BYU in the BCS?

Dave Miller from National Football Posts thinks the Cougars could be an attractive candidate for the Fiesta Bowl.

One game at a time, but man that would be awesome!

It won't happen. NIU has a cake walk schedule, Fresno will be heavy favorites in their remaining games. If that isn't a long enough shot for you, Byu has to beat two top 25 teams in the road. IF THATS not a long enough shot.... there is more.



Lets just focus on winning our games and hoping for a good bowl team.(please no AZ!)

Not happening. Even if BYU wins out there are too many good BCS conference teams that are a big draw to fans. BYU lost to UVA and Utah, too many bumps along the way. Sad to think what good have been if BYU only took care of business early on.

it would be good to just be in the discussion. Just win Cougars.

My dream scenario for the final rankings of the BCS this year.



1. Alabama

2. Oregon

3. Fl State

4. Ohio

5. LSU

6. TAMU

7. S. Carolina

8. Missouri

9. Houston

10. Texas

11. Fresno

12. N. Illinois

13. BYU

14. Auburn



The selection order would be Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta.

Why not? Two.Per.Conference.



That is how BYU gets in. Even if Fresno OR N. Illinois are in the top 12, only four things that need to happen, besides BYU finishing in the top-14, of course:



1) Stanford gets ousted from the top-14 after losing to Oregon and Notre Dame. They would be ineligible;



2) Clemson loses to South Carolina (and Georgia Tech for good measure!) and finishes at #15 or worse;



3) Miami loses to Virginia Tech and Florida St. in the ACC championship and finishes at #15 or worse;



4) Baylor wins out - this knocks all other Big 12 contenders out of the top-14.



Because of the 2-per conference rule, there would be only 10 eligible teams for the 10 BCS spots. BYU to the Fiesta Bowl, baby!



Let's win on Saturday!

We aren't even ranked in the top 25 and we haven't even beaten Wisconsin, arguably our "biggest" game in decade, and we're getting all giddy over the possibility of crashing the BCS party?

We are talking about the possibility. We need to send missionaries from the Reformed Church of the Undefeated to your home.



Also this is in reference to what do we have to play for. The same thing that Wisconsin is playing for.

BYU in BCS? probably not.

There are 13 teams between #27 BYU and the #14 BCS ranking - this is the all-important eligibility threshold.



Last week's results - BYU moved up ONE spot (from #28 to #27)

#26 Virginia Tech lost to NR Boston College. VA Tech is now #40. We now need VA Tech to beat #11 Miami!

#21 Michigan lost to Michigan St. Wolverines are now ranked #31.

Georgia JUMPED BYU for beating now-#43 Florida. Lame. Florida's biggest win is Toledo....Toledo; think about it. Or may be Tennessee (4-5). Georgia is now #26.



What needs to happen:

#26 Georgia - lose at #9 Auburn next week or #42 Georgia Tech in the finale. One loss is all we need.



#25 Texas Tech - has fallen quickly after losses at Oklahoma and to Oklahoma St. Finishes the season at #6 Baylor and #28 Texas. One loss is all we need.



BYU beats #23 Notre Dame and #24 Wisconsin. That knocks out 2 more. Four down, nine to go.



#22 Arizona St. loses one game - #19 UCLA, #36 Oregon St., Washington St., Utah, and Arizona. Take your pick. I would still choose for ASU to beat UCLA but then lose to #36 OSU (who lost to #38 USC and will lose to Oregon), and then one more loss...to Utah would actually help us the most, but I would want to see Mike Leach beat the Sun Devils.



#21 UCF loses to #30 Houston this week! Houston would be a threat to jump BYU. But that really wouldn't matter THAT much, because the American champ gets an auto bid. And Houston would either win the American, or lose one more and fall back behind BYU.



#20 Louisville loses to #30 Houston. This actually isn't that essential, because the American champ gets an auto bid.



#19 UCLA loses to #22 ASU or #38 USC. And then is destroyed in the PAC 12 championship game.



#18 N. Illinois. They actually dropped a spot after a win over 1-8 UMass. N. Illinois could lose to Ball St. (8-1) or at Toledo (6-3). Buffalo (6-2) could knock off the Huskies in the MAC championship game. Only one loss is needed.



