Is this team dangerous?

And by that I mean are they potent enough to be disruptive in the tourney and catch a team or two off-guard despite a less than excellent regular season?

It has just seemed in the past (especially apparent in the back to back A&M first round games) that this team had a low ceiling and didn't have the talent to make a cinderella run like a few teams do every March--VCU, Butler, George Mason, FGCU, Bucknell, etc.

I never really expect BYU to beat a higher seed because they just haven't had the talent or depth to compete. However, this year feels a little different...

Does anybody else get the sense that this squad can do some tourney damage if we get there?

I don't see this team as being at all dangerous to any team in the top 40-50. Considering if we were to make it to the tournament, we'd be at best a 12 seed, there's no team we could possible play that would have anything to worry about from BYU.

I wouldn't consider this team dangerous based on results against the likes of Utah, LMU, Pepperdine, and Portland. However, if this team were to be invited to The Dance, and depending on the match-up, I could see this team pulling a 1st round surprise based on performance against the likes of Texas, St. Mary's, Wichita St., Iowa St., and Oregon. Go Cougars!

We did beat a top 40 Texas and took several other teams to the limit. We could be dangereous if we could hit FTs. I think we would be a good tourney matchup.

Most definitely. This is the type of low seed team you don't want to play in the tournament if you are a high seed. If BYU starts clicking at the right time, they could put a scare into any team. Haws just needs to be Haws, Carlino would need to play well, Collinsworth just needs to do his all around thing and hit FTs and Mika needs to be solid, not spectacular. The last position, either Halford or Austen, is just icing on the cake (maybe Austin's rebounding is becoming more than just icing for us now). We have potential to upset some very good teams if we play to our potential. I especially like our chances with short turn around times between games for teams to prepare for us.

Yes.

People will point to LMU, Pepperdine, etc. as reasons to why we couldn't be dangerous, completely overlooking our wins against Standford and Texas. Take away the poor clock management against Oregon and that would have been a win too. Had we shot better from the line or Mika not gotten poked in the eye, we would have beaten Iowa State, easily. And the Wichita State game was certainly closer than the 62 to 75 score would let on.

BYU is 3rd in the nation in scoring. 5th in rebounding and 13th in assists. We can score and we can score in bunches.

Should we get to the tourney, we could be dangerous especially if our opponent also thinks we're no good because we lost to LMU and Pepperdine.

Joe Lunardi has be one #1 on his last team in after Mondays games...If we takeout St.Marys and zags I think we are prob good to go..Unless we have another first round exit in Vegas..Yes this team can be very dangerous.

We have far greater odds of stumbling and not dancing at all than we have of winning a game.

But - hey - if a miracle happens and we play near Provo Vs a team that crossed two time zones - maybe we get lucky.

The problem is that the Stanford and Texas games were early and we had an element of surprise. Now there is a ton of film to show a good team how to beat us.

If we beat Zags - very legitimate question and my answer would change to maybe.

Win WCC Tournament - my answer changes to heck yes.

It's one thing to know how to stop us and then to actually do it. The element of surprise will still be there as most teams aren't going to respect BYU, even after watching tape. We don't look fast and flashy or particularly difficult to best, but somehow we score a lot of points on a lot of teams. We usually surprise teams that underestimate us.

We have three guys who have scored 25 or more points in a game this year. And six players who have scored more than 20. We can be dangerous.

Whether we will be dangerous, I don't know. But we certainly have that ability and therefore ARE dangerous.

As a team we've score more than 90 on nine occassions.

We have the ability to give opposing teams fits. But we also have the ability to be very non-dangerous and can be taken out of our game.

Stafford was getting some mention by National experts as recently as 2 weeks ago as being a key win for BYU as their stock was rising. And we did win. And it was a surprise. And it was on the road. True road game. More worthy of note than the other 14.

Bib, I like your passion about BYU athletics and your many, many contributions to this forum. Condescending (even if that is not your intent) comments/corrections on one's comments/opinions such as "You forgot Stanford" aren't solicited nor warranted. For the sake of brevity, I sometimes use certain terms or phrases such as "the likes of" which one could infer in this instance that Stanford is one of those teams even though they weren't specifically mentioned by name. I know, I should have said "...and others." Thanks again for your help

I think Haws typifies our potential to be dangerous. Some team don't get the memo on him and he can just go off. Other teams who know us (Gonzaga) will lock him up all game and force him left and then he's shut down for the most part. But beyond him we have ballers like KC and Mika who, with the right matchups, can be a major mismatch in the tourney.

It was not intended as condescending. It was intended to add support to the point you were trying to make. Sorry you took it that way.

Well, they could have seen Haws - starter, Carlino - starter who became a reserve, , Austin - starter, Sharp - reserve who did not play much early, and Winder - reserve,, but might not have gotten the full picture and the torrid pace of this team early in the season.

Sincerely

Kyle Collinsworth - starter

Skyler Halford - reserve who became a starter

Eric Mika - starter

Frank Bartley, Jr. - reserve who got a lot of minutes early

Luke Worthington - ok. He did not surprise anyone early.
