BYU1971This team continues to be a Jeckyll and Hyde operation. We play well at times and then we seem to fall flat. Everyone sees the basic problems with the team. First is lack of depth in the front court and second is poor free throw shooting.
The major problem with this team is a lack of any scoring from the four spot. Austin gives us some defense and good rebounding but is such an ineffective scorer that teams are ignoring him. He gets way to many passes on the perimeter and never seems to post up. Sharp give you hustle and that is about it. I believe that right now he is the scholarship player to be off scholarship next season.
Had Ayetes been with the team from the beginning of the season he would have been the starter at the four spot and given us a legitimate scoring option down low. He has a big body and the quickness to guard mobile forwards that Austin cannot.
Free throw shooting is simply something that you cannot fathom. Collinsworth has so much potential but his lack of an outside shot and his terrible FT shooting can be a liability late in a game. In the Portland game I thought Rose should have pulled him in favor of a better FT shooter. And his foul with about a minute to go by reaching in was just dumb. But all players make dumb mistakes.
The real engine of this team remains Carlino. He seems to be under much more control since Rose sat him down and is taking better shots. Some of his assist passes are things of beauty. When he scores the team gets in a flow and his defense is alway under appreciated. He just has a great sense of anticipation.
Mika is going through a little bit of a slump. He is a freshman and he has to get used to playing against players that are as big as he is and to play against them every game. Lately he has been drifting outside to get the ball and is not in position to score. He needs to set up in the low post and get the ball in the paint. He can then either make move to the rim or kick it out to an open shooter. He has been playing hurt and I hope he can get heathy quick.
There has been a lot of discussion by BYU fans about Frank Bartley. He is a freshman and is very athletic. At the HS level he was able to use that athleticism to beat lesser players. Early in the season he played teams that were not as good and faired well. But he developed a habit of just lowering his head and driving to the rim. Teams have film now an the know what his habits are and they defend against them. You will see major improvement from him next season. He will benefit from spending a year in the program and the coaching that will take him to the next level competitively.
