I'm not taking a poll or anything, because most people that are disappointed with the season aren't on the board anymore. I just wanted to start an honest discussion about the season looking back, and what we expect going forward. Those on the board still are the most hopeful, and/or the most masochistic, (I think most of us fall somewhere in between ;) ) that I wanted to get a sampling.

With one more (probable) win to go, BYU is sitting at 7-4.

How do you feel about where BYU is sitting at 7-4?

Would a win against Nevada change your position or solidify it? (Obviously a loss at Nevada would send the program reeling, and would potentially result in some changes, especially followed by a loss in the bowl game).

So how do you feel about a 9-4 season when all is said and done?

How would you feel about an 8-5 season with a loss to either Nevada or Washington?

I will post too, but first I want to get some responses, and provide a little context of who we have played and how they are shaking out this season. Wins in Blue and losses in that other color.

Virginia (ACC, 0-7 dead last) Overall Record 2-9 . Notable wins: BYU. (Their other win is a Div 1AA school). Losses to Oregon, Pittsburgh, Ball St, Maryland, Duke, Georgia Tech, Clemson, N. Carolina, and Miami. Plays VT next. WILL NOT BE BOWL ELIGIBLE.

Texas (Big 12 record 6-1 tied for 2nd with Baylor) Overall Record 7-3 . Notable wins: Kansas St, Iowa St, Oklahoma, TCU, W. Virginia. Losses to BYU, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma State. Still plays Texas Tech and Baylor. CURRENTLY BOWL ELIGIBLE and possible BCS implications depending on winning out, and other programs losing.

Utah (Pac 12 1-7 tied for both second to last in conference and last in division) Overall record 4-7. Notable wins: Utah St, BYU, Stanford. Losses to Oregon St, UCLA, Arizona, USC, Arizona St, Oregon, Washington State. Plays Colorado next. WILL NOT BE BOWL ELIGIBLE.

Middle Tennessee (C-USA, 5-2 3rd in C-USA). Overall record 7-4. Notable Wins. None. Losses to N. Carolina, BYU, E. Carolina and Northern Texas. Plays UTEP next. CURRENTLY BOWL ELIGIBLE.

Utah State (MWC, 6-1 2nd in conference, 1st in division) Overall record 7-4. Notable wins: Air Force, SJSU, UNM, Hawaii, UNLV, and CSU. Losses to Utah, BYU, Boise St, and USC. Plays Wyoming next. CURRENTLY BOWL ELIGIBLE

Georgia Tech (ACC, 5-3 2nd in their division 4th overall) Overall record 7-4. Notable Wins: Pttsburgh. Losses to VaTech, Miami, Clemson, BYU. Plays Georgia next. CURRENTLY BOWL ELIGIBLE.

Houston (AAC, 4-3 division 5th overall) Overall Record 7-4. Notable Wins: None. Losses to BYU, UCF, Louisville, Cincinnati. Plays SMU next. CURRENTLY BOWL ELIGIBLE.

Boise St (MWC, 5-2 4th overall, 2nd in division) Overall Record. 7-4 Notable Wins: Air Force, Utah St, Nevada. Losses to Washington, Fresno St, BYU, and SDSU. Plays New Mexico next. CURRENTLY BOWL ELIGIBLE.

Wisconsin (Big 10, 6-1 2nd in conference). Overall record. 9-2*. (*should be 10-1) Notable Wins: *(should have been Arizona St, I'm counting it here), Northwestern, Illinois, Iowa, BYU, Indiana, Minnesota. Losses to Ohio St, Pac-12 refs* (ASU). Plays Penn State next. CURRENTLY BOWL ELIGIBLE, and possible BCS implications depending on tOSU losses, or "we're sorry you got shafted" accomodations (though not likely).

Idaho State (Big Sky, 1-7) Overall Record. 3-9. Notable Wins: None. Losses to Washington, UC Davis, North Dakota, N. Arizona, S. Utah, E. Washington, Portland St., Weber St. Not playoff eligible (FCS team).

