question were not inbounds passes to Collinsworth. They were inexplicable attempts to force offense early in the shot clock by passing aggressively to KC under the basket. BYU should have slowed it down. On at least one of those, BYU did not even wait for Haws to cross midcourt. Haws had passed across the time line to Austin, who could have passed back to Haws or Carlin if he held the ball a second, but, instead he rifled a pass immediately to KC under the basket where he got hammerred.

On an inbounds pass, they could have KC throw it in.

I looked up Gonzaga - the team to beat. One player who has started every game shoots under 50% FT. Another who has played in every game shoots 50% FT. Another of the 8 players getting the most minutes shoots 65% and a 4th shoots 69%. The have 4 guts shooting over 70%.

I don't know and am not invested enough to back and check the recaps.

I don't really mind passing it underneath to KC for a bucket late in the game if the shot is there. Going inside late in the game is where you should go. If you can get a bucket and the foul, you can really open up the lead (assuming the free throws are made). Plus, if I remember correctly, USF had several players with 4 fouls. Get one of those play makers out of the game with the clock ticking isn't a bad thing either.

I think Austin makes the inbound passes, but it could be MC when it's crunch time because MC can pass it in and then that person pass it back to MC. I'll have to pay closer attention.

I have no issue getting it into KC when BYU needs a score. KC and Haws are the two that can create a shot.

But, with a lead, and under 2 minutes left, I have an issue doing it so early in the shot clock - especially when he is sure to get hammered.

Bib, gotta call you out on that research. Gonzaga has 5 players shooting over .800 and 3 players with over 27 minutes a game who are shooting at or over .847. Their 5 players who average the most minutes also average .764 in free throw percentage. THEY HAVE 5 PLAYERS AVERAGING OVER .800 in FT%. Their top 3 minutes per game players are averaging .867!!!!! Those 3 players also have taken 40% of all the FTs attempted by Gonzaga. That's pretty efficient. Now, what BYU should do is foul Przemek Karnowski Every Single Time He Touches The Ball. He truly stinks at FTs.

Compare that to BYU five most played minutes player's FT% = .682 I'd be willing to put bets on which 4 players are on the floor when a team decides it's time to foul to extend and attempt to win a game against gonzaga. And I'd bet that the fifth player doesn't touch the ball unless he throwing it inbounds, OR they just bring in another player who actually shoots FT well in FT situations.

It's no wonder that Gonzaga rules the WCC. They do the little things well. Thanks for pointing this out bib.

Just imagine if we shot 80% from the line. We'd be knocking on 25 wins.

To be fair, Gonzaga starters are only hitting 72.6 if you are looking at their % of all free throws made/attempted. BYU is hitting 69.6 (5 most played players total free throws made/attempted, but a much larger percentage of BYU's points come from the FT line. BYU has attempted 811 fts this season while Gonzaga has attempted 531. BYU shoots 68.8% to the Zags 70.9%. Which tells me that BYU is much better at getting to the line (or teams know that BYU isn't the best FT shooting team and would rather make the cougs earn it). Now if BYU could increase that percentage by even a little, they could get to first place in the country in PPG (currently 3rd).

Sprinkle in some Jackson Emeryesque defense in 2013/2014 and suddenly BYU is a top 5 seed for the upcoming tournament.

To be fair. That sounds like the fair thing to do. You made it sound like Gonzaga is a great free throw shooting team in that first post. They are not. They are better than BYU for sure, but they win in spite of pedestrian FT shooting.

I had a hard time finding individual player stats for Zags. Got them at Fox or someplace. I will double check my facts, but they seem consistent with slightly better than BYU.

Team Ranking site shows Gonzaga at 71% and ranked 130th. Ironically, it says they shot 46% on the road in their last game. It happens.

Yet, you take Karnowski out of the starting 5 and suddenly the other 4 top minutes/game are shooting .835!!! Superb shooters on their starting 5. Without Pangos (Zags best FT shooter who is on the floor the most) gonzaga shoots .681.

Take out BYU's lowest ft% shooter from the starting 5 (KC) and BYU shoots .760 and that is greatly improved only because of Haws. Without haws BYU starting 5 shoots 64%. ATrocious.

bib you are correct. Gonzaga shot 46.1% vs Memphis leaving 7 points at the charity stripe. Guess who missed most of those? You're right, Przemek Karnowski, who was 2-6 and nearly took half their FTs. They lost by 6. I don't expect anyone to go 100%, BUT that game probably turns out differently if Gonzaga make 3-4 or those 7 missed FTs. Unfortunately for the zags, pangos only made it to the line for 2 shots (made both), and sam dower was the only other starter to take a FT (missed it, he's their other center). So their starters were 3-9. Memphis got to the line 27 times and made 18. Difference in the game right there. Memphis could have won that game by 15 easily if they had made FTs.

Take away. Without Karnowski Zags are one of the top teams in the country in FT%. The guy is terrible and I hope BYU exploits that to no end.

Without Tyler Haws, BYU is just awful awful awful at FTs.

Both teams have an outlier.

No, they are a great FT shooting team. They have an outlier who has taken a TON of FTs and the rest of the team, to their credit, has pulled his atrocious and heavy proportion of FTs out of the toilet. BYU on the other hand has one player who has a TON of FTs and who makes nearly 90% (Haws) which has vastly improved BYU's overall FT%. The rest of BYU's TEAM is bad.

Here's the difference.

- Gonzaga is a great FT shooting TEAM.

- BYU has one great FT shooting PLAYER.
C

Not really. There needs to be 5 on the floor. Free throws % is not everything, which is why they did not take their 46% guy out and why BYU does not take Collinsworth out. They are too valuable in spite of poor free throw shooting. Note that their bad FT shooter is even worse than Collinsworth.

For BYU, Haws and Collinsworth take the bulk of the FT shots because they are the BYU offense and they get fouled a ton. Halford is a great FT shooter. But, he did not get minutes until after the first two WCC losses and quite frankly, just does not scare the defense enough to draw many fouls. Zags also seem to have some great % guys that do not get to the line much.

Both teams have some poor FT shooters as well. When it all sorts out, Zags are a little bit better.

You have to be careful about fouling anyone a ton. Pretty soon you get past 1 and 1 for everyone and they all get 2 shots

and

Math

If Zags shoot 50% FG, they get average 1 point per pissession.

If BYU fouls a 50% FT shooter and gets 2 shots, they average 1 point per posession.

So sure foul him hard and prevent an easy bucket on a layup, but fouling every time he touches the ball - not a good idea - unless we are playing from behind in the last 2 minutes.

Given that Gonzaga shoots .408 from 3pt. I bet they average more than 1 point per possession if their FG% is .500.

Yes. They get 1.2 on those possessions. 1.0 on the field goals. Now adjust out steals and turnovers and you get back to 1.0.

Pacific is one of the best free throw shooting teams in the conference and in the country. Over 77% iirc.

ironically, even on the road, BY out shot them from the FT line tonight. BYU shot approx 69.7% and Pacific shot about 65.6%.

And yet, had BYU only missed 1-2 FTs, they would have won or put the game in overtime.