#17 Michigan St. A loss to #32 Minnesota (really?) or #33 Nebraska. Would be good. Regardless, a loss to Ohio St. in the Big Ten championship might just be enough.



#16 Fresno St. could easily lose at Wyoming (4-4, pray for snow) this week or at SJSU (5-3). I also think they will lose to Boise St. in the MWC championship game.



#15 Texas A&M. They finish the season at #13 LSU and at #8 Missouri. Could lose both.



The final #14 spot - one of the following happens:



#14 Oklahoma St. - I called my shot on the Cowboys beating then-#15 Texas Tech (who dropped 10 places). We still want to see the Cowboys lose to #28 Texas and #6 Baylor. I think we may want a victory over #10 Oklahoma.

#12 South Carolina loses to #7 Clemson in late November.

#13 LSU loses to #1 Alabama and #15 Texas A&M

#9 Auburn loses to #1 Alabama and #26 Georgia

#10 Oklahoma loses at #6 Baylor and #14 Oklahoma St.

#8 Missouri loses to #29 Ole Miss and #15 Texas A&M

#7 Clemson loses to #42 Georgia Tech and #12 SC



"Jump" risks. #28 Texas, #29 Ole Miss, #30 Houston, and #31 Michigan, #32 Minnesota, and #33 Nebraska are still risks to jump BYU in the BCS standings, should any of these teams win out. The good news is that Michigan and Nebraska still play (so one of them will be eliminated) and Minnesota still plays Penn St., Wisconsin, and Michigan St. (ie, not. gonna. happen.) The success of one of these jump risks would actually cause teams ahead of BYU to fall in the rankings, so it wouldn't be all that devastating. In fact, in most scenarios, BYU is actually helped by Houston's and Texas' success.



#14 BYU (assumes we win and the above list works out) is GUARANTEED a BCS bowl if either:



1) Neither Fresno St. nor N. Illinois is in the top-16 of the rankings and either the Big 12's, ACC's, or PAC 12's second place team is #15 or worse. (ND could do us a big favor by beating the Cardinal at the end of November)



2) Two out of the the Big 12's, ACC's, and PAC 12's second place team are #15 or worse. (see above)



2-per-conference rule could help BYU big time this year because of all the SEC teams still in the top 15.

This last post is an excellent run down of the path to the bcs. It's still a long shot, but we will be close. I'm feeling optimistic against Wisconsin this weekend. Once we bust the top 25, the buzz will really begin. The script will be we lost one anomalous game in terrible weather, and then a close one to our rival. The rest of the table, if we win out, is a reasonable argument for us making it. We've beat some pretty good teams here, Cougs, just take care of business from here on out and we have a good chance. Those that are giving a hard no, I think might be surprised, the top 25 will be volatile in the weeks to come, especially with November rivalry games. I'm guessing some upsets will roll and will help boost our rank. GOT to handle the badgers this weekend though. GFGH all 4 quarters and get a convincing win

The reason I like this scenario is because of conference affiliations the bowls will be:



BCS Championship - Alabama vs Oregon

Rose - Ohio vs at-large (2nd pick)

Sugar - At large (1st pick) vs at-large (4th pick)

Orange - Florida St vs at-large (3rd pick)

Fiesta - Texas vs at-large (5th pick)



First the Sugar bowl takes whatever SEC team it wants, then the Rose picks from BYU, NIU, Fresno and Houston/UCF/Louisville (I think it will be UCF), then Orange, Sugar and Fiesta. I think given those choices the Rose bowl picks . . . BYU. That's right if you're going to dream dream big. BYU to the Rose Bowl.



The key though is for there to be exactly 10 teams eligible out of the top 14 and for BYU to be one of those teams. If they win out they'll definitely be top 14 (already 21 in the computers), but they need the top of the SEC to keep winning everything and for teams like Oklahoma, OK State, Michigan State, and Stanford to lose.

Ha ha! BYU to the Rose Bowl isn't going to happen, but it is funny that as of today BYU has a better shot at the Rose Bowl than does Utah... Also it would be funny because we went tot he Fiesta Bowl a good three decades before Utah, we'd go the the Rose Bowl about the same three decades before they got a sniff at that thing as well.

The hardest part is BYU winning out.



I'm not convinced Fresno and NIU will go undefeated.
