Taking a Look Back

I wanted to compare how this year's players performance compare to that of the legendary Jimmer. So I took my same formula and applied it to Jimmer's senior season:

Jimmer.PNG

I have to say that I'm only somewhat surprised that Jimmer's average PER only came in at 23.56. For reference, our top 3 this season are:

Kyle Collinsworth 21.75

Tyler Haws 19.21

Matt Carlino 18.78

While Jimmer had some amazing games he also had some woeful peformances. Not due to lack of scoring, but lots of missed shots and TOs. Either he was a ballhog or no one else really stepped up. I am not trying to diminish Jimmer's legacy at all. I just wanted to see how our current players stacked up against him and let the stats speak. Stats don't tell the whole story, but they do tell part of it. Circumstances like a depleted roster with injuries and suspensions have to be taken into account. I also remember Jimmer being hacked on his way to the basket every single time in MWC play and even though the stats show that he got a lot of FTA I bet he could have had double.

His senior year, Jimmer got NO calls. He went to the line fewer times per FGA by a considerable margin. Even his rate per 2ptFGA was way down

Jimmer got mauled, about the same a THaws towards the end of the year last year. That was bad. I remember some ref explained it once as "Well, we can't call everything against Jimmer because then the other team wouldn't have any more guys left to play with and it would completely interrupt the game, besides."

:bug:

Also, this team is much better than that team. If Jimmer had this supporting cast his senior year, it would have been something for the record books.

And here is Davies' senior season:

Davies.PNG

I don't understand how people hate on Davies and say he sucked especially as a senior. He had a really great stretch of 6 games in the middle of the season and finished pretty consistent minus the Baylor game. Interesting that on a PER/Min basis, he is right there with the Jimmer. If he could have just stayed out of foul trouble and stayed on the court he would have been in the Jimmer range. Compared to Mika, Mika's at 13.75 right now so no contest. I will say that I am impressed with how consistent Mika has been. For a Fr that's amazing. He's definitely light years ahead of where Davies was as a Fr, but not to where Davies was as a Sr as some had claimed he would be.

I really enjoyed watching Davies progress from Fr to Sr. From the first time I saw him play I saw huge potential. Perhaps he didn't quite fulfill all of that potential at BYU, but he was a good player.

As a JR, Jimmer went to the FT line once every 1.96 shots & every 1.26 non-three point shot.

As a SR, JImmer went to the FT line once every 2.71 shots & every 1.60 non-three point shot.

If SR Jimmer had gone to the FT as often as a JR, he'd have shot more than 100 more FTs which would have been 89 more points (he shot 89.4%). His scoring average would have been 31.3 instead of 28.9.

No, this team is not better. There is more spread out scoring is all. The reason is this team does not have a Jackson Emery to make the zone work, which is why we shouldn't be playing it against good teams.

Also, Jimmer's team would've stepped on the throats of Iowa State and Wichita State and won by 15+. This team choked away those games in the exact same way both times--they can't get stops and take bad shots when they have a chance to extend a lead. 2 things Jimmer's team was amazing at.

Things may change but there's no way you can make that argument right now.

They are a better overall team. They might not have the same results because JImmer was so good, but an off night for JImmer would equal an automatic loss. Haws has had an off season so far, ( I know he is scoring at a huge clip, but his shot is off and he hasn't been healthy).

If Jimmer struggled the way Haws has this year, we would have been in big trouble. As it is, the team has found other people to keep us in the game. The bench is MUCH more deep, and the offensive halfcourt set looks a lot better.

Tyler Haws Stat Summary:

Season GP MPG PPG FG% 3FG% FT% APG RPG BPG SPG

2013-14 7 33.9 23.6 43.9 40.0 86.4 1.6 5.4 0.0 1.1

2012-13 36 34.3 21.7 48.3 38.1 87.7 2.0 4.6 0.1 1.2

2009-10 35 26.4 11.3 49.6 36.8 91.7 1.5 4.2 0.1 0.7

Career 78 30.7 17.2 48.1 37.8 88.6 1.7 4.5 0.1 1.0

Not sure why some think Tyler is having an "off" season compared to last year 7 games into the season. Yes the shooting percentage is down 4.4% and the FT % is down 1.3%. PPG up 1.9 and 3pt % up 1.9%, and RPG up .8. Wish my "struggles" were like this ;) Go Cougars!

Haws is awesome, don't get me wrong. He just isnt having the same impact on the game early on as he did last year. It is probably because of injury. The cool part is that the team is there to pick up the slack so that Haws can take the time he needs to recover.

Haws is one dimensional. That's why you can shut him down as good teams do. He's gotten his points at the FT in the tough games, which is great, but not enough to make him awesome imo. You couldn't stop Jimmer.

No one suffers more from Davies departure than Haws.

With Davies, teams had to double the post and keep a very close eye on it, freeing up Haws. Mika just doesn't attract that level of attention...yet.

Haws, as much as he would prefer otherwise, is a spot shooter. Run him off a curl, screen, or free him up and he's deadly. All he needs is an inch, but if that inch isn't already there he can't do much.

I know he wants to improve his shot creation and show he's a dual threat, but the best thing he can do for the team and himself this season is recognize his limitations. Once the ball is in his hands he's practically dead-set on shooting it. He needs to pass it out if the inch isn't there.

Instead, they know he's going to shoot. So, teams first try to keep the ball out of Haws' hands. If he gets the ball, help defense comes because they know they can exploit him.
