On the hail mary pass at the end of the first half, who was the BYU receiver deep in the endzone who was the intended target? Seems like it was Ridley, but I can't remember. I'm tempted not to count it on the RER for this week, since the ball was basically just thrown up for grabs.

Ridley. It seemed very odd that there was only one WR in the area.and a short one at that.

Was it Ridley? There were so many ND dudes surrounding him I couldn't even see his number....BTW, did Apo make it into the game?

I saw him on a few plays, iirc.

5'10" Ridley. Just one receiver with 3 dbacks covering him. We have 4 receivers over 6 feet with regular playing time: 6'6" Mathews, 6'4" Houk, 6'4" Hoffman, 6'3" Apo. We decide to run our shortest receiver and only one.

Was Anae counting on the defense to be caught unaware that we were going to go deep with only ONE guy instead of the usual 3 or 4, and that would give us the advantage throwing into the endzone with no timeouts?

I just really don't get the guy. Not one bit. I would love to have a sit down with him at lunch and try to find out what makes his brain work. If the other 99.9% of college football runs their plays a certain way, we might want to try to do the same thing, once in a while.

I do not recall if we had timeouts to get the right personnel on the field. I do not kniw if a receiver ran the wrong route. As usual Blue is Better throws in a little absurdity listing a potential receiver who is actually out for the season.

But this:

A lot of teams would have taken a knee and gone to the locker room. It was surprising that they even got that closr in the time they had. They could have sent all the receicers listed including the injured ones and that would have not had a prayer...

Ok. Hail Mary. Prayer. McMahon. Miracle Bowl.

They certainly could have made a better effort if they had a timeout left or had the right personnel on the field.

Brings us back to point 1. Did they?

Point 2. Could they have if they planned far enough ahead?

BYU got the ball back at their own 24 with 0:27 left with two timeouts.

1st & 10: 4 yard pass to Williams

Time out 0:20

2nd & 6: 8 yard pass to Hoffman, gets out of bounds

1st & 10: 3 yard run by Hill

Timeout 0:09

2nd & 7: 16 yard run by Hill, gets out of bounds

1st & 10: from ND 45, Hill throws to the endzone, where it's intercepted.

It looks to me, that this might actually be some decent play calling and time management by BYU. Which is acutally somewhat surprising.

But with 2 timeouts and somewhat deep in their own territory and under 30 seconds to go, BYU moved the ball 31 yards and gave them a chance to at least get the ball into the endzone.

I have no problem with how that half ended.

All true, Spiff. Couple great plays by THill and Hoff. But the point is, if you are going to get your team into position to make a Hail Mary don't give it up by over thinking the play.

If the Mary pass has 3-5% chance normally, why cut that back to less than one percent with only one, short, WR????? It's insanely restarted! It's the same crap with our Red Light zone offense--it doesn't matter squat if they drive the length, get in position and then drop a deuce!

Bib, do you advise Anae?
S
SpiffCoug
Yeah. I was surprised that BYU tried to move the ball late in the half. Then I was surprised that we only ran one WR into the end zone on the hail mary. Seems like you'd want three guys:

One guy on the back line to catch a tip

One in the fray to try to make a play

One guy in front to maybe catch a deflection back.
C
Cougarbib
No, Cougs Rule. I do not advise Anae.

My point is that none of you know what he was trying tocdo or what was called and whether every player went where they were supposed to go.

One of my questions was answered by Spiff. No timeouts left to change any personnel. So WHO was on the field? Can't send players that are out for the season. Not even players on the sidelines.

Who was on the field? If Hoffman was still on the field, what did he run on that play? Did anyone fall down? Miscommunication?

I would guess - we can only guess - that Anae did not start that drive intending to throw a hail Mary. I would guess that he hoped for a diffetent miracle and it wiuld have tsken a miracle in any event. I would guess that with odds so low, he did not want to risk an intetception that might get run back.

I would guess that he called runs hoping that they did not expect it and that he could bust a 40 yard gain and then a conservative pass or two and get into FG range.

That fell apart, and with fear of clock running out and mass cobfusion, he hucked something up.

Could it be that Ridley was the only guy that got down there in time? I saw other white jerseys running to the end zone but the one in the end zone was the only one who got there. The reason ND had a bunch of guys down there is because they all lined up down there and didn't have to run from the line of scrimmage. That is what a prevent defense does when the offense is behind the clock. That is why they call it a hail mary, because it is a prayer and usually doesn't get answered. Blue, if you come here with logical criticism I can take it but your constant harping on everything Anae did on Saturday no matter what it was is getting old.

Our best WR wasn't withing 20 yards of the endzone!! And the only other was in the boofoos as well. It was a poorly conceived play.

Missed assignment

Miscommunication

Held up at the LOS

Tripped or stumbled

Protection broke down before he could get there

Poorly designed play

Could have been any number of reasons

IDK the reason. You most likely do not know it either.

Where is Clay Brown when you need him?

As Willy Wonka once said: "You lose! Good day, sir!" ;)

I watched the play over, and we had 2 running backs in for max protect, Hill didn't have much pressure as they were running three. So there were only 3 eligible receivers on the play. One was basically hanging out next to the line of scrimmage all play, and one was seen running across the field toward the end zone as the ball went by. Ridley and the other defenders were hanging out in the endzone, they had clearly arrived there prior to the ball being thrown. it is therefore very probable that anyone designed to be in the endzone was.

So they had 3 recievers in the pattern and 1 got to the end zone with the ball, all of the ND defenders were there because they lined up down there. So how am I wrong?

Well, the original point was that only one receiver (our smallest) was sent to the endzone, and that appears to hold.

Nobody. Not even the almighty Blue knows how many were sent. Not even Carmac knows.

Might have been. Might not. Only one got there. That sucks.

No, 2 were sent to the end zone, 1 stayed short, that is not sending your smallest, the smallest happened to get there. Oh, and by the way, why did they leave 7 guys to block 3? Because the offensive line still can't block well enough to try to have 5 block 3.
