Holiday Challenge To All Truthseekers

I watched the Nevada game again on DVR in light of all of the bashing. If any of you have no way to watch it I am sure BYU fans around the world would share. Near Ventura County - I have it.



Here are some suggestions for a framework to watch this game or any other game. First and Foremost, remember that it is a team sport with offensr, defense, and Special Teams orchestrated to an overall game plan by The Head Coach. We have a head coach that believes in ball control and assignment sound football executed cleanly.



The offense has several responsibilities. Score points. Preferably TDs. Failing that field goals. But you can't score every drive - so leave your defense with great field position when they take the field. No short fields for opponents. Move the chains. No turnovers. No penalties.



The defense has several responsibilities. Score points. Prevent opponent points. Give the offense great field position when they take the field. No long fields. Short fields. Getting stops, 3 and outs, and turnovers are a significant part of this. Penalties kill it.



Field Goal and EP kicking and defending, punting teams, punt return teams, kickoff teams, and kickoff return teams are all about giving our offense and our defense great field position and to score points.



Due to injuries - recruiting - mission timing, etc., we often have a weak starter or backup on the field or depth or inexperience issues. Other players need to step up and coaches need to make adjustments to compensate. Playcalling happens on offensr, defense, and special teams.

I realize that most CC Posters understand all of the above. It just seems that some lose sight of it and look for a singular scapegoat to convince themself that we are just 1 thing away from being elite.

I heard a ton of Anae playcalling bashing. Anae has imperfections aplenty, but there was way more than that going wrong in that game.



Considering that the offense put up 28 points with no turnovers and never leaving the defense in bad field position in the 2nd half - perhaps most would agree that they did their job in that half. Given that the defense and special teams gave up 2 touch down and a field goal in the 2nd half and frequently left the offense in poor field position, perhaps we could agree that they did not do as good of a job in the 2nd half.



Overall, the special teams and defense combined to give up a turnover and get one back. The offense did not turn it over.



All parts of the team had to many penalties that killed our drives at times and extended Nevada drives. The offense did a better job of recovering well enough to not put the defense in bad field position the entire game. The defense did not. Their sloppy play led to 3 long TD drives by Nevada.



Now back to Q1.



The defense took the field first and set the tone for the game with sloppy play and penalties while Nevada marched right down the field and into the endzone. Poor showing.



Kickoff Return team did nothing to create good starting field position. 30 yard line. BYU Offense starts right off with a false start. That is not playcalling. 1st and 15 and down 7 points already, Hill throws a quick pass out to Falslev. High and hard. Bad throw. Kinda need to throw due to penalty on 1st. That is not on playcalling. 2nd and 15. Hill throws low, hard, and wide to an open Hoffman. Incomplete. Bad throw. 3rd and 15. Hill has to throw again. Nobody open. Scrambles OOB at 30. We did not score on that drive. Execution. Not playcalling. Punt. Almost blocked - but - Decent field position for the defense at 25 yard line.



Defense stops Nevada 3 and out. Punt. Hoffman fumbles it. Nevada Ball. Short field. Defense holds. Field Goal attempt by Nevada. Blocked. Dodged a bullet. Blocked ball returned to 40. But sideline penalty. Pushed back.



Big BYU gain. Big sack. BYU goes for it on 4th. Hill scrambles. Comes up short.



The rest of the 1st half continued this way. Playcalling was not and never is perfect, but there were much bigger issues in this half. Penalties, sloppy play, defwnsive mistakes, and special teams mistakes.



Compare and contrast 2nd half. Maybe GFGH started to take its toll. BYU offense takes the field. Picks up about 10 on 1st down passing play. On the 2nd play - Williams misdirection 60 yards TD. Set offensive tone for 2nd half. No penalties or bad throws.



When the defense takes the field - penalties and mistajes and sloppy play. Highlites would be jumping over the punt screen. Penalty. Extend Nevada drive. TD. Or KVN Unnecessary Roughness on QB, negates Unga interception. Extends Nevada drive. TD.



Plenty to go around and the offense did much more to put the defense in a position to succeed than vice versa.



Go watch it. See who keeps getting handed poor field position over and over.

Then see if rewatching it with a field position perspective.

The challenge was to try and actually make it through all the blah blah. I failed the challenge.
