We're Real Lucky to be getting Jake Heaps

"Now, as he prepares for his final high-school game, he is writing the last pages in a storybook career that has seen him lead the Spartans to back-to-back state championships, compiling a 39-2 record in the process. On Saturday he will put on that uniform one last time for the 4A state title game against Ferris, at 7:30 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome.



"My last game is in the state championship," said Heaps, who was named the Gatorade Washington Football Player of the Year on Thursday. "It's an unbelievable feeling." As he prepares for these final four quarters, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior can't help but look back..."

This kid is good. If we don't start him right off the bat we are idiots. He could be a behemoth of a QB come his junior and senior years.

Frankly, I'd love for him to have a year to learn and redshirt but I just don't see that happening. He's too good and we don't have another QB who is primed to take over for Max. It's as much Jake's job as it is Nelson/Lark/Munns and maybe even more so. There have been very few QBs who have ever come out of high school as polished as this kid. Not only is he talented and smart, but he's a natural leader too.

He's phenomenal at the high school level, but that doesn't mean that he's automatically ready to step into a starting role at a top-25 school. It would be great if he could step into the role and be a four-year starter for us, but simply because he's good in high school doesn't qualify him.

I am also excited to see Heaps play. If he is as good as advertised we should have some good years ahead of us.



But, I will believe the hype when he actually plays at BYU.

I'm withya on this one. I'd like to see him take a redshirt then have 4 dominant seasons as a starter. I think starting as a true freshman is just a recipe for an average season (see: USC).

Its mind blowing to think that when Lark and Munns commited everyone talked about them being the cougs future star QB. And now neither of them might not get a chance if Heaps comes in and plays like we all are hoping for. I do think it will be hard for Heaps to beat Nelson out right away. I watched one of Hans Olsens video clips of Nelson in practice. Then I've heard Hans talk about how much the team likes Nelson and is ready to go to battle for him.

"Quarterback Jake Heaps went 40-2 and won three state championships as Skyline High School’s starting quarterback... “My total yardage throwing is 9,994 yards passing and had 144 total touchdowns, with 114 throwing touchdowns with 18 interceptions,” said Heaps. “I had a completion percentage of 63 and also had 30 running touchdowns. I think I ran for around 400 yards rushing.” Jake Heaps just won his third straight 4-A state championship title by beating Ferris High School 45-21. Heaps was 15-of-25 for 254 yards and four touchdowns, and he also rushed for one more.



...During the championship game, Heaps was able to hook up with teammate Kasen Williams three times for touchdowns, setting a title-game record. “[Williams] played great and had eight catches for 86 yards and three touchdowns,” said Heaps. “He had a big-time game and it was kind of fun ending the season like that. We’ve always talked about ending the season like that and going out with a bang.” Williams has a scholarship offer from BYU, among offers from many other schools. “He is one of the most sought-after wide receivers in the country for his grade, and he’s got a lot of people talking to him and I’ve just done my best to support him,” said Heaps. “I really feel that if we are able to get him on campus and allow him to see around what the facilities are like and how the coaches are in person, I really feel like the chances are good and it’s really all about getting him on campus. I know he’ll come visit me and know we’ll have our work cut out for us for sure, but it will be a lot of fun. “I think BYU would be a good fit for him and know Kasen as a person. He adapts really well no matter what the environment is. He’s a great kid and one of those guys that everyone loves to be around. I know the guys [at BYU] would embrace him and he would embrace the guys. It would be a great atmosphere for him and I think he knows that, but I think for him he would have to come see it for himself if it’s the right fit for him.” Getting Williams on campus might happen sooner rather than later. “He’s talked about coming down and visiting me while I’m down there during spring practice,” said Heaps. “We’ll see if that happens and I would love to see him come down and check it out for himself. I would love him to come support his guy during spring practice, but like I said he’ll be one of the more sought-after receivers in the country, so his time is going to be very busy. I know if he did it would be a lot of fun and [he] would have a good time.”



