Bench Carlino for a while (everyone else too)

I enjoyed this game for the first 35 minutes for a lot of reasons, but especially because MC was letting the game come to him and he was making smart plays and being a PG first, shooter second. Then he hit that 3, which was probably the worst thing that could've happened to the team. His insistence on imitating Jimmer has got to end now.

MC just doesn't seem to understand bball yet. He's a chucker who's 50/50 on making the right play.

Start Halford. I like his game and think he knows his place better than MC knows his. He's better off the dribble too.

It's time for Matt to sit and learn from Halford and/or Winder what it means to be a team player.

Seconded.

Carlino is a head scratcher that's for sure. Up 2 with a minute to go and take it the length of the floor and force it up over a guy who has 8 inches on you in a matter of 7 seconds is flat out maddening to watch as a fan. Like you said Mizzou, for 38 minutes he was having probably his best game of the year. Flat out maddening I say, but not ready to bench him yet.

Not even close to his best game of THe year even for 38. Maybe his least hurtful for 38. Theres a huge difference.

Fair enough.

If MC can complete the transition from his jack (pun intended) of all offense mentality to drive, draw the D and dish, and then only shoot when he has a good, open shot, this team will excel. If however, he keeps jacking up shots from wherever, whenever, BYu will give away the few remaining opportunities to boost a big dance resume. His steals and rebounds are solid. Just needs to realize he's a PG to a shooting guard. I think that experiment failed except KC makes overall better decisions.

Carlino - Trigger happy, bad decisions, streaky, great handles, decent 3 point shooter and mid range shooter when he gets his feet set.

KC- average handles, less than average decision maker, no outside shot, terrible at the FT line.

MC is just a couple of mental changes away from being absolutely brilliant.

I am not a fan of benching him. I do think he needs to be on a very short leash and some clear guidance in place.

Halford is legit, but he's a bit small and as high as everyone is on him he too has a habit of charging into the key with no plan. Defenses haven't keyed up on him and lets not forget he wasn't particularly consistent from behind the arc either at the beginning of the season.

MC's ceiling is greater and if we want any chance of completing at a national level he has to get going and play to his potential.

I get we're frustrated with him, I am too, but the knee jerk reaction is often the wrong one. Play Carlino, but shorten that leash even more. We can't afford reckless play on his part. We also can't afford not to have him on the court.

Any benching would have to be done not out of spite, but in order to give Carlino a chance to learn the few things that he is missing that is keeping him from being brilliant. Some times a kid who has a lot of physical talent needs to sit on the bench and watch a player with less physical talent, but more knowledge of how to play the game so that he can learn that side.

I don't know if at this point benching Carlino would help him pick up those last few things he needs to keep from costing BYU big games or not. If Rose thinks it would, I'd support it.

That NIT run last year might have been a detriment to Carlino's overall development. Prior to the NIT, the rumblings were that Rose was grating on Carlino with how he was trying to rein him in, and Carlino was not going to return for 2013-14. Then Rose just lets the guys play in the NIT, and Carlino goes hogwild and redeems himself for the fans, and Rose lost a bit of leverage. I think we are seeing that same dynamic play out all over again this year. Carlino now is thinking "hey, it worked last season, so I know what I'm doing and coach was wrong then, so he's probably wrong again."

I don't know how well Carlino would respond to a benching, given that he was nearly out the door last season without one.

How true are those rumors. I thought that was just speculation.

Here's a fact, his field goal percentage on the year is under 38%. Shoot that low you should not be taking 15+ shots a game.

What is MC's plan when going into the paint? Does he ever pass off a drive? Nope. MC's ceiling is no greater. We have seen his game for a while now and he's capable of getting streaky, but that's not the same thing as saying he may become great one day. It's just not gonna happen. And this is hardly knee jerk. We've been watching Matt for a couple years now and know what we are getting. For our starting PG to finish games with few and sometimes no assists is embarrassing and one of the main reasons we can't close our good teams.
C
Cougs_Rule
He does and he has driven and dished. Remember when he had nine assists? He looked great in that game, except for the nine turnovers?

And as for streaky, that usually applies to a shooter, right? He hasn't been on as a shooter since when, game 5??

