Then What?

For quite some time, I have been quite confident that BYU will be 18-9 a week from tonight after wining our next home game against USF and the following road game at Pacific. A bit presumptuous on my part, but I feel it coming.



But THEN WHAT?



There is not a regular season game remaining BYU does not have a shot to win after that. But, there certainly are 2 or more that could easily go the wrong way. Hard to imagine that BYU does not get to 20 or more wins before the WCC Tournament.



Maybe more than 20.



What do you think?



The optimist in me sees a split with Zags and Gaels and wins elsewhere. The pessimist sees Zags and Gaels sweeping us and BYU laying one egg.

The optimist in me has decided to go on sabbatical. Left last night.



Perhaps that gut check win when shots would not drop should give me confidence that BYU will always find a way to beat teams not named SMC or Gonzaga. It did not.



Pacific suddenly looms as a major hurdle instead of as an automatic win.



I also looked at the remaining schedule.



BYU has home games vs Zags and Pilots and roadies vs Pacific, SMC, and SD. Nothing we cannot win. Just 4 games that we might not win. I am still confident about beating Portland in Provo.



SMC has 6 more games. Advantage BYU as we both have 4 losses. The advantage stops there. Zags and Pilots will visit SMC. Call that a wash. But SMC has 4 home games and only 2 road games left. One of those road games is Vs lowly Santa Clara. But, somehow, SCI beat the Gaels in Moraga. We must hang some hope there. Mostly, BYU needs to find a way to beat SMC in Moraga or the Gaels are going to take or tie for 2nd place. Suddenly the battle for 2nd place seems to have more urgency than getting to the dance. Maybe they are co-dependent.



Gaels won by 2 at Pepperdine. Waves are probably out of the race now. But, they could pop back in.



San Francisco is only down 1 and could pop right back in with a win at SMC. Dons are already done with Zags.



Back to Saint Mary's. USF and BYU seem to be the big hurdles for SMC. Maybe SCU.



BYU needs to beat everyone but Zags. Beating Zags would be a nice plus.



Pessimist in me is taking over re the odds of this happening.

AGreed, and I said basically the same thing yesterday evening.



BYU must win out except for Gonzaga to make the dance. And the bestnseed they should expect is a 12 seed.