... Heaps and Cougar wide receiver commit Ross Apo are taking their official visits to BYU this weekend... "Me and Ross are going to participate in the Army All-American Bowl game and then the next week I’ll be taking my finals. So I will be down at BYU, I think, around January 16th or 17th. I’m very excited about it and it’s almost here.” Both Heaps and Apo plan on getting to BYU early to also help with the hosting of recruits making official visits to the campus. “That will be a lot of fun and we’ll be able to show these guys around a little bit and tell them more about BYU. I think it will be very valuable to be able to do that.” "

If BYU were able to get Kasan williams, it would be HUGE. I watched the game between Skyline and the team that Joe Montana's son played on and Kasan williams looked like a man among boys. He has a LOT of speed and he gets to top speed very fast.

I agree. Let him sit back and learn for a year or two before we start him. red-shirt first year, then back up second year. starter for three years possibly four if necessary.

I'm tired of people putting Matt Berry down. Before his injury he almost beat USC AT THEIR PLACE I believe the year USC was national champs. I believe that loss AT USC was our only loss up to his injury.He was very good, got injured (freak injury hitting his hand on a helmet and breaking his fingers) and never got back to his pre injury efficiency.



Yes after the injury he was never even close to the same, playing with metal pins in his hand. The Boise State game was his first game after the injury and we found out in that game that he wasn't going to be like before. He didn't finish the game and was lousy while in it. He didn't play much the rest of the season including not at all in the last few games. But the posts on this thread make it seem that he was over hyped coming out of high school and couldn't make it at this level.



By the way, that was the year we lost our #1 quarterback to injury (Berry) and also our #2, #3, and #4 quarterbacks all went down to injury that year and we ended up playing our #5 guy against Utah on a frozen field and lost 3-0. The only time BYU has been shut out in the last gajillion games. That game was the only college game that Jackson Brown ever played in - he had been a walk on at the beginning of the year and like I said was #5 on the depth chart.



This history is all off the top of my head - so correct me if I'm wrong in any of it. But my memories of Matt Berry are all great while he was healthy. And I believe that he waould have been one of our all time best QB's if he hadn't been injured.

I agree with everything you say except that Berry would have been an all time great had he not been injured. Berry did eventually recover and gave Beck a very good run for his money in 2005 for the starting job. They gave it to Beck due to his upside and him being younger. I liked Matt Berry and thought he was handled badly by Crowton.

I guess we'll never know if he would have been one of the all time greats because 1) the injury happened very early in his career - and I don't believe he ever fully recovered and 2) Crowton was the coach. There are many reasons for some players never reaching their full potential. But my point was - when Berry came out of high school these two factors were just bad luck coming for him and BYU in the future and were nothing to do with his value as a recruit. In the beginning (12-0) we all thought Ctowton was a great coach.

I love the upside that Heaps offers. That is what recruiting is all about. Having said that, the reality is that he will not be game ready come the fall of 2010. True freshman QBs just are not ready for the what defenses throw at them. A solid D-1 defense can in no way be compared to a 3-A level high school defense. Matt Barkley at USC was the #1 recruit nationally last year, and he struggled for USC this year. Terrell Pryor struggled for tOSU, and still does at times. Tim Tebow got spot duty as a freshman for Florida. The list goes on and on. I'd rather have him play as a redshirt freshman than as a true freshman. He has the physical tools, but just needs time for the education that goes with being an elite D-1 QB to kick in. Name the last great true freshman QB at BYU? Detmer redshirted. Berry redshirted. Young did not play as a freshman. neither did Wilson. Or Neilsen. McMahon had a redshirt year. Only John Beck started a few games as a true freshman and struggled mightily during a 4-8 season. Heaps will be great, unless we throw him into the fire too soon. He needs a year to sit out. Think otherwise is foolishness.

I guess I should give reasons as to why I didn't think Berry would have been an all time great. It was in my head but I didn't type it. I, frankly, think that Beck would have taken his job regardless.
