Next year's team: 2014-2015

Anybody care to speculate what the team will look like next year?? With Aytes coming on 1 of Worthington, Sharp, or Winder will likely be losing their scholarship. We should let Worthington play football and find someone to take his spot as well. There is some speculation out there that that Mika "could" stay all 4 years which would add to the scohlarship crunch. With Fischer, Chatman, and Aytes being added to the mix it's going to be hard to find as many minutes for Halford, Winder, and Sharp. We also have either Andrus or maybe Dastrup that will play 1 year next year as well........There's going to be some juggling that's going to have to happen in the off-season and it will be interesting to see what happens. I mean what if Mika decides not to go on a mission??

I think Sharp and Winder are NOT going to lose a scholarship. Worthington would most likely be first to go. But that's all speculation. Also, I don't know that Fischer, Aytes and Chatman are going to come in and get starters minutes right away. They might take a while to adjust to D1 level of play.

Winder and Sharp have added great depth this year. Both have stepped up when thrust into starting roles or when we needed good minutes from the bench due to foul trouble.

Aytes and Fischer will likely play.



Chatman has a redshirt year he can use to get back in shape, which he may want to do as he likely wouldn't get many minutes on next year's team between MC, KC, Haws, and Fischer. Throw in Winder and Halford and there are no minutes for Chatman, unless he's astronomically better than Winder or Halford.



Worthington finds himself in a pickle. Sharp may also be in a bit of a bind, though his recent resurgence bodes well for him.



Should Mika decide not to go on a mission, well then Rose is going to have to either let some players go, convince some to take a red shirt or others play without scholarships. I don't envy Rose in this situation, but this is a good problem to have.

Chatman could grey shirt. The transfers should be adjusted to D1 since they have a year of practice with the team and scrimages. Both played at their previous schools.

Assuming that we continue to bring Carlino off the bench here is a stab at a rotation

Halford/Fisher

Haws/WInder/Bartley

Sharp/Aytes

Austin/Nielsen/Worthington

I think either Ryan Andrus or Dastrup will be with the team as well........I'd rather it be Dastrup personally. If Mika stays then Andrus probably goes right out on a mission and maybe Dastrup plays a year with Mika. Personally, I'd think about red-shirting Worthington and/or Bartley and maybe letting Chatman play

Would BYU consider offering JC Big man at SLCC 6'11" Neal Monson?? After having to use Sharp too much and seeing how pathetic he's been I'll be glad when Aytes take his spot. Sharp is a wing with no offense to his game. If you add Monson you could send Andrus directly out on a mission or maybe let Winder move on. I hope Fischer is ready to light it up from 3-pt next because SH is too inconsistent



Side Note: What if Jabari Parker decides to serve a mission?? Can we send all his "future" teammates to the same mission??.........lol

All of our three point shooters will look better due to being more open when we have the 4 and 5 to make opponents defend in the paint.



But back to the OP



irrespective of who starts and who is a back-up and who red-shirts or Grey shirts



The Body Count that can receive a scholie is limited by rule.



Unless some players come up with academic scholarships or depart on missions, somebody or multiple players may have to pay their own tuition or transfer. Some players might be financially able. Some are not. But, irrespective of that, players want to play. Expect some players to transfer or give up basketball as you saw the last year or two.



Now. Let's hit reset on the OP.



Can someone list every single player on the roster today, project which ones leave in 2014 since none will graduate. Hint of the Day: some of these guys may have already had 4 years here or elsewhere counting red-shirts. Two football players in that situation recently got told by BY that a 5th year scholie would not be forthcoming. IDK, but Sharpe or Winder may fall into this category. Also, a BIG that was too much of a project, gave up basketball a year or two ago. Worthington might fall into that category. We do not have any obvious injury guys, but CC and someone else were moved on due to that. Anyway, Rose probably has this kind of stuff mapped out.



Then list the RMS and new recruits and project mission departures, etc., and let's do the math.



