QB Preview 2014

We have a starter. He will likely improve further or at least look improved if the OL improves. Once again, ZIP experience at back-up QB.

The only way to get experience at back-up QB is to a) have a QB that played and got replaced by a better player, b) have your QB get hurt, c) have a lower level player transfer to be the back-up.



As long as Olsen is on the team, BYU has c. The other options aren't great.

Backup QB experience is irrelevant. You get the guy who is going to start the VAST majority of the reps. Practice and game reps are too few to waste on a guy who might rarely play.



If something happens that necessitates the backup becoming the starter, then they get the VAST majority of the reps. But barring an injury to the starter (in this case Taysom Hill) or multiple blowout wins, the backup QB will have to live with their situation and make do the best they can.



I actually thought last year was the first time in a long BYU actually got the backup QB live game reps. The next step is to have the actually run the offense and not just come in and hand the ball off. Olsen doesn't have to snap the ball every 14-18 seconds like the 1st team, but he should have the enitre play book open to him to run at a normal pace (snapping every 25-30 seconds).

Rumor is Olsen is transfering to another school for playing time. We will know shortly.

Isn't this a bad time to transfer? Haven't classes already started at most places? If you were going to transfer, wouldn't the time be between semesters so you can be there when the semester starts and are settled by the time spring ball rolls around?



It's not like Taysom wasn't the starter last year and presumed starter the next two years. He wasn't just barely named the starter. Seems like a QB who was looking for PT would/could have made that decision sooner.

Yup official now.



Olsen is transferring to Southern Utah University, which is where the former Alta High quarterback began his college career. SUU football spokesperson Neil Gardner confirmed Tuesday that Olsen has already enrolled at SUU and will participate in spring football for the Thunderbirds.

Olsen came to BYU to play for Gary Crowton and did not realize Gary had left. Crowton just signed on as OC at SUU replacing the guy many wanted to see here in 2013 instead of Anae - Steve Clark. I believe Clark moved to Weber State as OC for 2014. Clark is a rising star and Weber State is his next step.

BYU will only go as far as the efficiency of Taysom's passing game. He met the standard in six games. If he can bump that up to nine, BYU is going to have a great yera.

With Olsen transferring, I wonder if that changes the play calling with Hill. If the coaches were confident in Olsen's ability, they maybe they knew they could take some chances with Hill's running ability that perhaps they won't this year. Perhaps they call a few less designed runs?

If I had enough BYU QB optimism left in me, I would assume that Olsen saw the guts behind him blowing past him and raking his spot.



Whatever happened. It just has not been that long ago that fans felt BYU had an embarrasing treasure trove of QB riches behind Heaps. Lark and Munns were considered busts in 2011 and we had a ton of guys.



Hill was the primary treasure for now with the next primary treasure serving a mission.



The question right now is how much Hill will improve and whether any of the others could contribute in 2014.
