Assessment of WI Game and Season

Taking emotion out of the loss, there are some things that UT and WI did that challenged our team. GA stated in post game show that he had consulted with KW about game plan.



1. Take away Hill's opportunity for QB run and make him throw over the top. Hill still hasn't shown the ability to find second and third options when primary read is covered. He missed many open RBs out of the backfield and Matthews - Ridley were open when Hoffman was double teamed.

2. Our WRs have trouble getting open against physical grab and hold DBs and have trouble making catch in tight coverage. I believe that Calhoun was a better WR technician coach and taught them the nuances of creating space-separation and latching onto the ball. Apo dropped several catchable balls as did others. Momentum killers.

3. OL is overmatched against physical opponents - has trouble against stout run D and strong pass rush.

4. Loss of Hadley killed our D schemes he is a very vital cog in our D. Game virtually lost with his departure - torn MCL.

5. Loss of Mahina and Mathews was critical as we

have little depth and experience especially without injured Falslev in slot.

One of The best breakdowns I've heard. Good job. ALOT of weapons hurt.

I think our D came out a little rusty/slow from bye. But they were awake and firing on second D series. Then, down went Hadley. Like taking a bookend away.

Not sure about Cahoon vs this Guy. Apo has had all these problems and DROPS and lack pf phyiscality since beginning. The Oline is spotty anyway and we knew needs more recruits and training. Oh and JW had a horrible block on a blitzer--horrible! Don't know if he was peeling off for a screen or dump off, but bad.



On the whole, I am really not surprized by this loss. Our young, newly installed O was rolling but not impervious to a set back--especially vs a very tough defense, consistent team that made very few mistakes and played a very tough home venue. BYU will reset and regroup and hpefully warm up on ISU and be ready for ND--BECAUSE IM GOING AND WANT A W!! :-)

Lets not forget those 3 and outs r killer to the def, even more so with those big boys Wisconsin had upfront...The wind really hurt us to I feel no FG attempt because of it..Nice ball that hill threw in the second that got killed by the wind...Yes both team must deal with it but I think that wind benefitted Wisconsin much more..

The more I review the game the more I realize that Anae has trouble adjusting to D plans that he hadn't anticipated. Case in point is that Taysom stated that the D was ready for the fly sweep and the DBs were playing man coverage on WRs. That meant our 6-3 to 6-6 WRs were against 5-9 DBs. Seems that given the short time Hill had to throw, that swing passes, slants and down and outs might be more productive than winging downfield into the wind. WI used short play action high percentage passes that were as productive as runs and moved methodically downfield. I don't see why TH couldn't do the same.

5 bad drops by my count. 3 to Apo. 1 to a TE and 1 to MM. 2 of those would've put us inside the 10 yard line. I don't care that UW's line beat us up all game--that was never a surprise to me. But you have to make special plays to beat great teams in their house and those drops were those special play chances. If we complete those the game is completely different.

Good breakdown. We were flat and did not appear to up for the game. I am disappointed to not see the emotion/passion coming from the team, I think that comes from up top to the coach.



I can't say with a straight face that we deserved or had a chance to win, we were outplayed. It could have been worse if WI did not simply run out the clock the last few drives.

Some thoughts from Camp Randall:

1. Disappointed in Hill's development. On at least 5 plays where Hill was pressured or sacked, he had between 3-5 seconds before the pressure got to him. He simply held the ball too long. He has not yet learned to throw to a spot rather than wait to see a receiver come open.

2. On a 3rd and short when the run got stuffed, Wisconsin obviously knew what was coming, as both safeties moved up together before the snap to the spot where Williams ran. Hill should have seen that and audibled to a quick slant on the opposite side, or ran that way himself.

3. Clock management continues to be the coaching staff's Achilles Heel. Wisconsin fans were baffled by us running the ball twice and burning almost 40 seconds in the last two minutes. Embarrassing.

4. Playing to keep score respectable, not playing to win. Punting when down 3 scores with less than 4 minutes to play from midfield is the choice of a coach who has conceded the loss and is trying to avoid a blowout to prevent dropping too far in ranking. For shame.

Agreed. Apo had had two solid tough performances and then at WI reverts back with the drops. They were in traffic, to be sure, but we were back to more of the same old same old. You just have to make those plays.

All I can say is WI's OL was a sight to behold. They pushed us around like a bunch of rag dolls.

Our D turned in a good effort compared to WI opponents to date. They were held to 50 less yards then they average. Their RBs averaged less yards/carry than seasonal average, they were 7-19 on third downs, they scored less than their average pts/game and had 2 turnovers. Our O didn't show up and allow D a chance to rest given the number of 3 and outs or short possession drives. If TH, WRs and OL show up like TX, UH, BSU, we are in the game and have a chance to win. Daniel Sorenson said it best, "too many little mistakes and failure to execute. bYJ picked a bad day to only play mediocre.

Hill's development has been very good this year. He's much better than he was early in the year. He'll continue getting better.
