I don't think it says much of anything. Our scoring offense is actually up more than our scoring defense (11 pts vs 10.8 ).

I don't think it says much of anything. Our scoring offense is actually up more than our scoring defense (11 pts vs 10.8 ).

Really? So since our offense has improved more than our defense has regressed we cannot find a problem with where we rank defensively? We are better than everyone in the nation offensively and worse than nearly everyone defensively. I find that a little interesting. I admit that some of that is skewed due to our fast paced offense which naturally allows teams more opportunities to score, but we should be able to do better defensively.

So byu has beat up some bad teams and hasn't won many close ones. That's what this particular +/- stat says to me.

Sorry, I'll take a team that allows 11 points less a game anyday over a team that scores 11 more points a game. This team doesn't know how to play defense. And they play GREAT offense against bad teams that can't keep up.

Didn't say any of that. Didn't imply any of that. We're actually to the top of the offensive ranking than we are to the bottom of the defensive ranking. And I agree that we should be a better defensive team than we are.

I think you have to take the numbers with a grain of salt. Scoring is up, possession time is down because we shoot sooner. More possesions, more points but more possessions for the other team too. So what this shows me is that we have been more productive with the added possessions than our oppenents have. So an overall good thing in my book.

This is related to the point I was trying to make in some other threads.



BYU is 189 in FT Shooting and some have called that horrible. I called it average. Mediocre.



BYU scoring defense is really bad. #337. The pace at which BYU plays contributes to this. Playing away from Provo contributes to this. Playing vs really good teams contributes to this. But, even so, this is bad.



I would guess we are improving. Focusing on D. Playing more games in Provo. Level of competition eased a bit.



Even the pace slowed down a little bit.



But, we are not very good at defense. Bigger problem than FT shooting.



I suspect that we rank pretty low on blocked shots too. We almost always lose this battle.



Pretty average at shooting, 3 point shooting.



We get our share of steals and rebounds - not ekite, though. We usually win the turnover battle.



Many facets to a basketball game. BYU is pretty average at most of them.

BYU allows 18 more points per game on the road than they allow at home.



Part of that is because our opponents, like almost all teams, play better at home.



Part is skewed because all but 2 of our toughest opponents were played away from Provo. SMC and Iowa State are the two toughest home games.

Shooting defense has us ranked 117 - above average. Not elite.



This stat is not skewed by our pace of play.



It is skewed by home vs away. BYU performs much better at home. They hold opponents 4-5% points lower shooting percentage at home. But that is impacted by SOS at home.



BYU ranks #31 in shooting %. Not pace driven. We do shoot nearly 5% better at home. BYU is a good shooting team. Well above average. Not elite.



BYU is 197 in blocked shots. Not far below the median. Pretty average.

BYU is 324th allowing a ton of blocked shots per game.



BYU is 87th in steals. Above average.

BYU is 198th allowing steals. Just worse than median.

BYU is 8th in assists -elite - and 69th - good - in fewest turnovers committed. Our pace of play gets more assists, but racks up more turnovers.



BYU Is 310th giving up a ton of assists and 205th at creating turnovers.



BYU is 40th in offensive boards and 4th in defensive boards. Pace of play helps these stats. But we do OK.



136th and 220th in allowing opponents offensive and defensive rebounds.



BYU is ranked 188 for least fouls committed. Slightly worse than median. Pretty average. Pace of play hurts this stat.
