Big Implications - UOP Game

Unfortunately, UOP has finally heated up in conference play. They just split a 4 game road trip that started with a 10 point loss in Provo.



I hope HOME COURT does not make a 10 point difference.



UOP lost @BYU and @Pepperdine but whipped LMU and SD iirc.



Anyway they are hot and headed home. They won tonight with a barage of 3 point shots.



I am not liking this matchup as much as I thought I would.



Like the USF game, this one is a must win for BYU.

SF game was a good wakeup call to BYU in how to win when not hitting on all cylinders. They will need similar strategy to sweep the glass and pound inside to help take load off of Haws. The UOP team will be similar to SF and likely will play deliberate half court set, double Haws/play physical. BYU needs to come in with similar intent to match intensity and not back down. Mika, KC and Austin must set the tone.

Absolutely. Must win all games. Committee MIGHT let a loss to the zags slide, but winning out would all but ensure an at large bid.

Good news is couple of the team in the last 4 in and last 4 byes lost last night..So that helps BYU, that's zags game is gonna be major..

There's always someone there to take those spots that won though. Probably teams similar to where BYU is at that are heating up. Answer, of course, for BYU is to just win games.

Pacific was unconscious with the 3 in their last win.



Can BYU shut that down and also regain shooting confidence.

This is one of the great things about basketball. A team will make "everything" from 3 one game and can't buy a bucket the next. It's also why BYU is on thin ice. It would just take one hot team to beat them (not named gonzaga) and their chances of making the dance are reduced to dust.

A quick glance at FT% game by game would make it very clear that Saturday night was an outlier - not typical - not a trend - not the average or expected result.



Whether it was preparation, mental, or physical - IDK, but Haws and BYU were no match for that physical defense that night.



I asked two questions.



Can BYU defend the perimeter vs a hot Pacific team?

Can BYU regain it's shooting confidence by Thursday?

Pacific is a "hot" team? I guess when you're 4-8 in your last 12, going 2-1 in your last 3 constitutes as hot.

I think BYU can regain their shooting touch. One thing that should help is Haws not going 7-20 again.

BYU has won 4 in a row. They are hot. Even if they struggled in one game in their shooting.



For some of you stat geeks - can you tell me the difference in performance between Thursday and Saturday games? It seems like they perform better on Thursdays, and appear to be a little more worn down on Saturdays. This may not bode well for tournament time.

Shooting from Thursday to Saturday games in conference play:

1st Weekend: .444 to .403 FG%; .300 to .091 3P%; .654 to .655 FT% (road)

3rd Weekend: .466 to .509 FG%; .412 to .300 3P%; .742 to .789 FT% (home)

4th Weekend: .472 to .615 FG%; .455 to .636 3P%; .757 to .690 FT% (home)

5th Weekend: .450 to .448 FG%; .375 to .182 3P%, .674 to .714 FT% (road - 3OT game)

6th Weekend: .474 to .491 FG%; .444 to .400 3P%, .722 to .750 FT% (home)

7th Weekend: .450 to .417 FG%; .400 to .286 3P%; .738 to .483 FT% (road)



I don't see a pattern or huge drops.



FG% dropped thrice (one negiligbly) and rose thrice as well.

3P% did drop five of the six weekends though - and the one time it did rise was at home.

No really patter to FT%. One the same (.001 different). Three up, two down.

UOP was red hot last week. BYU was ice cold last Saturday.



That continued tonight.