Notre Dame (8-3, Independent) Overall Record 8-3. Notable Wins: Purdue, Michigan St, Arizona St, USC, BYU. Losses to Pittsburgh, Oklahoma and Michigan. Plays Stanford next. CURRENTLY BOWL ELIGIBLE, but out of BCS speculation, even with a win.

After what happened to our only corners before the season started, I'm okay with how the season has gone. It could have been worse.

Losing to Utah is never excusable, however we were competitive in every game we've played but Wisconsin. 8-5 considering we lost our corners preseason is acceptable to me... 9-4 would be tremendous.

Losing to Nevada is unacceptable... as was losing to Virginia (though the hurricane like weather was more of a factor than Virginia the team, just inexcusable that we lost)... I would fully be in the fire Anae boat if we lost to Nevada in the same manner in which we lost to Virginia, Utah, and ND... I just dont' think we'll lose

Not sure we've ever played a schedule with so many bowl eligible teams and I'm not sure we've beaten so many bowl eligible teams.

Beat Nevada and be competitive in the bowl game (hopefully win) and I think this is a good springboard into next season.

Taysom has shown us flashes that he could be a Heisman kind of guy and we bring back an experienced offense. Jamaal is still a baby and maybe this summer is the year he puts on another 10 lbs and becomes impossible to tackle. Our oline will be better

UVA was inexcusable.

Nevada would be inexcusable.

Utah was good when they played BYU. But still unforgivable

Wisc understandable

ND sort of understandable and acceptable.

Washington in bowl-- not a gimme

Prediction: beat NV, lose to Wash. 8-5. Pretty good season. One more loss away from a disappointing season.

In the 2013 season we faced one of the more challenging schedules in BYU history. I believe at the start of the season, most all of us believed that WI, ND, BSU and TX were likely losses, We went 2-2 against these teams. We saw glimpses of an outstanding team in victories over good teams GT and Houston. The USU victory was also impressive because despite loss of Keaton, we still scored over 30 on a very good D and a bowl eligible team that is one of the top teams in the MWC (this includes 16th ranked FSU).

The bitter losses were to VA (2-9) and then our 4th straight to UT (especially a difficult pill to swallow given their current 4-7 record). We absolutely should have won those games.

I am frustrated with the losses to WI and ND because the team that I saw in other wins didn't show up, looked overmatched, and couldn't capitalize in the red zone. We do that and we had a shot to beat those two teams - tantalizing proposition.

I just hope that Anae and team has learned something from those games because the KFHB game will be a challenge against WA. They just demolished a reasonably good OSU team with top end speed on O and a relentless D that shut down one of the best pure passers in Shawn Mannion and great WR in Cook.

Therefore, I will be happy with 9-4 record (assuming we beat WA in bowl game). This has been accomplished with a make-shift OL, loss of two major cogs in the LB group (Hadley and Jorgenson) and several key DBs (Trammel, Johnson, Lee, Hague).

A win over WA would propel the team going into 2014 knowing that they had performed beyond expectations with a big time SOS. Should provide the team with a lot of confidence in games against similar opponents.

Good post Blue. For me, starting disappointed first, extremely bummed we list to VA, really wanted to best UT, thought we could beat ND and expected to lose to WI, although glad we hung with them. Extremely pleased we beat BSU convincingly and amazed at the beat down we put on TX. Pleased with good solid wins of USU and GT. The two bad loses neutralize the two great wins and the two solid wins are neutralized by the expected loss and thought we'd win but didn't games. That leaves our wins over ISU and TN and UNR to put me moderately plus side. A win in the bowl would be nice of cours, but that is just focusing on the team's record. For me breaking in a new offense, a new QB, and new coaching staff and playing the most challenging schedule we've ever played, I'm quite pleased.

I've enjoyed this season. The record is better than where I thought it would be. I thought there was a chance we could lose 7 games (Texas, Utah, Utah St, Houston, Boise, Wisconsin, Notre Dame). So to go 4-3 in those games feels like a win for me.

