How to improve recruiting -

1) Give Geoff Martzen a raise. Given more time in the program I expect things to get even better.

2) Start a bunch of LDS high schools. Seriously. Look at ND recruits. More than 60% attended a Catholic high school. Government schools are at the root of the downfall of society but I didn't realize they are also the cause of mediocre recruiting for BYU. If only we had listened to Brigham Young he'd have a better football team representing him.

I am opposed to free education as much as I am opposed to taking property from one man and giving it to another who knows not how to take care of it... I do not believe in allowing my charities to go through the hands of robbers who pocket nine-tenths themselves and give one tenth to the poor... Would I encourage free schools by taxation? No!

So what you are saying is BYU's recruiting issues are Heber J Grant's fault ;) Since he is the one who closed all the LDS schools.

That and the mobs who drove us from Ohio, Missouri and Illinois.

I'm actually surprised the LDS church hasn't gotten back into the education business. I bet there would be a pretty good demand church-wide for that type of schooling option.

This one will be a problem. At the luncheon, Bronco mentioned that Martzen has his eyes on being an NFL GM someday and that he hopes to keep him as long as he can, but that Preston Hadley should be able to step in if/when Martzen leaves. Then he mentioned that Hadley also wants to be in pro football management.

Recruiting/personnel coordinator looks to be a revolving door for the next little while, but I think that's one position where you can afford it. They simply assess the needs of the program in coordination with the coaches, and then they sift through potential recruits to identify who meets the team's most pressing needs and turn that information over to the coaches who then go out and try to recruit those guys.

Not only is the church not getting into the education business more, they just shut down the LDS high school in Mexico and changed it into an MTC.

The 60% Catholic High School number for ND is a little misleading. They get a lot of their athletes from the midwest. Indiana, Ohio, Michigan etc have almost as many private schools as public schools (many of them Catholic schools). Different sport, but for example, LeBron James went to a Catholic school, but he isn't Catholic. It's just a lot of athletes go to these private schools in the midwest (I believe it's similar in Florida too).

Geoff M should be around for awhile. He's only 24. He needs a few years to see how his analysis worked out on the field. He'll need a track record to show the NFL before he will get his next job. Let's hope he is wildly successful. That would be the good news/bad news.

Also give Martzen a bigger team. I'm sure he could use a few undergrads.

Exactly. There's probably not a town over 8K in Ohio that didn't have a Catholick parochial school. A lot of members that could afford it would send their kids to these parochial schools rather than the public ones. These Catholic schools back in Ohio actually recruit kids to come. LeBron was recruited to St Vincent/St. Marys in Akron.

BYU is a monster drain on tithing. the church seems fine where they are at but not interested in expanding. the pef is more what they are using to emphasize education and help make it possible.

So maybe not in North America, but maybe they would consider it in Ghana? Or at least sponsoring a Pop Warner football team there?

That's right. Heber J Grant and his pansy Riley Nelson arm destroyed the potential for BYU football.

I think students at BYU should have to pay the full cost of attendence. And if they start private schools parents should pay for that too. They do at all the Catholic schools. I think in Southern California (and elsewhere) you could get one elementary school for every stake or two and a high school with 5-6 stakes.

They could compete with Mater Dei and Bishop Amat with just the members and recruit non-members to play football and feed BYU just like Catholic schools feed ND.

I bet LDS schools would have better looking teachers than Catholic nuns.

LDS schools could be very inexpensive. The tuition at the local Catholic High Schools is ~10-12K/yr and that could be significantly reduced to 5-6K/year pretty easily (the non-denom schools are anywhere from 20-30k/yr). If LDS schools could undercut Catholic school prices by that much and be self sufficient they would be an amazing missionary tool.

I'd gladly pay 5-10K for my kids to attend a LDS school. Also, if cost (at BYU)) is the reason there are not more LDS higher education institutions, then students need to start paying more. BYU by far the best bang for buck institution out there, even for non-members.

It's no wonder my parents told me the only place they would help me pay for school was BYU, otherwise, I was totally on my own. (and they didn't for much anyway!!!)

A lot of the Catholic High Schools give scholarships to athletes too.

If BYU went to full cost for students, it would become the size of BYU-I and BYU-H, if not smaller.

Define full cost.

I don't believe its a matter of Byu being in the education business or not. There is BYU-I and BYU-H as well as Southern Virginia. Byu did very well when Byu-Idaho fed us there players.

It's a matter of football being a priority in those schools the church already has. I could see the church doing some HS's but having education only. Letting the kids go to other school's to do sporting events.

On a positive note; Byu is already recruiting NON-LDS kids from religious schools. Really helps those kids feel comfortable with Byu's HC since they already have had strict rules in HS.

Southern Va. isn't owned or operated by the church.
