I have a question for the group (Poll and Discuss)

I have been wondering this season just why we can be such A-holes to each other sometimes (I'm not excusing myself, I'm including myself. I can bring the heat too), and I think that it goes back to the old "internet anonymity" paradigm.



I have been wanting for the last year or so to change my screen name to my real name, but I have been hesitant to do so. I am wondering: We already have such a cool community here, would it make it better if most of us (those that wanted to) used our real names, and didn't have a keyboard and monitor to hide behind?



Starting the new year, I am going to request my name change to Hawk (as well as a new year's resolution to not be as antagonistic as I can sometimes be), and I am wondering if there is any interest out there in doing the same?



Also, sorry to Schmoe and some of the rest that I have been less than kind to. I know that the jests are fun and games, and it is fun to have adrenaline pumping through your system in an internet fued, but at the end of the day that isn't who I want to be, or who I want to associate with. I consider most on this board my friends, and I am interested in extending the good things of this board further, and trying to help detract (at least in my part) with the bad things.

I harbor no ill will toward anyone on the board. At the end of the day, we're all just dudes discussing sports and it's easy to get worked up over stuff that doesn't matter. And yeah, I'm a dick.

Back to OP.



I think it's a great idea in theory and I would absolutely be ok with going by my real name with 95% of the people on the board, but with all the ... let's call them non-friends" that come on the board, I think it's probably best to maintain some anonymity. Perhaps someone cleverer than I am could figure out a way to get a similar result without opening ourselves up to other problems.

How about we don't only add our names but home addresses and SS#'s?



Honestly, I am fine using names as long as it is not an open forum for anyone off the street.

Some people on this site already do use their real names.



Others have gotten together at the numerous CougarCorner activities that we've hosted and gotten to know each other in real life, essentially putting a name with the avatar. Those that have been willing to step out of their comfort zone and do so have found the site to be far more rewarding.

That is what I am thinking. If we think of each other as people (like CraigOscarson) then maybe that will stop us from pushing "submit" once in a while, and have a better dialogue.

I officially changed my name to jvquarterback and became a nicer guy in the same moment. I suggest everyone legally change their name to their cc handle and all our problems will be solved.



In some ways though, you would get less information from posts. people are less apt to make real criticisms because they fear reprisal. With good reason. What would have happened if all of the founding father's had to publish under their real names from the beginning? I'll tell you one thing - you wouldn't have had much criticism of BM, I mean the British government.
