Injuries. And an inaccuracy/inefficiency from the QB position.

How many of the permitted bowl practices did we use this year?

8 I believe.

What happened? Not enough pass protection, plus injuries, plus Cahoon leaving.

I see your numbers spiff, but frankly, you are putting way too much blame on Taysom. We saw how accurate he can be when he gets time to throw and guys get open. In fact on the non pass interference call in the Utah game the ball hit the receiver as he was being dragged down. Taysom was not the problem this year, in fact he was the only reason we won 8 games.

As far as the "best receivers in byu history", that is because of 1 guy, we found out that the rest were terribly over rated. Apo is a huge bust, Mitch Matthews, while athletic is very soft. Skyler Ridly (the guy who pro scouts liked because he never dropped balls) dropped some huge passes this year that were right on his hands. I would trade this entire receiving corps with Kaipo McGuire and K.O. Kealaluhi without even flinching (including Hoffman since he can't always do it alone). As far as Cahoon being a difference maker, no one improved under him either. Hoffman improved, the rest did not and frankly I think Hoffman would have improved no matter who was coaching him because he is a special talent.

I seriously don't know what the answer is but this entire offensive team is soft. I thought the point of go fast go hard was to toughen up the offense like the defense but it seemed to make them even softer. Either recruiting needs a major overhaul or we need another coaching change, I guess we will have to wait and see how it plays out.

The QB position must improve. To steal Bib's line, he's the rising tide. He only met the PER standard in six of 13 games. That's not good enough.

Granted, it was an improvement. Only met it four times in 2012, five times in 2011, and four times in 2010. But it still needs to get better.

It will get better in 2014. To steal a line from Chris B - the infamous Troll that is first to comment on nearly every BYU article in D News - WRITE IT DOWN.

Two reasons:

1. SOS overall plus no Utes

2. QB Experience

maybe

3. OL improvement / experience.

4. We find a TE or a FB or a RB who can catch passes.

Caveats: Assuming T Hill stays healthy. Need to overcome WR inexperience.

The biggest reason your caveat is so important is that we almost never saw a back-up get any meaningful reps this year. Two quality QB's gathering splinters and putting all our eggs in the TH basket. Don't get me wrong, I'm a "Hilleiver" ... but how many other D1 programs refuse to give backups meaningful game experience as an insurance policy on their best guy?

I have never agreed with any other CC post and cannot ever imagine agreeing with one more than I agree with this one.

And we repeat this mistake every single season.

Then we watch opponents like Texas a couple of years ago, Utah a couple of years ago, UW last Friday, and others slap in a back - up QB after we or others knock down their starter or make him play poorly and beat us anyway and in cases like USU this year, finish strong with a back - up QB. OSU a couple of years ago. On and on.

And it never seems to register.

Alabama didn't get their backup meaningful reps. They're about to lose their 3 (or is it 4) year starter in AJ McCarron. Their backup threw all of 29 passes this year - 18 of which came against Georgia St in the 5th game of the season. GSU won 0 games this year. Nine of Bama's 13 games were wins by 21 or more points.

He has 39 career attempts.

Backup QBs - RARELY get playing time.

I don't see this as being very relevant either.

They asked why we weren't getting meaningful reps to our backups. I showed that other programs don't get their backup QBs meaningful reps either. So worrying backup QBs getting meaningful reps is irrelevant.

Backup QBs getting game time reps seems to be an artifact of earlier days. I don't see any major program doing so any more

What an opportunity to be different.

But I recall Texas benching a QB that was struggling a bit vs us and beating us with the back- up. The back-up was ready to play. He became the starter. He got injured this year - and they went back to the first guy - who had EXPERIENCE and they won a few riding that horse.

What is more true, is that few teams finish the season without needing to play the back-up at some point, and BYU never seems to have one ready to play.

So what your saying is BYU should be more willing to change QBs if one is inefficient? Texas wasn't just trying to get their backup QB reps when they put him in against us, they were trying to fix their offensive woes.

But if your back up isn't given any real chances to progress, how can they be ready to come in when the starter is inefficient? Maybe it is just a mindset ... at BYU it is: "here is my starter. No other applicants need inquire." At Texas, is it "here is my starter, as long as he performs."?

I'd be happy with the second one. It isn't the rotating QB of BYU past (which was a failure) and it isn't locking onto one guy and ignoring the others, you gotta win the position every week. Isn't that how it is with the other positions?

Of course this likely would have meant Taysom Hill would have been replaced after his disasterous start this year. Maybe that's good, maybe that's bad, I don't know (but I do believe Hill was our best chance to win at QB after the first few games). But I don't know a single top program in the country that is actively trying to get their backup QB game time reps just in case the starter gets injured.

Yes. That. Early this year for example. 2010 early for example. But also reps to avoid injury risk to your starter in games out of reach. Maybe occasional change of pace plays.

Taysom Hill was the only QB on our roster that had a snowballs chance of doing anything behind the disaster we had at offensive line. If we had put someone less mobile back there, he would have been killed.
