How many assists per shot attempt should a PG have?

So honest question here, what do you guys feel is a good assist to shot-attempt ratio for a PG? Now obviously a PG is not going to get an assist every time he brings the ball up the floor and dishes it off, but nor does he shoot every time either, so I'm wondering what you all think would be a good assist to shot attempt ratio for a great PG?

In college, averaging 5 assists is a pretty high number. And taking 15 shots a game is plenty for most players. So I'll say 3:1 is a decent ratio.

If one uses that figure, let's see how those requirements compare to wins and losses for this season.

Too many variables. Depends how well he shoots and how well his teammates shoot and finish - especially inside players.



If the PG is frequently taking shots that are contested, off balance, or our of his normal range or driving into double or triple coverage and turning it over or getting blocked - his personal assists per shot ratio is way too low.

I think a great PG has to have a highly variable shot:Assist ratio from game to game. He has to be able to get a feel for the game early and know if he needs to shoot more or pass more. So many variables from game to game and if a point guard had help settle those I think he is doing his job and the team will be far more successful than simply taking a set number of shots or dishing out a certain number of assists each game.

Agreed, I don't think that there is a good way of determining this. Too many variables. PGs are made to manage the game, hit shots, and distribute. Game to game is going to be very different, even possession to possession is highly variable.

Last night playing basketball I had 5 beautiful driving the lane, no look passes for easy layups.



All layups were missed, and I ended with only a couple assists instead of flirting with double digit assists.



Moral of the story? I think that assist to turnover ratio is a better indicator of point guard success, not shot attempts versus assists. Although the ideal shot attempts number is 0 (other people are getting open and there is no need for the pg to score) I would say "whatever wins us the game." If other players aren't looking to score, than it is a poor pittance to blame the guy with the ball in his hand. Carlino gets a bad rap because of that. It is a problem in BYU basketball that there are large periods of time on the court where no one is looking to actively score the ball. If you watch Carlino, he is nearly always looking for someone to pass to.

It seems that his replacement is doing a better job of finding them.



Players look for the ball when they have an expectation that someone will actually pass it. There have been certain situations where you could take it to the bank that Carlino would not be passing it.

Because, like Jimmer, players become accustomed to standing around waiting for the guy to jack or drive with little to no predictability or pattern. Somebody has to rebound and get back on D.

And some people are lazy or hurt, or both, and know they won't get yelled at if they stand in the corner and watch someone else do all the work. Davies and cusick last year, Haws this year.

common denominator. Same selfish, out of - control point guard both seasons. Different point guard now. Everyone playing team ball now. Do some reading Blue. Local and national analysts have all agreed that the change was needed. Carlino had problems fitting in as he changed high schools in an all about me way orchestrated by his dad. Really. Move a cross country to play for just the right high school. Indiana fell apart for whatever reason. UCLA told him he was not a PG. Teammates did not like him. Starting PG job at BYU handed to him. Lost it. Shooting guard slot given to him. Lost it.



Now he is the back-up PG. Hopefully he learned something.



There is one guy with a blog out there that said Rose screwed up - right before the SD game. At the end he described himself as the self - appointed President of the MC Fan Club.
