BYU Fireside in South Bend

I was lucky enough to be able to attend the BYU Fireside tonight with 2 of my boys. My summary: it was awesome. Taysom Hill and Bronco spoke - both gave great spiritual and uplifting talks. Bronco is a surprisingly good speaker and has a very engaging personality (I think that every time I hear him speak w/out any microphones or tv cameras in his face). Taysom is surprisingly well spoken. A. Brown also played guitar and sang a solo, and several players sang a Tongan hymn. My boys got tons of autographs and a few pictures with players.



Non-BYU highlight of the evening: The real Rudy was in attendance - got a picture of him with my boys. That was awesome.



If you ever have a chance to go to a BYU football fireside - do it! I think my boys got more out of that 1 hour than they have through all of church the last 12 months combined.

Sounds great. How was the crowd?



To be clear Rudy came to the fireside? If so that is awesome and kuddos to who ever got him there.

Packed house - clear to the back of the gym. And yes, Rudy was at the fireside. Sat pretty close to us.

I have always wanted to attend one of the firesides. I'm taking my family to the opening game at UConn next year. Got to get to the fireside!



On kind of a related note, 2 weeks ago our stake in VA had a youth fireside and Bryan Kehl and Tevita Stevens, both with the Redskins spoke. It was amazing. And even though Tevita was a Ute, he gave a very powerful talk. Of course Bryan's was better. And the Ute/Cougar banter was very entertaining. Again, Bryan put Tevita in his place.



Back to the OP; I am happy for, and envious of you, that you are there to enjoy the fireside and the game.

Fantastic! I assume it was an LDS alum who brought him! Very good guy, he is always great to the kids. His nephew was in my graduating class.

It was Awesome! Me, my wife and another couple were there as we'll. It was our first fireside also. I felt like a little kid getting pictures and autographs from Rudy, TH and Bronco. I told Jamaal that it felt like 225 and 3 TD's for him and he told me "that sounds good to me!" It was great to see the team stand and sing "We'll Bring the World His Truth" with Lasike playing the piano.



I ran into the guy that brought Rudy out. He said they chartered a flight out of LV to get him here, and that it is the 20th reunion of the filming of Rudy. The guy must have some dough, because my budget is charged $1600 an hour when I book my company's jet.

Quick question to expose my ignorance, but who is Ruddy? I've seen that name mentioned in a couple of threads, but now my interest is piqued.

Rudy is a 1993 American sports film directed by David Anspaugh. It is an account of the life of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. It was the first movie that the Notre Dame administration allowed to be shot on campus since Knute Rockne, All American in 1940.

In 2005, Rudy was named one of the best 25 sports movies of the previous 25 years in two polls by ESPN (#24 by a panel of sports experts, and #4 by espn.com users).[1] It was ranked the 54th-most inspiring film of all time in the "AFI 100 Years" series.[2]

The film was released on October 13, 1993, by TriStar Pictures. It stars Sean Astin as the title character, along with Ned Beatty, Jason Miller and Charles S. Dutton. The script was written by Angelo Pizzo, who created Hoosiers (1986), which was also directed by Anspaugh. The film was shot in Illinois and Indiana.

Further explanation. Rudy became a walk on. Buried too deep to ever play. Basically homeless much of the time. Worked harder and showed more grit than Riley Nelson while serving as practice fodder. Undersized.



And then.......



Go see the movie. Well rent the movie at this point or buy it or borrow it. It is a great movie about a guy who would not could not and should not be denied his dream.
