This is the first time since 2004 that I have been glad that the season is over. What a shitty-ass season, and what a pathetic coaching staff. Get thoroughly outcoached by a position coach, fail to make the right calls again and again and again. Use 1/3 of your allotted bowl practices. Fail to make any in-game adjustments. Go for it at your own 20 but not on 4th and 3 at the 50 down 12 in the 4th. Red zone scoring is absolutely pathetic...no, that's not a strong enough word for it. I can't think of a word strong enough. No, wait, it's absolutely bitchy-ass. Totally unacceptable.

I've been a Bronco supporter all along, but I've had it. Start acting like you want to win some #(*)@&ing football games! I've sick of choking in big games. I'm sick of losing to the bitch-ass :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: :utard: I'm sick of caring more about winning fball games than the damn coach!

I'm sick of wasting some of the best players we've ever had here. Our best WR and LB in history never have a legit good year, never beat the yewts, lose most big-time games. The best D we've had in decades, maybe ever (2012) is wasted when the O sucks beyond words and the coaching staff refuses to bench a QB with a noodle arm and a broken back.

I'm sick of sucky-ass coaching failure to create effective game plans, failure to develop players, failure to make appropriate in-game adjustments, consistently getting outcoached again and again and again.

Now that this abortion of a fball season is finally over, we can get back to watching the bball team choke away every big game like they have been doing almost non-stop for the past 30 years.

And like a dog to its vomit, I'll be back next fall, convinced we are going to go undefeated, convinced that Chief Anae will have managed to remove his head from his ass , convinced that Bronco will increase fball priority to #4. Guess I'm a sucker. See you next fall.

We only used 1/3 of our practices? Well, it showed.

For all his talk of execution, how does Bronco expect such when he doesn't practice? This is my biggest beef with Bronco. Practice makes perfect.

If BYU had had an offensive line that could hold a block for longer than half a second or more than 1 competent wide reciever, the amount of pre bowl game practice wouldn't have mattered much. The issues on this team may not be immediately fixable, I don't know who we have in the wings for our Oline and at reciever that will add toughness to this offense. I hate to keep harping on this but seriously go to byutvsports.com and watch the Cottonbowl from 97 and tell me you don't see a physical difference in the way our recievers approached the game. It is so contrasting it makes me sick to see how soft we are at reciever. We will never beat utah or any other physical defense with the marshmellows we have on reciever. Guys aren't going to get open trying to avoid contact.

We had cahoon (95-97) as coach last year, and I think he did wonders with the receivers. Anae came in and booted him for johnson and I haven't seen a single wr improve from last year to this year, or even from the beginning of the season to now.

Y4, I know you are totally and understandably ticked, but I'm still chuckling from your post.   not laughing at you in a patronizing way, more like empathetic. I get it. Bt what's more is that The mods haven't shut it down. Good for you guys.

We need an Oline badly. I really think our D takes another step backward next year. If our O doesn't step up, it will be a hard season next year.

Last year we had only 1 scholorship worthy reciever too. Go watch some games from 96 and ask yourself what you see. Cahoon was not coaching toughness either. Our recievers have been soft since at least 06.

BYU got beat by a better team. I do, however, have a curiosity about which coach prepared the kick - off and Punt units. They were not ready and took BYU right out of the game.

Announcers nailed one offensive issue. BYU does not have a deep threat WR to keep defenses honest.

BYU also does not have a RB that can catch a pass.

BYU either does not have a tight end or does not know where he is - irony is that Friel gets some NFL mention.

OL is still not where it needs to be.

Defense is decent - but not dominant.

Y4, re: next season's homerism. Take my approach this time around. Make your predictions now based on Bronco's tenure. It'll prevent any kool-aid from poisoning your mind come next summer.

BYU will start 2014 1-2: this should be your default assumption. After that we'll lose to UCF so it's at least a 3 loss year. With the rest of that soft schedule we shouldn't lose a game, but I think we'll drop one to either BSU or Cal as well. One less loss than this year = success (assuming we win whatever patsy bowl we play in)!

I disagree that UW is a better team ... although they were last night. The Cougs played poorly.

Kelly Poppinga is the Kick-off team coach. I don't know who is the punt coach. You are right ... they weren't ready.

About practices. Teams are allowed 15 pre-bowl practices. BYU used 6 - 8 of them (IIRC). Bronco has used this bowl "formula" for several years and had success the last four times. Bronco has stated that he wants the guys to heal up, get back in the weight room, and then they will decide how they want to perform in the bowl. Especially this year, that is a mistake, The team is on a decline, they don't have the heart and spine to step up ... they need a coach who (to paraphrase Elder Holland) uses just enough fire to singe the eyebrows and get them ready. This is, and has been, my biggest complaint about Bronco, he hasn't figured out how to use emotion and motivation and get the team ready for the big games (i.e. Utah, and the other 4 losses this year). Y4 is justified in his anger.

Y4 is over-reacting.

And

How much evidence do you need to realize that an objective person would agree that UW had a better team this season.

I did not see any odds makers picking BYU. None.

I saw ESPN flash their polls showing an 8 point BYU loss all day pre - game

Yes, they lost 4 games to ranked teams mostly on the road: @Stanford by 3, Oregon at home, @ASU, and @UCLA.

They mauled BSU before BSU lost their QB. They beat Idaho State 56-0. Beat Illinois on the road. Beat Oregon State, Washington State, CAL, Arizona, Colorado, and BYU.