I've seen a lot of signs that point to good things in the future. For instance, we're averageing 254 yards and 4.8 yards per carry against BCS teams. The previous eigth years it was 102 and 3.1. So the fact that we now seem to be able to run on BCS teams is a good sign.

Throw out the outlier in Tx and throw in the fact that we have a running qb and I'm not as Optimistic about the running numbers. Plus, contrast that to our passing numbers being down from historical averages and its just a nice trend, not necessarily an elevated, game changer.

Good potential. But a long way to go with the Oline, TE, and depth at WR next year. Not to mention that our D has to reload next year and seems very thin at out historically best position, LB. Then there is Anae. Not feeling it for that guy after what I saw at ND. It was like watching Doman run four WR quick screens vs press coverage.

And I think our injury riddled BYU team comes out flat in the bowl game and gives one away. Hadley gonzo. KVN and Hoff will be focused on draft prep and not injuring themselves; D isnt and just won't be the same. My life for a DB who can look back for the ball and make a play. I just don't get that.

Sorry if I'm not all blue-goggled. Still love our Cougs, but have to wait and see how the new kids look and that may not come to a clear perspective till next fall. Wish I could be excited thru the off season.

On a brighter note, the Hoops team is looking good and will likely make a run at the Big dance!

I was actually impressed with MD. He was thrown into the mix at DB when it became apparent that Povey, Leavitt couldn't keep up with ND WRs. Other than the ISU game he hadn't seen any significant playing time. Yes, he didn't always follow the ball, but he was in position and not trailing the WR by yards. ND didn't score another long TD pass after their two scores, and the rest of the game wasn't high scoring. Once RD got into the game and began feeling better, the BYU D actually settled down and limited ND to FGs in the second half.

BYU rarely comes out flat in bowl games under BM. Look at our bowl record under him (i.e. we have won four in a row):

2012 SAN DIEGO COUNTY CREDIT UNION POINSETTIA BOWL

San Diego State Aztecs (Mountain West Conference)

W 23-6

2011 BELL HELICOPTER ARMED FORCES BOWL

Tulsa Golden Hurricane (Conference USA)

W 24-21

2010 NEW MEXICO BOWL

UTEP Miners (Conference USA)

W 52-24

2009 MAACO BOWL LAS VEGAS

Oregon State Beavers (Pac-10)

W 44-20

2008 LAS VEGAS BOWL

Arizona Wildcats (Pac-10)

L 21-31

Throw out Texas and we're still averaging 201.5 yards and 4.3. Which is more than TWICE the previous average and a 40% increase in yards per carry.

Everyone is talking about the losses on defense being huge. How about the losses at receiver? Isn't it interesting that Robert Anae's conservative play calling has gotten everyone irritated right about the time that we lost half our receiving corps to injury? Put Mitch Matthews out there along with Hoffman and it opens up the field much better since they can't put 2 guys on Hoffman all day long. We are also down a tight end and Friel is still injured even though he played. I am not nearly as upset with Anae's play calling as I am the effort I saw out there. I still think the team looked unmotivated and disinterested which is unacceptable to me especially on national TV. Bronco said as much in his post game interviews with KSL and said it would be corrected in practice this week.

I wonder if there will be any productive change to wake the offense up? What can be changed, this late in the season? I doubt they are going to work the TE into the offense.

Yeah, at this point I'm not sure there is much that can be done.

But I'll enjoy watching BYU run all over Nevada and then we'll take our chances in the bowl game. 9-4 will be a pretty dang good season.

Plenty went right this year to be optimistic for the future.

They were already working the TE into the offense (BSU anyone) when we lost them all to injury.

Exactly which of our highly touted and hyped severly underperforming tight ends would you want to bet the Nevada game on? Pick one that is not out for the season or playing injured like brother Nelson tried to do last year at QB. We do not have a good tight end.

