BYU1971This was probably the most complete game BYU has played in a long time. They started very slow but did not panic and brought it back to a one point deficit at half time. What was most impressive was that they shot 49% from the field while holding St. Mary's to 40%. We also made 75% of our FTs and that is critical.
In the first half St. Mary's was out rebounding us but in the second half they turned it around and ended up with a 38-33 rebound advantage.
Haws continued to do what he has been doing lately and just poured in the mid range jumpers. He rubs off the screens so tightly that he is now getting the holding calls by the officials. I suspect that Dave Rose has made a point of talking to the officials about the physical play on Haws.
Collinsworth had his best game of the season. He was one rebound short of a double-double but more importantly he was able to physically dominate the St. Mary's guards.
I was disappointed that we were not able to foul Waldow out. We went at him a couple of times but then seemed to stop. He would either have to back away or commit his fifth foul.
I know that Rose seems to like bringing Carlino off the bench but he is outplaying Halford right now. Most importantly he is committing very few turnovers.
Winder played well and hit a crucial three pointer. I was surprised by the final shot when we got the offensive rebound and could have dribbled the clock out. Guess he felt like picking up a couple of cheap points. Bartley played OK but he still has a penchant of just putting his head down and driving to the basket.
The guy that was a huge help tonight was Worthington. He ate up a lot of minutes and played some good defense.
Now BYU needs to take care of business against Santa Clara and San Francisco. they should get a win against Pacific and I expect the St. Mary's game on the Gaels home court to be a tough one.
BYU needs to get to the second or third seed to get in the other bracket from Gonzaga. The second seed in the WCC tournament and getting the the finals should get them an invite it they can lose no more than one more in conference play.
