What's up with Haws' first half this season?

I've watched every game we play this year, and I have noticed that Tyler hasn't been aggressive in the first half of most of the games we have played. I know he was injured, so I'm not trying to bag on him, I'm just wondering why he seems so disinterested in the game until the second half.



He is in there to score. He is the reason that we don't play man, and his zone isn't great either, and he doesn't rebound at all. If he isn't looking for shots, and looking to score, than Bartley is a better option, because with Bartley in we can play man instead of this ridiculous zone.



I'm not saying that Bartley should start over Haws, that would be crazy. But I wonder why the offense doesn't play through Haws, and why he isn't shooting the ball? Against Utah he only had something like 3 attempts in the first half. And he looked to be standing around in the corner a lot.

He got shut down quite a bit towards the end of last year during conference play. Teams learned to grab, hook, pull, slap haws and to not give him enough space to establish his shot. He handled this well sometimes, poorly during other games. This year he's the focus of every team, and they have a pretty good template.

So, not moving is the solution to that? (not attacking you, just asking...)



I thought at first it was because he wasn't feeling well, and he was conserving himself. But wouldn't Bartley starting with Haws coming off the bench a la Ginobili be better if he can only give 15 minutes of effort?



He should be our number one scorer every night, and should take umbridge to not being the #1 scorer anytime he is on the floor. He basically is Cusick, except they would leave Cusick wide open for the 3, and they don't leave Tyler.

Haws is still one of the most active guys on the team. Your point is well taken, he does seem to have stopped moving without the ball as well. Could be a combo of things



1. BYU has no offense, Haws doesn't know where to go to get an open look.

2. He's frustrated that everytime he moves he's getting hammered

3. Not as many sets this year designed specifically for haws??

I think that your #3 is a big part of it. It is clear that Rose wants to go low to Mika in the half court offense, and Haws doesn't think that he needs to move around and get open, apparently. I haven't seen much from him this season that I am impressed with.

Haws is a role player trying to carry a team with no stars. This team has no stars this year and is going to struggle when teams shut haws down and so far every team we have played with a pulse has done it pretty effectively, especially since Carlino has completely disapeared offensively.

Going low frees Haws up. And since you aren't going to get a full game out if Mika I can see why they'd focus on going low early.



Two things I see with Haws:

1) He does seem to play with less intensity in the first half. In the 2nd there more effort especially if the game is close and he's angry.

2) He's the only guy a team has to key up on. MC is so inconsistent there is no need to double. Mika is new and raw and gets in foul trouble.



As a spot up shooter, it's hard to build an offense around Haws. It's like when Rose tried to center the offense around Lee Cummard. Defenses just have to keep him from getting the ball and slow him down.



Inside out, drive and dish is what this team needs to focus on when in a half court set.