That kid is messed up. I hope he figures things out. Cause I'm sure that yet another transfer ain't gonna work that good. Maybe he should ask Bib? ;-)

Well - since you asked,

Rose has an impending scholarship issue that he said he will resolve this Spring. He needs to make sure Carlino knows who is coaching this team this season as he prepares to make decisions about next season.

By my calculation, Matt is already a red - shirt Junior with 1 year left to play 1. If he graduates this year, there may be an option as in football to transfer without sitting. There are also a million lower division schools. Matt Carlino is not indispensable if he does not want to recognize that basketball is a team sport.

I have seen nothing indicating he will be a solid NBA player. If I were MC, I would be asking my coach how I can improve and better help this team.

He dumped Indiana at the last minute for UCLA. Teammates did not accept him at UCLA. UCLA did fine without him after he transferred to BYU.

Carlino is a 4th year player playing like a 2nd year player. Time to grow up quickly.

Rose has already been benching him as of late. Taking away not only PG minutes, but total minutes. If KC could shoot free throws, he would be PG long ago.

As is typical, BYU does not have a true PG.

Rose is sending the message to Matt. It is now up to Matt to decide what to do about that message.

I worry about his confidence at this point.

Matt would be nuts to transfer - he already has a reputation. But, if he thinks jacking up 3 and wild layups will get him in the league - yeah - do it at Montana State.

This is how I would handle Carlino. Start at PG. Have him take his shots (3's) early (first 5 minutes). At least 4 or 5. Then in the second five minutes cut back to about two or three and then no more three's until the start of the second half within the first two or three minutes. After that only pullups from around the free throw line and fast break drives to the rim. I think if anyone breaks down his efficiency he is the exact opposite of Haws who usually starts slow and then carries the team down the stretch. Carlino starts fast and fades. He starts taking his threes further back and not exactly square to the basket. He starts forcing drives and just throws the ball up. Also, after the first 10 minutes, Carlino starts to force passes so turn it over to KC to run the offense. Carlino is a great player but he gets tired and his 3's start doinking off the front of the rim. And then he starts really forcing things and tries to do too much.

The main problem I see with this team (besides way too much zone defense) is they don't work enough plays to Carlino early and Haws throughout the game. I do like how they have used Mika but Haws is your bread and butter and seems to not get many touches until he takes over.

Oh, and only inbound the ball to Hawes, Carlino, or Halford in the last 1:30 and leading. KC please go stand by the opponent's basket.
B
Brayden Green
Haws (besides the Oregon game) has contented himself to be a non-factor in the first half, only to come out swinging in the 2nd half when we are normally down by 7 points. I don't know if he isn't fully healthy, or isn't being held accountable, but he isn't in there to rebound or play defense (both of which he can't do at all). He is in there to score. If he isn't being aggressive and looking to score he is a wasted starting spot.

The team has talent, but there are some dynamic issues between the players. Haws should get the ball more, Mika should get the ball a little less, KC needs to hit free throws and take care of the ball, and MC needs to realize that scoring the ball is not all on him like it was last year and the year before.

The team has gotten better from last year, that much is clear. They are moving around and actually have some semblance of a half court offense. Their defense is still suspect, but what do you expect when you have Haws and KColl as your wing players (they aren't exactly speedsters on defense).

We also need one more backup forward, and Josh Sharp just isn't that guy. It is very clear that he didn't do any lifting in the offseason (either to become bulkier, or just defined - depending on his body type). That really hurts us, to not have a backup forward option. Aytes would have been amazing for us this year.

Agree Blue. We have talent, but none of it is complete. We also lack legit depth.

MC = is not consistent and plays selfishly

TH = can only shoot. That's it.

Mika = too many dumb fouls--he has Davies-itis.

KC = can do everything BUT shoot (as we all know, this is not an exaggeration. Literally, everyone of us on this forum could outshoot him in FT's, in horse, in the pool, etc.)

NA = N/A

Doubt it. A little tougher to hit with a few thousand fans trying to distract you and attack your self confidence. He is a poor FT shooter for sure. Just not sure everyone of us could step right up there and do better. Not sure we could take any MWC Team and shut down Anae either. Silly, really.

But I agree that if KC can somehow learn to shoot better - he will be a star in WCC play.

KC needs a 12 footer and couple of back to the basket moves and he'd be an all-conference player.