They score 35 PG vs those teams.

Offense

Keith Price - Senior - 3 year starter vs PAC 12 competition week after week vs Sophomore T Hill - Edge UW

Bishop Sankey - NFL Bound for sure - Vs Sophomore JW - who is not a threat to catch a pass - Edge UW

A S-J NFL Bound TE for sure - Vs K Friel who dreams of the NFL - Edge UW

Cadre of decent WRs Vs Hoffman, Falslev, and Ridley - wash at best for BYU

Solid OL vs Patchwork OL - Edge UW

Decent backup QB vs nada - Edge UW

Decent backup RB vs inexperience - wash at best for BYU

Special Teams

BYU has a decent kicker and inconsistent punter. BYU has Falslev who has had his hands tied on punt returns since getting fumbleitis. Hine is a solid, but unspectacular returner vs teams with Speed. BYU lacks overall speed on coverage teams. Ie - not much special about BYU Special Teams.

UW - IDK. Certainly, no worse than BYU.

Defense

UW led by Hauoli Jamora who changed his last name after dumping BYU for UW 4 or 5 years ago. Beast of a Nose Tackle vs Decent BYU DO that lacks depth. Wash at best for BYU.

Solid UW linebacking Corp vs KVN, UU, and an otherwise depleted unit - wash at best for BYU

Safeties - possibly a wash

CB - rock solid vs depleted BYU unit - Edge BYU

That bout sums up why odds makers picked UW. Add in the fact that this game was in their time zone.

BYU was out manned nearly across the board.

I'm with Bib. UW was easily the better team on the field. And sadly it looked like on the sidelines as well.

More talented players played better for an interim coach in his first ever game who was out of a job when the plane landed this morning and who didn't even have a full compliment of assistants. Basically a bunch of graduate assistants took BYU to the woodshed in the 2nd half.

Sadly, I can't disagree with most of this. BUT, while stating that UW was the better team on the field, remember, BYU had more yards, more time of possession, more 1st downs (iirc) ... BYU won the statistics. BYU held Sankey to less than 100 yards (JW had nearly the same number of yards and TH had more!)

If BYU offense could score touchdowns in the blue zone (and if they don't we'll have to resort to calling it the red zone) instead of field goals, BYU wins the bowl game. 1 TD, 3 FG. Whatever the other weaknesses were for BYU (or strengths for UW), change the outcome on those three drives alone and BYU wins.

UW did what they needed to to win. They won the game, they were the better team (especially in the 3rd quarter) in that bowl game.

I said he was justified, not that he was right. Fans are justified for being VERY angry with the poor preparation/performance in the bowl game.

Beating BSU, early in the season at Husky Stadium (iirc, it was the grand re-opening of their new stadium, and the fans and stadium are (perhaps) a better 12th man than the Seahawks enjoy), was not terribly surprising. Sorry. Beating Idaho State 56-0 isn't any great feat either ... and UW did not pull their horses as early as BYU did against ISU. Yes, they have some quality wins ... so does BYU.

BYU and UW should have been a good match-up. Play them 10 times, it could be 5-5, maybe 6-4 either way. I'm not going to go position by position, but I agree with some of your analysis and disagree with some (I'd pick TH over Price and give edge to BYU, for example). Probably the single biggest factor in favor of UW ... BYU's O-line. They lost the war. And maybe, on that factor alone, you would be right and UW be the better team. I don't know. But I still like my blue goggles.

BYU won the statistics based on the 2nd quarter. BYU only played one good quarter. Yards by quarter:

1st: UW 108 BYU 69

2nd: BYU 246 UW 34

3rd: UW 112 BYU 54

4th: BYU 122 UW 62

Sadly, that 2nd quarter might have been good enough - had BYU scored TDs instead of FGs. They could have gone into the locker room up 28-21 instead of down 21-16.
C
Cougarbib
And they would have scored TDs if they had the OL - TE - and one more WR to do it.

And they would have if Smash had not taken away 15 yards after the INT.

They were better in the Zone, because they have a senior QB that passes better than Hill, an NFL RB, an NFL TE, and a solid OL. That is why they scored 35 points all year vs a tougher schedule and we did not. They are simply better.
J

I expected to lose but when i saw our defense playing the way it did and saw taysom playing better I realized we had a shot. The special teams literally killed us and that is on Bronco for not taking the game more seriously and practicing more. I blame this loss on the coaches.

Red zone offense and special teams lost us that game. the defense was GREAT if you look at what UW usually does. Our offensive line seemed to be getting push on run plays. they were horrible in pass protection as usual. taysom had some amazing throws and understood he was going to have to run a lot if we wanted to win. In the end that game was winnable with better coaches in my opinion.

Bronco is amazing defensively. he just isn't a great head coach. he needs to be more involved in offense and special teams, holding those coaches accountable.

I like your point. Bronco is a great coach ... and he may be too much hands-off with elements. Maybe that was the goal of him giving up the practice DC stuff ... put him in a better position to influence every part of the team. I don't know. It stands in my mind that everytime he has taken one aspect of the team over, that element improves. That alone suggests to me that his intensity and leadership are tangible assets. That needs to be felt by the whole team ... especially the O-line and OC right now (IMO).

Your last point is right on. whatever he touches with his attention turns to gold. He is a good coach. the problem is he does not have assistants that can do this. he has not done a good enough job as a head coach in hiring assistants.
