Jimmer Trade Rumors

I try and follow the Jimmer Fredette trade - rumor mill closely. Over the past few months a number of teams have popped up on the radar, then disappeared. I've read that the Jazz, Bulls, Pacers, Nuggets, Cavaliers, Celtics, and Raptors have shown interest at some point. The Jazz then came out and definitively said "we are not interested in trading for Jimmer Fredette."

The latest is the Toronto Raptors. I really hope not. Might as well send him to Europe. Based on nothing but gut instinct, I do think the time for Jimmer to be traded is getting close. I would hope Jimmer could go to a team that has a system that allows him to show his skills.

Anyway - the latest -

I don't know that the Raptors and Kings will make back-to-back trades after they just wrapped up the Rudy Gay trade. Seems that if they really wanted Jimmer and if the Kings really wanted to move him, they would have done it in the last dustup.

I hope you're right. I think trading Jimmer to the Raptor's would be disastrous - for Jimmer. I would love to see him go to the Bulls, or Denver.

Jimmer to the Spurs, I am hoping.

My Spurs need some scoring off the bench with Manu getting up there in years, and Neal signing for his large contract. Patty Mills is good, but I think that Jimmer would be better, and he'd work great in San Antonio.

Honestly, the more this drags out and the less interested other teams look in Jimmer the more I begin to fear that Jimmer ends his career as a King.

Agreed. If I had to bet, Jimmer won't be traded this season and will find himself looking for a spot on a roster during the off season.

Upshot is that Jimmer has been tremendously frugal post-BYU, and will not be hurting for funds and will be well set in the event hoops doesn't work out beyond the next couple of years.

I don't think it is that teams aren't interested in Jimmer, I think that they are not willing to give what Sacramento is asking, when they can wait 5 more months and get him for free.

Same thing with Millsap and JEfferson last year. Why send your picks to a team when you can just sign him for 1 year / 900 k in the offseason?

He would be signed to bolster the depth chart, and provide a spark off the bench, and that isn't worth giving up draft picks for unless you need to. Closer to the playoffs teams will know if they have that need and what they would be willing to give up for it.

Sending Jimmer to a playoff team that wants and needs him would be the best thing that could possibly happen for Jimmer.

Jimmer could play a decade in Europe and make $20 mil... he doesn't have to worry about cash, just where he's going to live and play hoops.

Barring injury, lockouts, etc, etc, etc. Jimmer has been very smart with his money, and he won't need to play in Europe if he doesn't want to as he'll have nearly all his NBA money even at the end of this contract. He's essentially living on less than what he makes in endorsements alone.

Yeah, but then he'd have to pay 80% of that in taxes. :bug:

Pretty sure USA is right there with most European countries as far as taxes are concerned.

But in addition to that, iiuc, if a US Citizen is getting paid income in a foreign country, he or she will pay tax in that country and tax on what remains, in the US. I.e. double taxation of sorts.

No there are tax treaties, so you get a credit for foreign tax paid. However I am not a Tax Accountant.

No, Bib is right. The US taxes monies made in other countries, even if that gaining of money is done completely with foreign dollars. They are the only country in the world that does that.

That is why we have an unprecedented rise in ex-pats over the last decade. The rest of the world is catching up with the USA, and in stead of competing and making america better, our government has decided to double penalize those that look for better opportunities.

Nothing in your link shows that the US taxes income earned abroad. The link talks about those with more than $2M in assets getting taxed when they become expats.

Found this on the IRS site. But I'm not a tax expert, accountant, or lawyer.

Foreign Earned Income Exclusion

If you meet certain requirements, you may qualify for the foreign earned income and foreign housing exclusions and the foreign housing deduction.

If you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien of the United States and you live abroad, you are taxed on your worldwide income. However, you may qualify to exclude from income up to an amount of your foreign earnings that is adjusted annually for inflation ($91,500 for 2010, $92,900 for 2011, $95,100 for 2012, and $97,600 for 2013). In addition, you can exclude or deduct certain foreign housing amounts.

Right, the US taxes what is left after letting you claim $92,000 of "exemptions". Not only that, but the IRS is a pain in the A## for foreign bank account holders, and many other things, but that is besides the point.

So, if Jimmer signed a contract at 3 years 12 million dollars, then supposing he got 4 million a year he would get to exclude $97,000 of that (YAY!) but would then be taxed at something close to 45% depending on what country he resided in, and then get to turn around and pay another 45% to the USA (minus $97,000 and minus the taxes he paid there). All while living in another nation, making money there, and potentially not even coming back to the US during the year he paid those taxes to the USA.

That is the way I understand it, but I could be wrong.
