Things to Improve Upon Going Forward

Bronco said it in post-game show:



Need to pass block, catch the ball, and score in blue/red zone. Need to work on this in the off-season so that TH doesn't get worn out. He wants to bring in the very best players that want to protect TH and knock people off the ball. Sounds like focus will be on offense.



He felt poor special teams play changed nature of the game. Basically gave UW great field position to score or allowed them to score. Reminds me of the TCU debacle (a loss) in Cowboys stadium a couple of years ago.

He wants to add more fierceness and edge to special teams play and OL. These two things improve and we win close games. Also have to be opportunistic.



Expectations are high for next year...9 straight bowl games. One immediate goal is for BYU to play in a later bowl game (2015). Most of O returns except for Falslev and Hoffman (big losses). Loss of seniors EM, KVN, SH, UU, Sorenson. All six LBs return, and DBs gain strength with Trammel, Johnson, Lee, Daniel, Sorenson, Povey.



Not sure what plans he has for OL but it will be his primary focus - quite possibly lots of RMs, recruits will add to competition.



One gets the impression that this team didn't live up to his expectations and achieve the success that he thought they could. He understands fan's frustration. It will be an interesting off-season.

Bronco also emphasized the need for depth and to have very talented backups in order to compete with big time programs week after week. Fairly strong admission that we didn't have the horses to step in when the starters went down.

Who will be the next set of oneries (OL) that step up next year? I see improvement with Tayo Fabaluje, DeOndre Wesley, Braydon Kearsley, healthy Ryker Mathews...others, backups?

Correction: what does "all six LBs return" mean? This must e a typo.

And those D losses are not just losses. Those are BIG to HUGE losses. The D takes a Step back next year. The O better step it up. Once again totally inept half of the time!!!

Even with KVN, Ethyn, Unga, Hadley, et al in the front 7 graduating, the loss we might feel the most on D is Sorenson. Dude held a patchwork secondary together all season and made them almost respectable for most of the year. Dude is the best safety we've had since Francisco, deserves to play on Sundays, and will be missed on D and punt coverage. Not sure how we replace him. Luckily we will (hopefully) have better CB next year, knock on wood. But losing Sorenson is going to leave a big, huge gaping hole in the middle of the field.

OL. That's it. Everything else is ancillary. It'll suck not having Hoff, but a solid OL can compensate for having average WR's.



And a near 2nd is TE. BYU teams are only good when we have a legit tight end. Fact. Until we get one I don't believe our team can make any noise.

It was pretty obvious during several parts of the game, but especially after the game watching Bronco leave the field ... he was NOT happy. He was probably just plain mad. And he should be ... but he needs to look in the mirror first. He is developing quite a zen demeanor, but Dude!, this is football, and zen doesn't cut it here. There's got to be fire and emotion!

Improved OL play is absolutely necessary as is TH ability to complete mid to deep passes. He is not a very good passer at this point in his career. UW DBs stacked the line to take away the run and dared him to throw over the top. He never made them pay for their aggressive approach. Anae also has to improve play calling in blue/red zone as this was the teams Achilles heel. If they can't convert points with TDs instead of FGs, they will never be able to win close games. If they can add depth (talent) in critical positions (OL, DL, WRs, TEs), they will be able to impose their will on teams and weather the inevitable problems that come with injured starters. The loss of Reynolds, Alisa, Matthews, Johnson, Lee, Hague and Jorgensen seemed to really decimate the D and O.
