The key FAQ is:

How will the teams that are not in the playoff be selected for the other bowls that make up this new arrangement?



All conferences negotiated individual bowl contracts for their champions. Five conferences have arranged contracts for their champions to play in New Year's bowl games -- Atlantic Coast (Orange), Big Ten (Rose), Big 12 (Sugar), Pac-12 (Rose), and Southeastern (Sugar).



The highest ranked champion of the other five Football Bowl Subdivision conferences (the American Athletic, Conference-USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt), as determined by the selection committee, will play in one of the six New Year's bowls. Other available berths will be awarded to the teams ranked highest by the committee. The committee will assign teams to bowls.

The committee ranks teams 1-25. BYU would just have to be the highest ranked team to make a CFP bowl. The committee picks the bowl based on proximity, mathcup, etc. There are six bowls with six conference tie-ins so if BYU finishes in the top 6 they automatically qualify (realistically I think if they are in the top 9-11 they will qualify as I only expect 2-3 of the conference champions not making the top 12). This is a much better situation than the BCS in which BYU had to be top 2 to automatically qualify.

But worst than the top 14 that usually was the case for non-BCS teams.

My chances of winning Powerball are better than filling out a perfect NCAA tournament bracket, but neither one of those scenarios are very likely for me.



BYU has produced only 1 team in the last 25 years that would have likely earned a trip to a major bowl game under the current system. Just like winning the lottery, it is fun to think about, but it is not worth spending alot of time on it.



Our big games will come in the regular season. We have opportunities to play and beat teams like Texas, ND, Wisconsin, USC, Stanford, Nebraska, and Michigan. That is the reality that we live in right now.

the truth hurts.

1983, 1984, 1996, (2001 if they beat Hawaii). Once every 10 years would be a great improvement. I think now 11-1 gets us in when before it was 12-0 or nothing. I'd say the chances are now in the 5% range as opposed to the <1% range.
