USF Losses This Year We're On Haws

Wait. We swept USF. I lost track amidst the grumbling.



Nevertheless, USF overachiever vs BYU lately and it is largely on Tyler Haws.



We beat them at their tiny little house. A little close for comfort, but we won. 7 points, iirc.



Haws 31 minutes. Foul trouble. 15 points. Collinsworth stepped up and led the team in scoring. Halford had a big night. We survived. They get under Haws' skin. He gets frustrated. Commits reactionary fouls. Shoots poorly or just quits working hard enough to get open and shoot. They dog him all night. He shot well enough in this game - just not often enough and he did not get the calls to get to the line enough.



We beat them at our enormous and fan-filled house in Provo. Cougs Rule, having looked at data from the previous contest picked KC to be the leading scorer. Haws and KC tied for that honor. I would guess that Cougs Rule does not often pick KC to lead all scorers. Just USF in WCC. They have Haws number. Haws got 19. Did work harder for shots most of the time, but missed shots and free throws. It was contagious. The team lost confidence shooting most of the night. Haws was frustrated. Made some stupid reactionary fouls. Heated up at the end - just enough.



Teams with good defenders are going to try to do this to Haws. Zags will try it. I hope others step up or that Haws heats up enough to win.

Last year, we beat USF by 4 at their place. Haws got his minutes and shots, and scored 22 points, but was slightly off at 45% shooting. Free Throws - 50%. So much for having Haws shoot free throws vs USF. Has he ever shot free throws this poorly vs anyone but USF? They frustrate him.



EDIT: Answer - Gonzaga. Both games last year they had Haws' number. But that 0-9 from the field and 1-2 from the FT line loss takes the prize. This year, Haws was just slightly off on shooting, but got his points. The Zags focused on Carlino and Halford who each went 1-7. Good defensive teams will cause us big problems.



Then USF got red hot in the 2nd half and beat us in Provo. Haws did not get in foul trouble in this one. He was 8-8 FT shooting. The only problem was his 25% field goal shooting for the night en route to 16 points. Not nearly enough. Missed a ton of shots. It was contagious with Davies and Carlino both shooting 33%. Ironically, the only hot hands were Zylstra, Sharp, Cusick, and Kaufusi 2-2. Should have had those guys take more shots.



If we play these guys in the WCC tournament, somebody better step up. CougsRule might predict KC again. He might be right again.

Ya, and little did i know that KC would prefer not to outscore haws and miss his last four FTs.

had him only missing two of four (his normal percentage) and thus outscoring Haws and not just tying him. Sheesh.

But Haws was harrassed all over the place and he just wasnt going to force things until then end when he chipped some in. I think he gets tired of getting through screens with all the pushing,grabbing, pulling, etc. USF does it the most. its why #23 fouled out even though he sat quite a bit in foul trouble. Count on everybody else doubling down on this strategy, now that they see it almost worked for USF--especally SMC, they will be mad dogs.

dont count on me keeping the top spot, Bib. i have been lucky a lot. I expect my percentage to go down on the road. ;-)

It is all mental. You will be alright. Especially given how deep you look into the data. You probably already know the Zags will be doing the same thing.



This week, I am just hoping that UOP cannot do it. We know Zags and Gaels will have some success at it - especially Zags.



We do not have prior year data for UOP. Color me worried even though Haws had a great game in Provo in that win. Problem was Carlino 20%, Collinsworth 22%, and Halford not much better, going 6 of 24 for 25% from the field. Pacific, otoh, shot well in all respects.

The only way this strategy to harass Haws works is if 1) they have good enough defenders to guard Haws and play Man to man on the ret of the team, and 2) our other guys don't step up. Haws, like any player will have good and bad games. If we have other players that can take advantage of the focus being on Haws then we will still have a great shot at winning. If the rest of the team fails when Haws is off then we likely sink as well. I'm amazed at how well haws does on a regular basis when he gets the other teams best shot every night. USF and Gonzaga aren't the only teams trying to hold, push, pull and foul Haws, all teams do it to him, the zags and dons have just been a little more successful with it. Haws has lost hugs cool slightly from time tine this season, but considering all the abuse he takes every night, he has remained remarkably level headed.

I really liked the SCU game where Haws was out for almost the entire 1st half and we dominated with him on the bench. Yes, it was SCU, but Winder stepped up big and SCU didn't know what hit them.



Haws sitting or having a bad game almost throws other teams for a loop because then it becomes an issue of who do the focus on to stop.

One other thought on the tight defense on haws. If the refs are willing to call fouls, haws will get to the line 20+ times a game. This is a recipe for disaster for most teams we pray. Unfortunately, the refs don't typically have the guts to call all the fouls against Haws and that's what teams are gambling on. That's how UNLV used yo best us. They played the tightest, holding, fouling defense possible, until the refs started calling fouls - which more often than not they wouldn't. I remember a couple of games where the refs called everything, but I guess they felt they needed to keep the fouls even so they called fouls on everybody. The game was terrible, no fliw, no rhythm, just free throws.

Data shows that Haws gets fewer calls on the road. The frustration in the SFU and Zags games is that the other Cougs went cold as well.
