What Bronco hopes to see in future schedules (wow!)

...Speaking on his weekly show yesterday on KSL News Radio with Greg Wrubell and Marc Lyons, Mendenhall spoke about his future scheduling desires and hinted at a possible match-up with the LSU Tigers (audio).



“I would still like to have a military academy each year. I’d love for our players to visit West Point (Army), I’d love for them to visit Annapolis (Navy), I’d love for them to experience that part of college football.



“I’d love to have a long-term agreement with Boston College. I think that would be a great game for us. And then there’s many others that will be announced later that I think the fans will really like. But there are some that make a lot of sense, and I would love to have games in each part of the country that have really natural and intriguing, kind of, similarities between programs.”



Greg Wrubell then asked Mendenhall “Maybe some Big Ten announcements in the future?”



“That would be my hope. I like that. Just after our game against Wisconsin and looking out, what Ohio State looks like, Northwestern, teams like that, that could be really fun.



“Nebraska is on the schedule in the future, Michigan is on the schedule in the future, LSU possibly on the schedule in the future. So yeah, we’re gonna travel as many places as we can to play the best teams we can.”...

LSU makes sense. They are one of the few SEC teams that actually travel west with recent trips to ASU, AZ, and UW. That would be a brutal matchup for us.



I think playing the academies is a pipedream. Navy is going to the AAC soon and Air Force being in the MWC makes nonconference matchups with those schools very unlikely.

If you get Army/Navy/Air Force in a rotation though they only have to make room on their schedule once every 3 years. I don't think it is unthinkable.



I also can't help but think a LSU game and Boston College long-term deal are in the works--otherwise why would he say it the way he did? Ohio State and Northwestern are not yet on the schedule either. The rumors that came out about Wisconsin in a similar way ended up being true--maybe these are too.

Why Boston College I wonder? Catholic school, maybe the location? Either way I would love to have BC back on the schedule. If we could have 1 catholic school per year that'd be good in my book. Seems like the mormon and catholic relationship/respect has grown a lot in recent years. ND and BC are the only two D1 catholic schools with football I know of.



In basketball we could fill 25 games with catholic schools!

Well we have like 18 plus tournament games already on.

I think BC is more about the location. In the northeast, there really are only 4 major programs out there: BC, Rutgers, UCONN and Syracuse. For such a densely populated area, the top tier CFB schools are limited. So BC gets BYU in the northeast, and BYU has a solid base of fans in Boston/NYC that could easily make that trip. Plus, we have UCONN on schedule already.

I remember when Bronco dropped Wisconsin and Nebraska in Q/A sessions, and they happened. Willing to bet that LSU is in the works as well, just not finalized yet.



Would love to get Army, Navy, Northwestern an BC on schedule as well. I'd love to see those teams in LES.

I can't see Bronco as the type to "blow smoke". I think there has been talks just "unofficial talks" Maybe Bronco wasn't supposed to say anything yet?

Having all of these road games depresses me.



Bronco said something about travelling all around the country to play with not a word about getting teams here on an equal basis. Scares me.



As we upgrade our schedule and play big 5 teams nearly every week with less than 40% in Provo, we are either going to need Idaho State and Weber State and teams like that to keep coming here 1 and done in November to meet the NCAA minimum for home games - or be content with a heavy dose of MWC, AAC, and CUSA coming straight up. I guess that is where the military academies come into play.

The USU 2 for 1 and the FCS games helped us balance the games mentioned above. We need this top games to establish ourselves as independent. I think it has worked. We will see us giving less 2 for 1s in the future.

I agree. Schedules are worked out so far in advance (many teams are scheduling 2020 and beyond games now) that starting out as an independent is very tough. I think we've seen BYU get past the initial "where are we going to get 6 home games and 6 road games from" mode during the first three years.



Now they are sprinkling in some of the high-end games you want to get on your schedule and balancing the rest with some big name teams and other winable games. Unfortunately to get in front of them you often have to fill spots when they open up on big-name schedules and hope to work out a relationship in the process.



The ideal schedule is to have a low end team or two who is on your schedule to make sure you get bowl eligible, a couple high-profile games that set you apart if you are good enough, and then a handful of competitive games in the middle that you win as a good team but lose if you aren't up to snuff--all balanced between your home and away games. I don't think BYU is in this phase yet. But I hope they are on their way to that.

So basically, we're going to have to get really good at beating BCS schools on the road real fast; otherwise, it's the Kraft Hunger Bowl year in and year out.
