8-5 better or worse than last years 8-5?

I kept hearing Wrubell and Co. saying, "This year's 8-5 record, while the same as last year, feels different." Then they would proceed to say it was better than last year due to schedule strength.



I call "BULL" on that. IMO it felt different but worse given the fact that despite a more difficult schedule this year, when looking back at last year we coulda won most those games with Riley at the helm but this year we shoulda won most those games with Taysom at the helm.



I hate when other fans say this but I can't ignore the fact that we beat ourselves last night (and in the other four losses this season--save Wisky maybe) more than we were beat by the opponent. WIth Riley QBing last year I didn't have much hope for pulling out a win. And with his propensity for throwing pick 6's every game I honestly did not think we would/could win every game we played.



With Taysom on the other hand, I felt confident we could and should have won every game this year but somehow found ways to give them away in a variety of ways.



To me, yes the 8-5 this year felt different. Not because the schedule was more difficult but because the opportunities lost were more obvious. I'm still amazed, looking back, at the numbers of rushing yards we put up this year with such a crappy line. But I'm still disappointed more this year than I can remember being in any recent year entering the off-season.

In every loss this year we scored less than 20 points. BYU O should NEVER score less than 20 points. In every loss this year we squandered multiple red zone opportunities and left a ton of points on the field. This game hurts because we looked so good moving the ball on O much of the time but couldn't put the damn ball in the endzone, and gave up easy scores due to poor ST play. This game was there for the taking, and instead the final score looks like a blowout loss. 8-5 this year hurts because there was not a single game on the schedule that was unwinnable, and looking back, we probably SHOULD have won at least 3, maybe 4 of the games that we lost.

Right now, I might be leaning towards last year being better. We didn't lose to a team as atrocious as Virginia last year. And we won our bowl game.

This year was worse because we had a much better running game but no points to show for it. We lack physicality and killer instinct and that just pisses a fan off.

We were a better team this year, which makes it feel worse, because we should be better than 8-5.

This year's team loss to last year's team. Last year's defense would limit this offense to maybe 17 points. And all the the and outs would eventually wear down this defense and they would lose.

But this years' offense is better than last years', so this years' defense would limit last years' offense to maybe 16 points, and the win! :D



Same record vs a better schedule.

Sorta typical Bronco coaching. How many times over the last 7 or 8 years do we end up saying "I feel like our talent is better than our record" vs "I feel like we got all we could out of that season"? Same ol, same ol.

Bonco is second for all-time wins at BYU. He has a better bowl record than LaVell.



Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm not a happy camper this morning. This team SHOULD be better than an 8 - 5 team. LaVell (if memory serves correctly and isn't tainted by years and the luster years seem to put on things), generally got what he could out of a team, and at the end of the year we would feel like it was a pretty good year, the team did well, and about as well as they could have. Not so for this year's team. This team COULD have had a one, or maybe two, loss season. I think Wisky is probably a truly better team than BYU this year ... but it was a close enough game.



The biggest problem for me with the 8 - 5 argument, is this team declined at the end of the year. The team peaked and then trailed off ... last night was just another example of this team lacking the heart to be great.

Last years team would have had a losing record to this years schedule. BYU needs more depth to handle a schedule like we played this year. Injuries killed us. We need more toughness on offense both in coaching and recruiting.

2013 beat GT, USU, BSU, Texas, Houston, MTSU, Nevada, and the other Idaho State.

This team was lucky to beat anyone before MTSU.
