Just Back From Stanford

Just got home from watching Stanford. Here are my thoughts:



1) For a school as rich in history and financial means as Stanford their arena sure seemed small. Santa Clara may have a bigger house.

2) For a school as wealthy as Stanford you'd think they'd come up with a better mascot than a tree, also their mascot is an evergreen tree but it's Coastal Live Oak country.

3) Powell (No. 33) on Stanford was crazy good. Don't know why Stanford didn't keep pounding it inside to him and don't know what he was doing hanging out at the arc. We didn't have much of an answer for him.

4) Pac12 refs stink, but I think we saw the effects of the new hand checking rules.

5) KC is good. Needs to work on not forcing things though and ditch those inside the key passes. He plays a bit out of control.

6) Carlino is a stud. Guy had improved his handles and his shot. Super fun to watch him.

7) Our scrubs took Stanford to the wood shed.

8 ) Haws is automatic.

9) Our free throw shooting is horrible! Will cost us games this season.

10) Mika is a stud, but he looks lost out there on defense. Kind of like watching Jimmer attempt to play defense in the NBA.

11) We forgot how to box out.

12) Maybe it was the B team, but Stanford's dancers looked uncoordinated, did their best stripper impersonations and as my two year old son said where, "Half naked."

For the most part the refs were pretty consistent...The bigs really give us a nice inside outside game..If we keep up this effort and intensity could be a real fun year...Coach Rose needs to end practice with an exit fee of free throws...

Stanford does not have a supportive fan base. When they renovated their football stadium they took away seats, not added. The Pac 12 Championship in football vs UCLA had 31k fans at Stanford (link below). I am not surprised to hear they have a small stadium, that being said I love the campus.

Not to mention the bush league 3 point line fix. Looked like they took a pencil eraser to the old one and hadn't yet sanded the whole floor and refinished it. How long has there been a deeper 3? Like 5 years?

Their strength is their academics. Somehow that helps their football recruiting more than it helps basketball. It is a business, I suppose. Football is where the money is.

Stanford was a powerhouse in the 90s and early 2000s, and completely irrelevant before then. They seem to have taken a nosedive right about the time Mike Montgomery bailed on them for the NBA. They really haven't gotten it straightened out since them. Dawkins was Coach Ks 1st assistant for 2 decades and had been talked about for years for many job openings, but he hasn't gotten them back to their place of prominence. Though he did win the NIT in 2012.



My brothers good friend and our family friend Nick Robinson (now the head coach of SUU) stayed on with Montgomery and Johnson then followed Johnson to LSU and eventually took his own head coaching job in Cedar City.



Trent Johnson took over for Mongomery and did a decent job getting Montgomery's recruits (Lopez brothers, etc.) to the dance but was a terrible recruiter himself and Dawkins inherited an empty cupboard by the time he took over. It remains to be seen what Dawkins can do once he has a full arsenal of players, but I would take Randle, Heustis or Powell in a heartbeat. Powell will have a long NBA career because he can do so many things with his size and height, but he was also an 8 point a game player as a freshman so he's had to come a ways to get there.

The same empty BYU riddled Maples arena (well not actually the same, they did renovations) used to be a house of pain. Word around here locally is that unless Dawkins gets Stanford into the NCAA tourney this year, he's done.

More often than not, programs rise or fall based on coaching changes.



Utah - Urban Meyer and Rick Majerus and Jack Gardener - otherwise mostly obscurity



Meyer leaves - Utah tails off and Florida rises - Meyer leaves and Florida falls off and Ohio State has not lost a game. Players base decisions heavily on coaches.