I would like to see us find one for next year. We sure missed by letting the Utes get Jake Murphy rught out of our family tree. We bet the farm on 5 tight ends, Jake Heaps, Zac Stout, a bunch of guys from 2010 that transferred, plus Apo, Pritchard, etc., and that highly touted best class ever was largely a bust. And yes, I probablt listed a guy or 2 from other classes in there.

Maybe it would be interesting if Craig, Mars, or one of our recruiting gurus ran an analysis on how that class turned out. It has been long enough to judge it. Remember - KVN is actually 2009 - then sat out a year. Sure glad he did.

We have paid dearly.

I predicted 8-4 regular season. Tough to predict the Bowl Game until we see who we get. If it is UW, I predict 9-5. There is no way we beat UW. That would be like beating Oregon and OSU in the past bowl games............wait. I guess we have a chance ve anybody.

I was worried about the UVA game. East Coast. Jet Lag. Virgin twice removed starting QB. New Coaching Staff. New System to go with the Virgin QB and a Virgin coach or two. OL hangover from recent years. Timing. First Game. I was worried about that game and I hadn't even thought that we might get a 2 hour delay. Had not anticipated the myriad DB issues or Hadley suspension (I know - that was later) or Hoff injury and suspension. Assumed no key injuries. Luckily Hill has held up to the pounding as has KVN. Hoffman mostly has. Hadley - missed more than half of the season.

I worried about Texas and Utah - timing again. I even felt MTSU could be dangerous early. Expected 2-2 start. I expected things to start to gel by then and that we would lose 2 more road games - most likely the two we lost.

I knew that there was at least as good a chance of doing worse as there was of doing better.

After the Utah game and our passing game so out of synch three games into it, I wondered if Utah might be bowl eligible and BYU not.

Then things started to Gel on offense.

Right on track. Pleasantly surprised given injuries and suspensions.

A loss to Nevada would be a huge disappointment although I looked at it as a trap game. There is a 25% chance that they pull some rabbit out of their hat.

If we lose to Nevada. I will not expect there to be 1 convenient scape goat. Blue would like to shoot Anae for making us lose to Notre Dame - Blind to how the game started. Hine. Shall, I go. Yes. No. What do you think. Ok , I will go. Cost us 5 yards. Got moving. Hoffman drops a pass. Hoffman. Cost us 10-15 yards. Kept going Anyway. False Start. 5 yards. Bad Play Calling. Really? So add 25-30 yards to where we ended up and likely with a 1st and 10 - Anae would have gotten points on that drive. Play calling. Really.

Then, ND starts with Anae having created field position favorable to us.

The DEFENSE let ND waltz right down the field almost unimpeded. Anae. Bad play calling.

Offense has to punt on 2nd drive. I do not remember what all went wrong. Whatever it was. Blame Anae for bad play calling.

BYU Defense lets ND Waltz right down for another TD eventually. All of this before the DC gets his personnel figured out. Anae - bad play calling.

Throw in Hill tossing a pick and JS missing a chip shot field goal and

Anae bad play calling.

So assume a field goal on the 1st drive stalled by Hine, Hoffman, and a false start and another 3 on the missed Chip shot. BYU 16. And assume minus 7 for ND getting a free pass to the endzone. ND 16. Tied game. Then assume a field goal instead of the 2nd free pass ND got to the endzone.

BYU 16. ND 12.

There are a lot of reasons BYU lost to ND on the road in horrible weather.

Bad plat calling.

Fire Anae.

He pissed in my overly optimistic coffee and pre-season dreams.

;)

I just barely noticed this in BlueIsBetter's signature. So true.

I believe that quote was meant as a compliment, as in, Robert Anae is hard to gameplan against as a defensive coordinator. Unpredictable. That's a good thing.

Prove it. Post it. Post the article. Your opinion is not good enough.

Good not great season. The ND loss was the backbreaker for me. We didn't really prove anything this season except that our O is capable of putting up more points against average teams. Wake me when we get a decent Oline and legit TE. Until this happens BYU won't get to the next level.

Losing Matthews was a big loss vs. ND, and I am impressed with how well the D has played despite playing 2 4th string or worse corners.