Ironically, I think we had unfilled scholarships in past years.



Rose cleaned house last year. It sounds like he may need to finish that work this year.

BYU Roster lists 15 players. I think the Schollie limit is 13.



I am going to guess based on high school data, Pingree is not on scholarship. Either way - he has mission plans in May. Same guess Andrew Johnston. Walk-on.



Sharp red shirted 2008/9 at U. Then he served a Mission. Then - 2011/12, 2012/13, and 2013/14 at BYU. This is his 4th year. Sharp could get the no 5th year memo.



Winder has red-shirted. This is his 4th year as well. He may get the same memo.



Carlino is in this same boat. Partial UCLA/redshirt 2010 with redshirt ending mid season in 2011 at BYU. 2012 is RS Soph. 2013/14 is RS Junior. I doubt that Carlino, based on production, will get the same memo.



Austin is a Jr. But he did not redshirt. This is his 3rd year. Expect him back.



Fischer had 2 years at Wake Forest. Had to sit this year due to transfer. He has not had a shot here. He will be back. Shooting stats at Wake not impressive overall. But limited minutes and vary by season. He shot .600 FT as a frosh but over .800 as a soph. Nice trend. Great 3 point % as a frosh but not so great as a soph. Bad trend. Overall, FG % lower than 3 PT % as a frosh. Not good as a soph either. Not sure what we have here. But I expect him back.



Halford is a junior after 2 years at SLCC and no redshirt. Expect him back.



Haws is a Jr. No redshirt. He will be back.



Worthington is a true freshman. Could improve with time. His HS Football pedigree is actually more impressive than his basketball pedigree. He was also a 4.0 student. He might be an academic scholarship capable student. He was recruited by BYU and Wisconsin in football. Football. Is he Too Tall? Was Too Tall Jones Too Tall for football?

Anybody think Neal Monson from SLCC is a possibility? It's been speculated that Andrus or Dastrup will play a year before the mission anyways

Doubtful Austin gets better. Perhaps Aytes will be the post player we've all dreamed of, but he's still relatively young in his career and consistency will likely be an issue. After Aytes, though, who is there? Once again, we're weak in the post. If Mika sticks around, maybe there will improvement in the back court.



In the mean time, the WCC as a whole will be stronger next season - a good thing - but the conference schedule won't be any easier.

I expect BYU to be an overall worse team next year, the 4th year in a row of declining performance. But 2 or 3 years out dies have some promise.

Although I freely admit deriding Gunk for being so harsh on Bronco while maintaining that Dave Rose had BYU on the rise to new heights post Jimmer, I think the fan sentiment pendulum has swung too far the other way now - including Gunk.



Once you adjust for SOS, which is significant, and home vs away from home, which is not insignificant, this BYU team is as good or better than last season.



I agree that BYU declined post Jimmer as any rational fan would expect and trended down through last year. BYU is climbing slowly back out from the pit starting this season. Slowly.



The schedule, alone, will make the team look better next year.



Even when the LP All Stars all return and blow off the rust, BYU will be better, but, by then fan expectations pendulum will have over corrected in the opposite direction.

I don't know. How many of our players have really improved much over their careers? Davies? Jimmer? NBA guys mostly I guess. Haws should be forced to dribble with his left hand exclusively over the summer and learn how to score going to his left. KC needs to do nothing but re-tool his jump shot over the summer--no dunking, no dating, no swimming. Carlino? It's all mental. I guess he does need to work on squaring up to the basket more.



Don't know much about the incoming guys, but I still say someone should hire Keena Young to teach all of our bigs low post moves. I am absolutely convinced that Pope is not the guy for this job--every team we play against has one or two 6'10" players who at least can score on a baby hook near the basket consistently. None of our bigs can do this. (Mika has regressed and is relying on a weak double move too often). And at the D1 level that is a coaching issue. Even Austin should be able to score down low, but I doubt he's scored more than 20 points all season in the paint.
