urronerI was able to catch a little bit of Coach Bronco's post game interview yesterday between putting up paneling in my family room. I'm trying to not use any trimming for the corners and that means a tight fit and that can get to be a pain and having the air compressor kick in every five minutes, it's an old air compressor and leaks, makes it impossible to hear the interview. I did catch this bit of the interview and turned off the air compressor to hear what Bronco said.
This is all from memory and if there is a link to it somewhere, I'd appreciate it if one of you could provide it.
He was talking about how he was able to let the third and four string get in and play. He said there were players, who finally got to play in a game, was just sitting around the locker room and just letting the emotions just sink in. One player was even sitting all by himself when Bronco left and Bronco said that the kid might even end up sleeping there overnight because he didn't want to let go of those emotions.
I was a custodian for the Cannon Center cafeteria, we called it the "Smarf and Barf," and the football team would eat supper there. I remember talking with some of those players, including Clay Brown, yes, the Clay Brown who made that catch in the Miracle Bowl.
I asked some of them why they practiced so hard and made so many sacrifices for a game and a team when they would probably never play more than a couple of plays, if even that, a season. I've been there and it was more of a "let's hear what you have to say" type of question.
One player pretty well summed it up when he said "Because it's BYU and I don't want to leave this chance on the floor when I die." That pretty well summed it all up.
I'm grateful for Coach Bronco, and any coach, for giving ordinary Joes, Joes like me, the chance to shine a short time in front of their friends, family, and themselves.
