BYU Getting to the Next Level

We have now seen BYU underperform against 3 similar style play teams this year: Utah, Wisconsin and Notre Dame.



The evidence of certain weaknesses appear to be:



1. Lots of missed tackles against physical, hard running and fast running backs

2. Poor penetration, pressure by DL against big, nasty attitude OL

3. Inability of DL/LBs to stop power run game (they do well against finesse, option teams)

4. Poor OL play against run-stop oriented teams

5. Struggles to score in the red zone (inside the 20)

6. Poor pass coverage on big plays

7. Inability to adjust to other teams O/D play calling schemes



The defense has stated that they failed to execute the plan that Bronco installed. Why does that happen against these type of teams?



Regarding the O woes, coach Anae said, “We have to get better coaching in the red zone and we have to get better playing in the red zone. You are usually successful down there when you can run the ball and you push that in short-yardage situations. We did not do that tonight.” So what is he doing to as an alternate plan to running the ball. The backup QB for OSU faked a jump pass and ran into the end zone which caught Baylor by surprise. Why couldn't we be just as creative?



Just hope that these issues get corrected by next year because they are keeping the team from progressing to the next level.

The team will be similar next year but with a forgiving schedule will look slightly better.

Offensive scheme and recruiting are the two biggest areas of improvement not mentioned above.

New offensive coach. It won't happen until then. Possibly a new head coach, too, since ours doesn't have clock management skills, doesn't use his practice times wisely, and MOST IMPORTANTLY (to me) has no idea how to hire (and delegate) to personnel.

Given game time experience from this season with the following players, where do you see strengths? I didn't include the 31 RMs returning this year nor the incoming FR.



Offense:

QB: Hill, Olsen, Stewart, Green

RB: Williams, Lasike, Brown, Hine, Moore, Pritchard

WR: Apo, Kurtz, Mathews

Hback: Thornton,

TE: Mahina, Thompson, Houk

OL: Fabaluje, Wesley, Kearsley, Mathews, Yeck, Wilcox, Stringham, Duran, Crichton, Aletto, Kafu, Fusi, Carter



Defense:

DL: Marques Johnson, Kanuch, Kafusi, King, Lauille, Peck, Peoples, M. Taliauli

LB: Fua, Gautavai, Ho Ching , Leuta-Douyere, Owens, Pikula, Pili

DB: Trammel, Johnson, Lee,

Safety: Bills, Daniel, Wadsworth, Badger, Leavitt, Nacua, Riley



On O, I believe we will be strong at QB, RB, OL, and weak at TE, Hback, possibly WR (depth)

On D, I believe that we are moderate to weak on D-line (depth) and LB (depth), strong with DBs and Safeties.



Hopefully Anae's system kicks in with OL and decision making. Bronco will have his work cut out for him.



Schedule looks more favorable compared to this years SOS.

Pili has mission plans I'm told

Dont plan on BYU getting to the next level. If BYU gets there, it won't actually be getting there, it will be a one year trip there. A one year convergence of decent schedule and a few superstars mixed with something BYU hasn't had for a long time--and Oline and an OC who can lead them to the one year promised land.

BYU can't recruit enough elite players to get there. And that's why BYU wouldn't compete consistently in a big conference.

I Love BYU football. I like Bronco. I'm really not confident in Anae.

But next level? Sadly, probably not.

I think BYU makes great strides next year in



QB decision making (which takes decisions away from Anae) Great QBs can make receivers better too... can Hill take that next step?



Oline performance, experience, and depth = T Fab strengthens the entire Oline... it will be quite the competition for PT next year... show up or don't play



Dline experience and performance



Secondary will be much better. Daniel is as good as Sorenson at FS, Bills will be better, and Trammel and Johnson are much better corners



receivers? should be better. I like Kurtz and Matthews along with Houk, Thompson, Mahina improving... Apo... what to do with Apo? And maybe just maybe we can help Hine, Lasike, and Williams learn to catch and run on a screen? (less worried about the running and more worried about the catching)



Linebackers?????? Stout? Fua gaining weight? Pikula is the only guy I really trust at his position.

With the addition of these players, the depth on DL, LB looks very promising and WR/TE improved with Weeks (similar to Hoffman but with speed) and Jorgenson (another tall TE much like Mahina). I also remember TE Bryan Sampson (6-3/225) - he caught the winning 2-point conversion in the blue-white 2011 game (pass from RN) before leaving on his mission.



We should have a better record - assuming no major injuries.

We will miss Unga as much as Hadley and KVN --3 guys who very well could play on Sundays. I was wrong about Pikula, he's serviceable. Our Dtakes one step back.

2012-- 9

2013--7.5

2014--6.5. LBs, too many losses.

We have Kurtz coming in next year, no? After that my biggest question is are we going to have a legit TE next season? It could very well be argued that BYU's best seasons have always come when we've had above average to great tight ends.

Last time when we had a barn full of NFL talent with Bronco and Anae at the helm we went to the Las Vegas bowl.



Would be fine with the same coaching combo if they learned from their mistakes, instead we have the same poor clock management, the same bone headed play calling in the red zone, the same slow secondary, and same inability to beat good teams on the road.



Until we either get new coaches or our coaches decide to learn a thing or two, BYU goes to the Kraft Hunger bowl every year and occasionally flirts with a top 25 ranking.

You have to remember that that barn full of nfl talent was on offense and we had a defense that sent no one to the nfl. If we had Bronco's current defense with those offenses, we would have gone BCS bowling back then. BYU is currently building the talent pool for both the offense and defense. Lets give them a year or two to accomplish what they seem to be working on. We all have to remember that when TCU went to the BCS, they were loaded on both sides of the ball. The utes were also loaded on both sides of the ball with NFL talent. BYU has never had NFL talent on the defense since the 2004 debacle and Bronco is just starting to get his defense filled with NFL talent. What Bronco has done with the talent he has had is impressive.

Really? When has BYU had as many prospects, even if they are as a group, mid-level?

KVN--will be drafted by 3 round

Hadley--drafted or picked up (if he can heal)

Unga--same as Hadley

Kaufusi--will likely be drafted (hopefully to a D that will utilize his talents and not a 2-5-4.)

Daniel S--as good as any safety we've had in a long while

Manu--almost as good as Fuga.



D Doesn't get much better than the last two years as far as players, except for CBs--but we still had a surprisingly good RDaniel who played well.

With the return of Bingham DL RMs, we reload along the DL. LB corps in next couple years will be very, very good: Hinds, Warner, Cook, Pili, et. al. Don't see a drop off in D talent.
